what to eat

Hi everyone, I am new to this site, But after seeing my dad pass away last april with this,and knowing what my chances are of getting it, I have done alot of reading,anyways I have written to Applebees and asked that they have a page dedicated to the diabetics, thay thanked me and said they would def consider it, it's hard to eat right when you go out to eat, unless it's a salad, then u have to be careful with the salad dressing, geesh…anyways i am not using reg sugar anymore and people thats a huge change for me, as i love to bake, I read the back of every thing, i'm what you would call a pre-diabetic,but it runs so deep on both sides of my family, I cant escape it, I just make adjustments as do my kids :) but anyways do any of you know of where to eat at thats got diabetics foods?

I was just in Wal-Mart yesterday and they have a book that tells you calories, fat and carbs in foods, including restaurants, and I remember thumbing through it and it had Applebee's listed and these 3 contents in each of their foods, along with several other restaurants, we personally live out in the middle of nowhere and only get to the city once a month if then, so I did not purchase the book because it doesn't apply to us as much as it may other people that have easier access to restaurants. It is a small book about the size of a 4x6 index card but seemed to be packed full of information and it was less than $8. Sorry I cannot remember the exact name but it was something along the lines of Calories, Fats and Carbohydrate's in favorite foods, or something to that effect, it also has a picture of the author on the front cover as well. We use a carb counting and meal planning book that was given to us by our daughters dietitian and it does cover some restaurant foods in general and works well enough for our needs, but you cannot buy this book, it was part of a nutritional class we took after our daughter was first diagnosed.

There is no such thing as Diabetic food. Just choices in food that are better for a Diabetic eating plan. Nothing is off limits if you plan for it. If you are eating out, look for baked, broiled meats, vegetables, salads, whole grains.. It's sometimes tough to do but it is doable. I have been out to eat the last few nights and I am a vegetarian so I just asked the waiter if he could suggest some entrees that didn't include meat and he was great about it. I made my choices from his suggestions. A lot of eating out is self control really, we know we shouldn't load up on the starchy stuff. You can always ask if you can order things ala carte or order an appetizer (smaller serving) and a salad. There are ways around it all, knowledge is power so arm yourself with the all the information you can and you'll be fine.

agreed, no such ting as diabetic food. Eat what you want but in the correct portions. Try to stay away from high sugar foods. Stay away from Soda if possible. Best way that I found for me to loose weight (Over 110 lbs in last 2 years and still loosing) is to lower your carbs. Not cut them out completley, Just lower them. Learn to cook with fake sugar. I prefer splenda, but that is a personal descision. As for eating out, I look at food as slices of bread. A slice of bread has about 15 grams of carbs. So a bun on a hamburger is 30 g carbs. Root vegtebles are also need to be counted as carbs. Potatoes, Beets, Carrots. stuff like that. I have found that I have been eating more meat then I did before, The fat content is not that good for me, I know this but I make up for it by being extra carfull on the other items I choose to eat. I eat alot more greens then I did years ago. I read the nutricial information where possible when I am shopping. So in carb counting, think of it as 30-45-60 and you should loose weight. That is 30 g carbs in the morning, 45g carbs for lunch and 60 for dinner. Thinking of this as slices of bread, that is 2 slices worth of carbs, 3 slices worth of carbs and 4 slices worth of carbs. This is what works for me. Hope this gives you an idea of how I do this.

Thanks Judy and Sarg. I have a terrible time trying to figure out what to eat and I know I'm doing most of it wrong. The hardest thing for me to get through this thick skull of mine is that FOOD can hurt you! No, I still don't have it figured out, don't know that I ever will. Being Type 1, I'm trying, but it seems like no matter what I do, it's not the right thing. I get really discouraged most days. I will try some of these suggestions, a lot of them sound very good.
Sondra, I am glad you're doing something now being pre-diabetic. Maybe if I had ever been diagnosed as pre-diabetic I could have prevented this. It's too late now, so I will just have to fight my way through it and hope for the best. Good luck Sondra! Angie
