Hey folks!

I'm doing a bit of research and I would LOVE if you could share your story with me. Are you or someone you know a type 1 or type 2 diabetic? Are they out of a job and thus out of corporate health insurance? Please let me know as you could be featured in an upcoming DiabetesMine blog post. Thanks!

I've had type 2 diabetes since 1999. I use pills (Glipizide) diet and exercise (mostly bike riding and walking) to control it. I lost my full time job in March 2009 and I am currently working retail part-time. My Cobra health insurance subsidy ran out last August and I couldn't afford to pay the full price so I've switched to Get Med 360 insurance until open enrollment with my current employer this May. I'm hoping to find fulltime employment but with the current economic situation it's going to be difficult; the San Joaquin Valley here in CA has been especially hard hit by the recession.

I think by making simple decisions to buy or not buy, consumers have changed entire industries — banking, travel, cell phones. A little pressure from consumers typically produces a lot of innovation that shifts products, competition, prices, quality, choices, and ultimately value. The problem with personal and corporate health insurance is that it has been built around providers, insurers, the government, employers — and not around consumers. We've ended up with spiralling costs and few consumer choices, primarily because many of the regulations and mindsets governing health care have inhibited the kind of broad-scale consumer innovation that's happened in other industries.

even those of us with a job, but do not make a lot of money, are still suffering. unfortunately, many of us put our bills an family before our medicines. Low paying job or no job at all.
