has anyone done the slimfast diet? If so, could you email me at small.
I am not sure how to work the meal plans.
the plan seems to fit really well with a diabetic diet. Has anyone tried it and had a problem?

Slim Fast has to much sugar for any diabetic. What I use and what I am losing weight on, is Take Shape For Life by Medifast.

This productI is endorsed by over 15,000 doctors all across America. Every person who decides to stop yoyo diets and concentrate on weight loss, needs this product.

They have Plus Products for diabetics.
The shakes I am taking, 4 per day, have only 5 gs of sugar, 90 calories per shake and they are terrific. Serving size per shake is 1 packet ( 27.3 g).
total fat 0.5g, no saturated fat or trans fats, no cholestrol, sodium is 250 mgs, Potassium is 400mgs,total carbs 9 g, dietary fiber 3g, protien 14 g.

I take a shake in cold tap water 8 ozs every 2 to 3 hours with 3 ice cubes in a blender. This is a soy based shake and despite it being diabetic, it's great tasting.

I can also do bars, soups and hot cereal.
It's important to understand that it took each of us many years to get to where we are healthwise and it will take some time, depending on the amount of weight you need to lose.

The first time I did this program, I lost 100 pounds in 6 months. I started out with a POSITIVE attitude and achieved my desired weight and felt wonderful.

Then I remarried and you know that when two people love to cook, you eat. Zoom, more weight again to lose but in just under 14 days, I lost 12.5 pounds and 2 1/2 inches off my waist. Does this work, you bet! The best part is I have a Health Coach who I can call anytime to get help from and that is a plus.

I also eat a large salad with broiled chicken strips at the evening meal. Carbs need to be at a minimum and after a person reaches kitosis, usually in three days, this becomes a very easy program. My new weight goal is 62 pounds and I will do this in 3 months. I hope this helps all who read this message. God Bless. Freddyg aka Fred

Hi Shelia,
To answer your question of cost, it's $2.00 per meal, per day. It's designed around each persons weight loss program as everyone is different. Until you address the exact problem as to why you are overweight, all the programs in the world won't help. This is a serious weight loss program, not a diet per say.

If you would like more detailed info, shoot me an email
at small and I'll send you our phone number. That would be the best way to learn all about this great system. The same goes for others here in the Diabetic Connect website. Take care and God Bless.

I don't know too much myself but have heard of so many other names of diets out there, I would definately listen to them above and look into something else. Whatever way you go I do wish you luck and the best, take care. Sheila

Tried this a while back. Becuase I sometimes have trouble with eating (no appetite) I thought that this would be great. The main problem with the program is the sugar level in the shake. Also the carb to calorie ratio is way off. They make a similar shake for Diabetics called Glucerna that has lower sugar but it is still not a safe diet plan. You don't get enough nutrients from a liquid that you could get from fresh foods. You are better off trying smaller portions of "real" foods. If you are struggling with your weight or having difficulty in deciding what's healthy you should see about contacting a dietician. They can give you a list of foods and portions that can steer you in the right direction. Sorry to say that while the Slim Fast diet sounds great it just doesn't work. I've lost 3 times as much weight by starting the "plate" diet sponsered by the ADA. They even have the sample plates for sale at their website.

Forgot to mention…I started this with a friend who is not diabetic and even she started having troubles with her blood sugars. She had to go off after 3 days. Good luck on finding something that works for you.

actually, I have seen it work! my cousin was on it and lost a lot a lot of wieght. So it does work…for some people. I am more concerned with the diabetic aspect of it.

BeckyJ 2009-03-22 14:34:18 -0500 Report

Didn't mean to imply that it doesnt work at all. My cousin used it for a while and was able to loose about 30lbs. My intent was to let you know that it's not particularly safe for diabetics because of the sugar and nutrients. Even though there is no set "diet" for diabetics our nutritional needs are different. We have to be very careful that our electrolytes and mineral intake remain in range. A slight lowering of sodium or potassium for example can cause serious problems for a diabetic while a non-diabetic may not suffer at all. If you are still willing to try the diet PLEASE make sure you let your doctor know so that they can monitor you. I have fought the weight battle for years and suffered for it. At my highest I was 342 lbs. I am now down to 170. Very close to my BMI now. I don't mean to preach and if it sounded that way I'm sorry. I just wanted to let you know about the drawbacks of this particular quick fix.

Hi there …
I work with my nutritionist because of my diabetes. And this is what I have been told about Slimfast. Its way to high in sugar. But now I have type 2 and my concern is keeping my blood sugar down. I dont know much about type 1. I have a very bad reaction to slim fast because of the sugar in it . A diet low in carbs and low fat protein's Im told is best. A great rule of thumb I learned is the closer to the way the food grows the better it is for you. There are no Slim fast trees. Good health to you and good luck!
