Thank you. This has helped me also. Doctor just told me to watch carbs and lose weight. I have been just estimating what I should have. Guess I am doing OK, since BG down and within range (most times) and weight going down!

Hi, I am one of the low carb extremist in the group. I follow Dr. Bernstein's 6-12-12 program with great success. Took off 77 lbs and have kept it off for two years now. Also managed to get off all meds. My 30 day preprandial and postprandial average BG is 100. It is an extreme lifestyle, but I have a disease that requires a theraputic diet. I will do whatever is necessary to conquer this disease.

Losing weight will come with good control and added exercise. But as a rule a diabetes instructor will tell you 45-60 gms of carbs per meal and 15-30 for snacks. 3 meals a day and 3 snacks a day. If you are trying to lose weight I'd stick to the low end of that range and add exercise.

Worked for me!!

For Laura and I we follow a 125-150g of carbs per DAY meal plan. Each meal may vary a bit as long as our totals are between these 2 numbers. We try our best to keep it at about 30-40 for each meal and allow the leftover allowance for snacks, which we try to keep at about 15g per snack.
If your talking total carbs and not carb grams this comes out to around 8-10 total carbs per day.
I suggest you ask your doctor to send you to a dietitian or a nutritionist or diabetic educator that deals with carbs for a training session or 2 that will teach you how to count carbs and also suggest how many carbs/carb grams you should have each day. Once you figure out how to count them it comes pretty easy and soon you'll memorize what some foods carb grams are.
We count in carb grams because it is easier, if you need to count total carbs just remember that each 15g of carbs = 1 total carb.

It all depends on what type of diet you are using, I prefer a low carb diet and I personally try for 30-45-60. Which is 30 g of carbs in the am, 45 for lunch, and 60 for dinner. I try to viualize carbs as slices of bread. Since a slice of bread is 15 g. So 2 slices of bread in the morning, 3 for lunch and 4 for dinner. I subsitude other carbs for slices as needed. Others might use a lower carb diet than I, or a higher, it all depends on what style of diet. Good luck.

I hope you get some good answers because I still can't figure out the carb thing either. I eat what I think I should and hope for the best! :) Good luck, Angie
