What is the difference between Humalog and Novalog? My son use to be on Novalog then they switched him to Humalog and then back to Novalog. Is one more effective than the other?

Someone please correct me if I am wrong because this is only my understanding but Humalog has more human insulin content than Novalog does. Though similar this percentage is different. Again, I could be wrong this is just my understanding, I have also been on both, a few years back and then was put on a 70/30 mix.

As far as I know neither has any human insulin component and I don't think any insulin ever has.

I think Humalog and Apidra are engineered from E.Coli bacteria and Novolog is engineered from bakers yeast. The reason they are called human analogs is because they are chemically the same, with slight DNA changes, to human insulin but not actually derived from or contain human insulin.

Same effects, just different names. Supposedly derived from
human sources, or closer to a human version. Both are very good. One may just cost more than the other. Talk with your Dr. See what works for you.

They are human analogs, basically generically engineered insulins. Apidra is one as well. Each one is different, different amino acids are either swapped round or swapped out, and they all work slightly different. The base effect is the same but the onset times, length of action and general profile of action are all slightly different.

I just went thru this medication switch last week, lol My insurance did not want to pay for Humalog anymore…Navalog is VERY similar but much cheaper. They work the same but I posted a question about this medication switch myself…most said Navalog worked best anyhow. Hope that'll help ya hun. Good luck. Sheila

They are the sane, but different. When it comes to which one is better, that's really a personal thing. They both work in very similar ways but one may suit one person better than the other.

I ask my doctor this exact question because with my insurance Novolog was cheaper. He told me they were the same thing, just made my 2 competing drug companies. I could be wrong, but this is what I was told. Take care, Angie
