Advice and tips are welcome

Hello Everyone,
I am glad I found a place for support and understanding.
I just found out I am diabetic last Friday.
The nurse practitioner,spent my appointment making me afraid. However she forgot to provided me the medication I so needed and didn't teach me how to use it.
I have fixed this problem and am now on my way to hopefully bringing my levels and fasting sugar down.
I am having a hard time eating food as I am now afraid. How do I live a full life and maintain my new illness.
I am having some reactions to my insulin,I am retaining water in my legs. How do I fix that? I am between sad and angry. Sometimes just plain fear,what do I do to adjust smoothly.
I have some knowledge but, not much.
I hope you guys could provide some insight.

-1st things first know you're not alone…a common emotion that comes with being a newly wed (name for newly diagnosed diabetics)

-2nd thing: eating will be challenging but accomplishable…think of things you like to eat and just down size. the key word in diabetes especially type 1 diabetics is MODERATION!!! LOL where you would have (I don't know) a ice cream sundae on a hot day try settling for a ice cream cone with nut toppings

3rd- with the insulin talk to your endocrinologist some insulin's take time to adjust to the body and vice versa. mainly because the insulin we inject is not the exact same insulin our pancreases made. when it comes to jelly legs (water in the legs) if your body is holding insulin its good to relax, drink some fluids, and elevate your legs. sometimes this can be a perk to being a diabetic especially if you're at work

4th-some diabetics don't know this but our emotions do a contribution to our blood sugar so try your best to control them find a good hobby/outlet

Hi Gabby,
Thank-you for the info. I noticed that I was starting to feel chipper and so I checked my sugar it was 281. It was 402 this morning. The difference is how I felt/feel is shocking.
I like the idea of trying to keep my meals within a certain amount of set points. I was going to try to deal with it and then bring it up at my doctors app. Next week. I have more blood work coming up. My thyroid was a bit off which could cause the water retention. I googled it :p

Thyroid disease is often seen in people with diabetes. I was diagnosed diabetic in 1976 and in the mid-1980's, they discovered I was hypothyroid. I've been on thyroid meds ever since. My endo just adjusted my thyroid med dosage and I'm finding it's easier now to get better BG readings.

Smoothly might be the operative word. It is a huge adjustment and fear is usually a part of most people when faced with big changes. Unknown things are fearful, but as you take them on one at a time, you will find the fear subsides a good bit. Take a bow for fixing things as you did. Being proactive is your strongest asset.

At this stage, your meter is your best friend. Use it often. Let it show you what food, exercise, sleep, stress and illness do to your levels. Test before a meal then 2 hours after to see if you rise more than 40 points in a meal. That is your first battle. You don't have to do every meal, but once you find one that works for you, use that one as a bench mark for number of carbs and portion sizes.

As for the insulin causing swelling, I would call the doctor or pharmacist. I know being on insulin often helps us gain weight because our body starts to use the glucose in our bodies and store it as fat. But leg swelling is something I would talk to a doctor about because that is not a normal reaction.

They are not sure if I am type one or two .
I have to go back for more testing.
They have me on lantus . Every two nights I double my insulin. Tonight I am on 26 tomorrow is 28. And as of today I am on 2000 mil. Of metformin. My a1c was 11.5
It's hard adjusting to the needles and watching carbs/sugars . I am starting to retain water in my legs :( we are now low/sugar free at home. I will go get an endocrinologist. I will start writing it down that's a fantastic idea.

Like kimfing said below, I think the key to control is to become truly Carbohydrate Aware…not just sugar but paying attention to all carbs. Be careful of the low-fat foods since they frequently have more carbs than the regular versions of the same foods. Figure out how many carbs per day you were eating and cut back on those. Each diabetic has different requirements. I've found that for me, I can maintain my 120 lbs weight and an A1c in the 6's with 120 grams of total carb per day. Take it one step at a time. Learn as much as you can about diabetes and you can partner with your health team to get your BG's under control. Diabetes is one of the more manageable chronic diseases with a large component of self-management in the way of diet and exercise. With the right choices, you can live a normal and rewarding life.

That's a great start. Be proud if yourself? Mine was 11.7. I went ultra low carb first few weeks until my next appt when i found out i was actually t1 not 2.

I cut out all white flour, white rice. My body cannot do enriched flour. It has to be 100% whole wheat orwhole grain. But everyone is different

Welcome! First of all, take a deep breath. I am sorry u had the fear put into you. Yes d is scary but manageable. I know u have a lot running thru your mind right now.

Step back and say, yes i can do tihs. Yes, it may not happen overnight.

I would read as much as my mind can handle. Get an appt with educator/nutritionist and an endocronologist.

U didn't say if u were t1 or 2??? What meds are u on? Check with Dr about possible reaction.

Test your blood sugar before eating, read all food labels and weigh n measure everything and keep a log book of all of it so u know how what u eat effects your blood sugar. Test two hours after eating. Take all this info with u to your apps so they know how to help you.

I contacted my local American diabetes association last year when i was first dx, they sent me out a lot of great info.u can also get a lot of good info on this site. The recipes are pretty good, but watch out, some aren't.
