Who is or has been sick with the crud lately?

It hit me all at once. A sore throat followed by a runny nose and sneezing fits. Now I am clogged up and can't breath out my nose and it hurts to breath through my nose. Irritated throat makes me cough all the time and I can't sleep at all. Sound fimiliar? I also have body aches. Now this would just be a bad cold but it has got my sugars riding 300-400 day and night for 2 days now. And nothing is helping to bring them down. My Dr. put me on anti-biotics and zyrtec plus cough medicine. I got everything but the cough medicine. Cough med. never helps me and it was so expensive. I figured I would rather eat for a week instead. Has anyone else been dealing with the crud lately? Been effecting your B/G too?

You describe exactly how I have been feeling for the past 2 weeks. I have an apptment with my Dr. Thursday. I had also had a difficult time with my sugars. Usually aroung 250 now which is high for me. Guess it's high for any of us. Still getting used to to this and so much information to digest.

Edie 2009-10-28 13:02:25 -0500 Report

When we are sick our numbers go up that is how our bodies tell us there is something wrong and we need to find out what as soon as possible. I got a Med and then added my echonasia to the mix and am feeling better each day. Boy I just got a cold chill go thru me and then I sneezed what a feeling that gives me.

I am feeling better and today I went to help at the Extreme Makeover Home Edition site about 6 miles from my home and boy did I get tired out. I came home after just 2 1/2 hours of helping them. When they found out I had heart troubles and Diabetes and on insulin they kept me in the Sponsers Tent cleaning up only. They asked everyone for their Medical problems if any and I couldn't say none with my Dr. standing right there he also told them I couldn't lift over 20 pounds that is why I got sent to the light duty tent. LOL
I am bringing up so much more fleim after getting the fresh air today and I took a 3 hour nap when I got home. I am still tired but that just means I will go to bed early tonight.
Bill is on his last week of Truck Driver Training and then he will start with Werner Trucking Company next week they said. That is Great as it will give me extra money to Travel 3 times a year Bill and I decided that is more than enough for me to be gone 2-3 weeks at a time.
So I will be traveling South in January, anyone in that area I will be traveling in will be met as I get near them. I am starting in Kansas first and be there one week and coming back home till June or July unless Bill will be home at that time then I will leave the same day he goes back out on the Road.

I have been sleeping for nearly two weeks. I Have a 101-102 fever for 8 days, during which time I have not been able to control my blood sugar which is running 250-500, or control my blood pressure, which has been between 200/102-167/88. I feel better now, although I am still somewhat fatigued. For a while I thought I may have contrected H1N1.

We both went to the Dr on Monday the 19th and he has the Flu h1n1 and I have a bad case of Broncitis if it hangs on til Halloween then I will keep it till Spring Happens every year like this. Yuk
Bill is getting so much better on Mon he can go back to class and finish his Truck Driver School and then Start Work on the 2nd of Nov. Bill will be 55 tomorrow if he didn't get sick he wouldn't be home tomorrow as they wanted him in Indy then. They put it off till he is better and got his License.

I am a Type 1 diabetic and have had the crud for over two weeks now. My nose and sinuses are stuffed up and when I try to clear them I end up choking on all of the mucus. Nasal spray helps a bit, but doesn't last very long. All I can say is if it doesn't go aways soon I am going to buy stock in a facial tissue company.

Pat Roth
Pat Roth 2009-10-24 20:22:24 -0500 Report

I will offer a few remedies that, hopefully, may help the sinuses and headaches——go into your bathroom, turn on the hot weather and create lots of steam, is supposed to loosen the yuk, up—but also one can breathe better if the air is cold, so I would try both. Personally a mist vaporizer, cool and moist, made me worse, so try it for a short time first to see how you react—

If stuffed up, a pan of hot water, dab of vicks in it, setting on a solid, firm surface, throw a towel over your head, and inhale—-is more beneficial than a room vaporizer.

Warm wet rags for your forehead, apply one of those warmed rice or corn pillows, no danger of water and electricity that way, and set on top of the warmed cloths.

Rub your neck, forehead, chest with Vicks, apply warm towels from the microwave, use Mucinex to help loosen the phlegm, also Claritin or a cheaper substitute, drink LOTS of WATER, and REST!! If trouble eating, stick to broth, warm jello water or the water off of boiled rice or potatoes, onions——lemon in tea—-or ginger tea for the "runs"—-if vomiting, use straight Coke syrup from a fountain. No gurrantees, of course, but just some of the things that I have found helpful in my 77 years—-

And PRAY!! Love to ALL, Pat R

Edie 2009-10-26 17:42:09 -0500 Report

Thanks Pat I also use Halls cough drops and I use Echinacea 2 pills in the AM and 2 pills in the PM that builds up the Immune System and helps me get over the Yuk quicker.

Yhere is also a gadget called a nettie pit sold at drug stores. You fill it with saline solution and pour it slowly into one nostril and it comes oout the other side. Sounds gross I know but it cleans out the nose and helps with breathing.

Pat Roth
Pat Roth 2009-10-28 16:19:45 -0500 Report

What??? That does sound gross, BUT at the hospital and also our druggist, suggests using a saline solution, cheaper to make your own—-keep it fresh tho, how does pouring it in one nostril , then exit out the other side, work? I would think it would go down your throat first—-but saline is an excellent use for colds, sore throats and stuffy noses. They say that too much nasal spray can eventually, stop you up worse—My husband has used Afrin nasal spray, for years, YEAR AROUND—NOT a good practice, but now he can't breathe without it! Sad—

Try to avoid going out into public places, especially school functions right now—-easier for we older ones, NOT good for parents with children——WASH those hands. Most Dr offices now keep a bottle of sanit-zier at their desks—soap and water works wonders too—-don't shake hands or hug—-except on paper—-PR

I have been sick with whatever virus is going around now for 2 months. The cough and headaches/bodyaches are the worst. I have been to the doctor 3 times now, all he could do was give me something for the cough which I couldn't afford to fill even 1/2 of the prescription because my insurance won't except it. Yet, my cough is getting worse, and so are the aches & migraines.
My biggest problem is trying to get help for the migraines. I have been turned away from the ER (which is where I always went if my migraine medication at home didn't work.) I was told that this is not an emergency situation. Well, when I have migraines, I can't see, think, do anything that requires movement of any kind, I'm usually nauseated or vomiting, and every little noise pumps up the thud in my head. I can't function with a migraine. I have them sometimes for days or longer.
I just wish that the doctors could get on the same page and figure out what to do for us. I truthfully don't think they know what they are dealing with.
I was even checked for Swine flu, but the test was negative (TTL), yet there are so many cases of swine flu here that I couldn't tell you where the numbers are at.
I can't help to think that possibly the Swine Flu has mutated and become whatever it is that everyone has, which there is no help for.
I hope you all start feeling better sooner than I have not. If anyone has any suggestions about easing the symptoms, I sure am willing to listen.
Thanks for reading,

Have you concidered asking your dr, to write to the medicine cos. in your behalf. Many of them will help with the cost of their drugs when a pt. can't afford them. I don't know where you live but we have some clinics here that help with meds when they can. I hope this was of some help and you are feeling better soon.

pjeckert 2009-10-31 23:01:08 -0500 Report

I just got this Doctor last month. He is the 4th one this year. I don't move to different clinics, the Doctors come and go like flies on stink. It certainly would be a nice try, but I think that I would have to plead with the drug companies for myself. Besides the drug he prescribed I believe was a concoction of medicines. idk for sure though.
Thanks for the suggestion.

2catty—-I just discovered these posts—-are you OK now??? Of course it is Oct. but was just wondering how you came out and what was wrong with your lungs?? Let me known as it sounds so bad!! I have been very fortunate to not have that horrible feeling of breathing in "just dust"! Hugs, Pat R

2catty 2009-10-18 14:00:23 -0500 Report

Well you know I am not sick anymore, but I still get that cough sometimes that feels like breathing in dust. I wonder if it is asthma sometimes. I don't know for sure though. Thanks Pat for asking, how very thoughtful.

Pat Roth
Pat Roth 2009-10-18 17:34:04 -0500 Report

I was wondering if you are OK, partly as bronchitis hit my poor, left lung during the paast few weeks of the current flu epidemic—-It was NOT the swine flu, nor anything close—-but so much scar tissue inflamed by my recent surgery/ anesthetic=COPD/ asthma. At least my episode of kidney cancer removed on Sept 15th, forced the Drs to at least listen to my own whines about SOMETHING draining me, I was NOT coughing that hard—-nor achy etc, just DRAINED!!

Well, during the cat scan of the left lung was when they discovered the mass on my kidney, now GONE!! Because of the strain of all, I was on O2 for 3 weeks, now on it just at bedtime—-so am very curious and interested in anyone who has experienced about anything re- the lungs!

As for "breathing in dust"—-not sure that mine is like that, it just feels strained, tiring to breathe—-found out that part of mylung is so full of scar tissue from past incidents of bronchitis, that ANYTHING now triggers a lack of oxygen, plus the asthma—it is getting better but now I have a NAME for it and I can assure other Drs. that "It is NoT all in my head!! Thank you!!" haha—-If you REALLY KNOW what the problem is, then you can deal with the Drs in a more positive way!

Part of my own history was bronchitis for over a year when I was 6 yrs. old, when we lived out in western Kansas during the dust bowl days! I got so thin and weak, mom had to hold my head up and feed me. The Dr in those days, said to drink Cod Liver Oil and vegetable juices (no vitamins, I guess) for a year, and I was stong enough to attend the second grade that year. But most of my childhood was spent with my head lying on my desk and a stinkn/ cold!! One day I had forgotten my hanky so had to blow my nose on TABLET paper, or the hem of my dress——!! At 10 yrs old, I was humiliated! haha—-

Have you been on oxygen much? They FINALLY told me that every time I had surgery ( during the past 10 years) or got bronchitis, it compromised my breathing, and some day I would be on O2 constantly, but am off of it for now!! Thanks HEavens as I was in danger of Breaking my leg from getting tangled up in all of that tubing that runs the length of the house lately!!

It seems to me that once you have a prolonged episode with coughing, your lungs do take a toll. I was advised to take 3 slow, deep breaths off and on throughout the day to get fresh air down deep into those lungs—-have you used a spirometer? That will get the air down where it is really needed, but might set you up for coughing for a bit until you can clear that phlegm out! But that is a good thing!!

They have tests to determine asthma, ask a pulmonologist—-I would hate for you to go thru that again without some TOOLS to fight with!!

Keep us imformed, as I Pray that you regain most, if not all, of what you have lost!

Hugs, and prayers!!! Pat R

No new meds except the zyrtec but I have taken that before. No new foods, I don't know what is is. Sometimes I feel it may be because of the stomach acid that goes into my lungs sometimes because of gerd. I went to a gastro but they did not want to run a light down my stomach again. So I don't know. I made a appt. with my Dr. for tomorrow because on top of the breathing problems I feel disoriented to know. I have no energy at all but my sugars aren't that bad. Thanks everybody for your concern I hope I get to find something out tomorrow. Sometimes when you go to the Dr. you leave with more questions than you walked in with. So I will see.

I didn't know that you had GERD(should have checked your profile). I had symptoms like that the last time mine flared up. I had a build up of stomach acid irritating the esophagus(sp?) Went into Immediate Care and they gave me a liquid of some numbing medicine about a shot glass worth. Then they put me on a series of antibiotics to help with the flare. By now you have probably already been to the doc but just wanted to let you know that it could be the GERD or possibly an ulcer building up and releasing excess acid into your throat. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Humm that is interesting. Today it was a stand in Doc. and she did not know me and vice versa but I told her my problem and she wanted to avoid steroids for obvious reasons, but she thought it could be because of aspirations and wanted a chest x-ray and a cbc done. I really feel it's because of the aspirating because it's not viral, no one else is catching this. She did not prescribe anything though and my chest hurts so bad. Everytime I cough I feel like my head is going to blow off.

islandseashelling 2009-03-21 11:42:32 -0500 Report

ITs so frustrating to see a dr you don't know. I am so sorry for what you are going thru.

Are you taking liquid malox? Have they given you carafate? Aspirating into your lungs is scary.

About your coughing? Has your dr told you to get in the bathroom and turn on the shower. The hot steam helps considerably.

Additionally why haven't you been given advair or symbacort?

My son bought home that crud a month ago. I think its the worse thing we have ever had. The three days of 103 temp was just the beginning, The perpretrader who brought it home and refused to cover his mouth when he coughed had his turn into bronchitis. His younger brother' s turned into double ear infections, mine turned into pnuemonia and my husband who has refused to seek treatment for 3 weeks most likely has bronchitis.

2catty 2009-03-21 17:41:31 -0500 Report

I drink malox like soda at night. I take nexium and zantac but between the gerd and gastroparesis it is hard to control. I am thinking correction surgery. At this point it would be a sweet relief. I have never been given symbacort or advair but my son does take advair so I know what it is. I just hope my lung x-rays turn out ok. I am worried because I don't know what all the aspiration has done to the lining. It has been at least 9 years worth of damage. I have told many a Dr. about this problem. And until my Dr. now I was ignored.

I always get even worse by taking the shot than without. My Mom does take them due to suppressed immunes system from Hep C she got from a trasfusion in '88. All our docs agree that taking one would be benefical for her but it makes me and my Dad both extremely sick. Ended up in hospital both times I tried to take it. And it caused a huge flair up with Dad's Crohn's. As it is we are just very careful about using hand gel and taking lots of Vit C.

Boy that does seem ironic doesn't it? That has to suck with spring here. When my allergies break out I also get hives on my stomach. I scratch the blood out of myself. For two years I had hives on my legs and it finally went away. It looked horrible, it's called perivascular dermetitis. Or something like that.

Do you take any medication? I take some for allergies…I use to itch until I bleed all over. Sheila

I take lots of different meds plus allergy pills. I was taking claritin but now they approved the new generic form of zyrtec for $5.00 and I take those for allergies. I took a hairbrush to my tummy one time it itched so bad. I had blood all over my stomach. I could not stop either. The more I scratched the more intense it was.

How does the Zyrtec work for you? That's what I am on at 5pm…in the morning for allergies and breathing singulair and for anxiety/allergy I take visteral 3 times a day. So I am doing pretty good overall, but have moments where the allergies flare up…but not like they use to thank goodness. Sheila

That is what I do too Vicky, I spray everything, computer keyboard, mouse, light switches, anything that people in your household touch often, even refrigerator door handles, microwave handle, etc. It really does kill the 'regular' flu germs and many many other virus germs, etc.not swine flu though unfortunately. I am still trying to decide if I am going to get the swine flu shot, whenever it becomes available.

I had the Phononenia (spelling) shot and flu shot and got both flu's a & b and phonoenia laat year ending up in the hospital. It was horrible, ulgh! Then they gave me the shots again there so I dunno, it was weird. Sheila

Have any of you had a pneumonia shot? I had one 7 years ago and have not had the 'crud' since. I used to get bronchitis at least twice a year with a horrible cough that lasted forever and now I have to say I haven't had it in 7 years!! If you haven't had one, I recommend it to everyone. Diabetes makes us all candidates for it.

2catty 2009-03-15 22:26:16 -0500 Report

I had one but it was about 11 years ago. I have not had a Dr. say anything about one since. Just the flu vaccine. Which I do get every year. I do wonder why I never hear anything about it though.

Hey Judy! Yeah i got the pneumonia shot when I was around 37. He told me I couldn't get another one until I was in my 60's? Is it a one time wonder shot? I haven't gotten pneumonia since I got the shot. I did get it at least once a year. Must be some good stuff in that shot! Good to see you! Angie

My doctor told me that I don't need a booster until I'm 65 for the pneumonia shot. If you get it young, you need a booster I guess. I'm sure that story will change and evolve as they learn more too. I'll take it as long as I keep from getting the 'crud'… I don't miss it at all.

I am so glad everybody is doing better. Mine is still wanting to hang on. Stupid coughing fits. Sounds like I am gonna cough up a hair ball or something. Nasal passages are starting to get better, thank goodness. Yeah Arudee I know about Spring in the south. I am a TN girl and Dogwood's are the worst on me and guess what? They are blumming all around. They are so pretty but make me miserable. Feel better and Enjoy Spring. I am so happy that it is in 5 days. Happy Happy Joy Joy.

2catty, up here in northern Michigan, we still have scattered piles of snow!! I'm afraid Spring is writing us off the list this year!

No one so far, (knock on wood) in my house has gotten the crud, but I think that's due to the cold temps, no bacteria likes it up here, and I don't blame em, lol

Oh that wonderful pollen will start floating in the air soon. Then you will have all the swollen nasal passages and eyes plus the coughing and sore throats you can handle. Just give it a couple of weeks. You will be up to you neck in discarded tissues. LOL

2009-03-16 06:05:06 -0500 Report

Oh Catty, I can't wait on the pollen! I love the pretty yellow color of EVERYTHING! LOL! I thought that 1 inch of snow we got this winter would help, notta, lol. Yeah, I knew you were in Tennessee, I'm your neighbor in Alabama. Get well!

2catty 2009-03-16 12:24:35 -0500 Report

Thanks, and yep I guess the pollen has prob. started there too. It is 55 today and tommorow it is suppose to be 71 and getting progressively warmer. Today is our rainy chilly day. GLOOMY But tommorow will be better. Can't you just wait till your car turns yellow. Then your dog turns yellow from going out. Which is kind of funny till he comes in then shakes it. Errrr Enjoy! I love it more than winter. I hate winter.

So of course we was put on steriods for the breathing which just made the sugars REALLY go outta hand, what was worse was Ty (my fiance) he was so wired from the medicine I wanted to flush my head down the toliet! lol But we are doing better. Hope everyone starts feeling better. Sheila
