Howdy Y'all
My son Jon and DIL Rose took me out to Ruby Tuesdays this evening. It was a great meal and I was a pretty good boy ordering a half rack of ribs and green beans and broccoli.

What Rose suggested next was to get some Gelato. I have had Gelato before when "Jem" was with me, but nothing prepared me for this: Since I had never been there the counter man gave us a taste of most ot the concoctions in the display. I had several small tasting spoons full of Gelato. Deciding to not push my envelope too far I settled on the smallest bowl available of the plain Rasperry, which was excellent. (Wish I had selected a bigger bowl. LoL!)

It was a wonderful treat for a 105f evening in Las Vegas.

Here are Google query results from "Art of Flavor". ~

If you are ever in Las Vegas, NV, you might want to do your taste buds a flavor and try this wonderful Gelato shop.

I Read that the actual fruit is better than the juice but admit that the juice tastes so good. I don't eat much fruit at all because I love grapes the most. I must try gelato tho.

jayabee52 2014-07-24 02:50:04 -0500 Report

the fruit is WAY better than the juice as far as carbs are concerned, due to the fiber in the fruit which moderates the carbs in the juice.

I am, I take metformin 1000 2x a day and 2 pen injections, still seems high - hard to change my diet so much, I only use sweet & low and pepsi-max hasno sugar. Big bread and pasta eater though.

Howdy Matrix
Sorry to say but the bread and pasta would need to be discontinued to affect your high BG readings. That is what it took for me!

Another favorite of mine from Ruby Tuesdays is the Ruby Relaxer, however not at all diabetes friendly and quite alcoholic.

You're right, Just Joyce, I did use my having to fast from midnight on, as an excuse to eat badly and I know better than to eat pie. Today our daughter brought pizza for lunch since we had her boys so I tested before having any and my BG was 104. That's really good during the day so I had 1 piece. For dinner, 1 had a homemade hamburger made with very slim round muffin bread and regular toppings. Oh, and a few Fritos and before that a string cheese. The pizza is unusual for me. I keep string cheese on hand tho. My biggest vice is my nightly popcorn.

Never been there, but I love Italian Gelato; some more than others. I guess it is a good thing there isn't one nearby me as I sure do have a weakness for good Gelato. Between the ribs and gelato you really have me drooling. Glad you enjoyed yourself.

I have never had any gelato, but I agree with the art of flavor. I use spices more than salt. I am studying up on which spices are best with which foods, and how they effect us.

Hi James, I love gelato! Even though we are experiencing a "cold front" in North Texas, (it's only 90 degrees right now) I'd love a small bowl of gelato… Glad you had a nice meal with the kids.

I had a cookout last night and I ate 2 cheeseburgers rather small, and a piece of grilled zucchini, and a shizkbob. Got up this morning and my B/S was 206.

Gelato is another reminder that Italian cuisine does so many things "right." Such a luscious mouth=feel. Somehow, I never feel the need to gorge on gelato, unlike the usual American-style ice cream.

ps- the last time I was at Ruby Tuesday, I had a terrific berry sangria! Now, if I could only get out the grease stain from that burger…

Couldn't have done any of that walking without passing out and heat!? Yuk. The Gelato sounds wonderful, Jay, but RebDee, chicken and waffles doesn't, even tho I like them individually. Anybody know of low carb waffles? :) I don't eat Mac and cheese anymore either and I LOVE it, my homemade way. All that walking should've helped with the BS. 413…wow! Hope it's down now. I had a 270 reading at night with just having peach pie. My problem is not much exercise.

Kashi has whole grain waffles and bluberry waffles that are high in fiber, but I like them with real maple syrup so don't follow my health plan.

If you ate peach pie. The sugar from the crust, peaches and added to the mixture is what did it. I would never eat that without testing first to see if I could have it.

Grandmama16 2014-07-15 22:22:47 -0500 Report

You're probably right but I rarely test before eating anything unless it's at night to decide if I should have popcorn. I knew the peach pie was not a good idea tho. It was a bad day food wise for me since I had to fast from midnight on for a Test with a camera down my throat. Dr said it looked fine but no results on biopsy yet.

Just Joyce
Just Joyce 2014-07-15 22:42:38 -0500 Report

What on earth is a bad food day? I had a doctors appointment this morning. Doctor called yesterday and said he wanted a fasting blood test. I came home and had an egg, bacon, one piece of toast and coffee for breakfast. Lunch was cream cheese on ritz and water. Dinner was a broiled pork chop, broccoli and a very small red skinned potato.

When it comes to sweets, the wise thing to do is test before eating. If you are higher than normal and then eat the sweets you are asking for trouble.

I think you used the doctors appointment as an excuse for eating badly. The end result was you had a higher blood sugar which isn't good.

I don't always make good food choices but when I want cake or pie, I test first. I also buy fruit pies with no sugar added. I can't tell the difference. I will thaw a small slice of pie and add a scoop of no sugar added vanilla ice cream.

If my blood sugar is at 100 I will have the pie if it is over 100 I won't go near it and opt for a cookie. Good luck on your biopsy. I pray everything is okay.

Yesterday, I went to Pasadena with my friends to the Jewelry and Gem Show and walked for more than 2 hours up and down aisles to see all the wonderful gems and jewels. If I had more money, I could have broken the bank on beautiful things. Then we went to Roscoe's Chicken & Waffle for dinner. I had 2 chicken thighs, a waffle, and a small order of yams, and a taste of mac & cheese. I was so stuffed when I was finished I could barely get out of my seat. Then we went to Menchie's Yogurt for dessert. After using the little tasting cups, II decided to eat no more. Problem: This morning, my BS was 413, which is more than three times my usual BS. I was very surprised as I am on an insulin pump which gives me insulin all the time plus a booster at meals and I use to register all food that I eat and was under for the day due to the amount of walking that I had done. What happened?????

Just Joyce 2014-07-15 17:19:42 -0500 Report

I think you should have eaten the chicken and waffles before the jewelry show. I have had that and my blood sugar spiked to 150. That is not something I eat on a regular basis.

Ruby I absolutely love the Gem and Jewelry Show. I went earlier this month and got some beautiful semi-precious gemstones. I made a convertible necklace with some agate. Got some tiger-eye and some wood to go with some coconut shells I have.

I love Chicken and Walffles. I would have eaten that just before the jewelry show so I could walk it off.

Is gelato the same thing as what is called a concrete? We have some places here that serve fresh concretes but no fresh gelato places.

Ahhhh Las Vegas! love it, miss it! Never had a chance to really check out the food there, other than the buffets at the Sahara, Rio, and a few small shops off strip. Gelato, *sigh* I love the pre packaged stuff, and can only imagine how delish the fresh is! Glad you got to enjoy some along w/ family there Kev. LOL Next time, enjoy a spoon for me! :)

Love fresh gelato! And we have a gourmet Italian specialties store just 3 blocks from us. Close enough that my husband can walk up, buy the bread, or cheese, or olives we want for dinner, and snag a small ( really tiny, about 1/4 cup) fresh Gelato for me. It is wonderful! Sounds like your sharing dinner with family went as well as ours!
We went out with our daughter, and several of her friends, to celebrate her 30th Birthday, to Bahama Breeze last night. I had one Skinny Margarita, and the Grilled Chicken Tropical Fruit Salad, with light citrus vinaigrette ~ and brought half home!
Today our daughter flies back to Nashville, we had her home for 6 wonderful days.

James is there a Tony Roma's still in Vegas? They had the best ribs and the Onion loaf was fantastic. I had them in Vegas, Hawaii and on here in Maryland. The one in Maryland closed.

jayabee52 2014-07-14 12:23:28 -0500 Report

Yes the last I've been by there there were cars in the lot, so I guess they're still open. It is THE place for ribs.

I love Gelato. The Triple Chocolate is to die for. I would not eat in a Ruby Tuesdays if you paid me. The ones here are horrible and the wait staff is just as bad. One of the restaurants here had a Gelato Bar and you could sample it all. I did just that and thought I was in heaven.

GabbyPA 2014-07-14 07:20:27 -0500 Report

I had never had it before a few months ago. I tried a coconut gelato. Oh my. I was shocked and very glad I only got a small serving or I would have eaten the whole container.

I looked for one in my area, we don't eve have one in our state. Must be a Vegas things.

Gelato is an Italian dessert and these days you can buy it in Wal-Mart and I think Target has it. The Italian restaurants here serve it. It has about 24 gms of Carbs. I will not eat carbs with a meal just to have it. I love Gelato. It is a big step up from even the best ice cream you can find.

We have Ruby Tuesdays here but the food is awful and the wait staff is just as bad. They are in just about every major city.

GabbyPA 2014-07-14 08:15:48 -0500 Report

We have a Ruby Tuesday's here, but I don't eat there often. Way out of my way. I bought my Gelato from Publix. I don't recall the brand off hand, but it was sold in a small clear container with a screw on lid. Oh so yummy.

GabbyPA 2014-07-15 07:16:12 -0500 Report

Yeah, they are a southern chain. One of the best in my opinion. I pay higher prices, but would rather shop there where I am treated well by the employees.

PegB 2014-07-14 07:11:00 -0500 Report

I don't think Ruby Tuesday offers gelatos

They don't he went somewhere else to get the Gelato. One of the ones here is in a large college community. They have a Ruby Tuesday's and two doors away there is a store that has a gelato bar. You can find just about anything you want to eat in Vegas.

I laughed when I saw your post because on Monday my husband and I went to The Ale House, a restaurant here in Hollywood, FL that has a $10.99 rib special (Mondays only). They give you this huge rack of ribs that is falling off the plate. I ordered them, but only ate half (I took the other half home), And like you, instead of getting the fries, I substituted green beans, just like you did on your dinner. Then after that, we went to a gelato place in downtown Hollywood where I had a scoop of raspberry gelato. This is all so weird, right? Oh, I forgot to add…it was 92f here in Florida!!!!!

That is what I REALLY like about RT's is that they have diabetes friendly sides, which makes being "good" there very easy.

ADeangkinay 2014-07-14 05:35:25 -0500 Report

that sounds flavorful but gelato is more denser than the ice cream. I'm gonna need to restrain myself from that 90 calories.

IronOre 2014-07-14 01:51:41 -0500 Report

I have always wanted to try Gelato, but never have.
I tried to look at the Roby Tuesday's menu on-line and they do not have it listed. Was this a special item ?
Would you happen to know the carbs/serving ?

jayabee52 2014-07-14 12:30:33 -0500 Report

We had to go to a little place just off "the strip" here in LV. We had to drive about 6 miles to get there from RT's. (in NLV) unfortunately I didn't ask for the carbs/serving. I think that may be one of the "cheat" indlugences that I allow myself from time to time. Perhaps it is better I don't know

Sigried 2014-07-14 01:24:07 -0500 Report

sounds like a nice sweet treat, how does it go with your diabetes? I confess that I had to Google Gelato, never heard of it before

jayabee52 2014-07-14 12:34:24 -0500 Report

I was first introduced to it by my late wife Jem. She was Portugese and had Italian friends (it is Italian in origin)

As far as going with the diabetes, it more than likely doesn't. Just one of those occasional indulgences I allow myself once in a blue moon.
