I thought I would share this as it was very scary for me and I didn't know what was going on. Saturday afternoon I started having belly cramping and a lot of growling and movement going on in there which resulted in a few bouts with diarrhea. I assumed it was because of the new medicine I'd been put on knowing that Metformin can cause tummy troubles. I was also belching this nasty boiled egg kinda smell and taste.
Around 2:30am Sunday morning all hell broke loose and I was on the toilet and it was like a faucet I couldn't shut off kind of diarrhea, and the belching was worse then ever. Even worse my BGL was going up into the 400s then down under 100 and back up again within an hours time. This went on all day Sunday and I was dehydrating even though I was drinking water like there was no tomorrow. I told my husband if it didn't get better by Monday morning I was going to have to go to the doctor somehow even though the diarrhea was so constant I didn't know how I was going to make the 30mi trip like this. If I ate, it made it 100 times worse and I was still having issues with my BGL being all out of wack. I went to bed around 9pm and tried to sleep but was in the bathroom more than in bed. About 10pm nausea struck me like a ton of bricks and I started vomiting and couldn't stop for what seemed like an hour and there was no diarrhea during this time. After it was over with, I felt soooo relieved, it was like I hadn't been sick in any way at all. Dean had called the doctor's office while I was getting sick only to get an answering service but the doctor did call him back, when he explained what I had gone through since Saturday afternoon and what was going on then, she told him it was NOT my medicine it was a very nasty flu bug that was going around that was causing it and to come see her this morning if it didn't get any better. She also said that is why my BGL's were all over the place as I was dehydrating and not eating well. (Was barely eating at all) Well, I got up this morning and felt fine other than I have muscles that ache that I didn't even know I had. Not only my stomach muscles but my legs hurt like crazy too. I think some of it is because I was so dehydrated and I know some of it is from the diarrhea and vomiting. I'm sorry for the graphic details but I have never felt something like this and thought I would share it as a warning that this bug is out there and I hope it doesn't reach any of you.

I am very sorry.
I was trying to hit the thumbs up button, but hit the thumbs down instead. I have tried to retract my mistake. I am sorry.

My husband got a nasty bug from the emergency room the night I was put into the hospital. By the time I was sent home 3 days later he was one sick puppy. He was down for 6 days. Getting up tp give me my medicines and back to bed. We have been married 45yrs and I have never seen him that sick. Our daughter caught a bug from the hospital at the same time. It went through her family one member at a time. They didn't get as sick as Grandpa thank goodness. I hope all of you who have the creeping crude are on the road to feeling better.

I dunno what to think. Ty has had some symtoms for SIX weeks now, off n on, more on though. He has been to the doctor over it, been put on some fiberlaxitive…which made things worse so Ty just called yesterday and the doctor said to go off it…but still he's having problems. I think he's gonna have to go to a GI doctor of some sort. His sugars have been up n down, usually fair though thank goodness. I just feel awful for him, plus for me cuz I never get to use the darn toliet, lol Anyone have any clue what he may have going on? I know it's probably hard cuz ya dunno his situation, *sigh* I am just worried though. Okay, had to vent, thanks Sheila

This same kind of bug ran thru my home this winter. It started with my husband and one by one took each of us down. It was wicked! My sides were sore for days and it took a whole week to really feel back to normal. I didn't have the highs that you had, but I couldn't get anything below 200 for a few days. We picked ours up from a visit to the emergency room...as the couple that we were there with also go the same thing at the same time. So maybe you got that in the hospital...so watch your family. It spreads in about 2 day increments. At least that is how ours did.

Jackie, sorry to hear you are still dealing with this darn bug! I hope the medicine helps some at least though. Good luck! Sheila

I just read this. I spent the past week at the race track. On Sunday I started feeling cruddy, by the time I got home Monday it was really, really bad. By Monday night it was just as described above ( no need to repeat details). I thought I might have ate something bad at the track. Called my Dr this Am and was told that it was a really bad flu bug going around. He said not to try to come in. Like I could go that far from bathroom. Feeling somewhat better now, but still yuckky. I had my flu shot and still… Hope you are feeling better now.

Sorry to hear you caught it too Jackie, unfortunately the flu shot does not help against this stomach bug, I do hope your better soon, and don't have to gain relief in the same manner that I did but I'm glad it ended my misery for the most part, yesterday I still had small twinges I guess you'd call them, in my stomach but no more trips to the bathroom because of it, today I was back to normal, well, normal for me lol, please take care and drink a lot of fluids, I drank gatoraide, being Sunday and nothing open it was the only thing we had in the house that might help and I drank a ton of water as well, and was still dehydrated , I even had issues getting blood from finger pricks because I was dehydrating so badly. I feel your pain and I hope it ends for you very soon! Please take care.

I never get the flu and I never get a flu shot. I take 2000 units of vitamin D3 daily. There was a study done in a nursing home that showed that taking vitamin D was better than getting the flu shot.

rbergman 2009-03-09 18:28:44 -0500 Report

Hey Skip,
I usually don't get the flu either, never had a flu shot in my life for that matter but I guess my streak of luck was over lol I was curious to know, you said you take 2000units of D3 daily, is that a shot then since you're talking units? Our daughter's Ped Endo said we could get Vitamin D pills for her (looked locally, no such thing around here), so I ordered them online from Wal-Mart. Not that I would give her shots was just wondering by the way you said that if it was shots or pills.

It posted twice for some reason so I deleted this one lol

SkipT 2009-03-10 19:21:09 -0500 Report

Actually it is a 1000 iu gel capsule. I take one in the morning with breakfast and one in the evening with dinner.

rbergman 2009-03-10 19:38:11 -0500 Report

Thanks Skip, I haven't seen those, but I did find OTC vitamin D pills, the chalky looking kind. Are yours OTC or script?

Yuck girl. What a horrible day for you. I wound up getting the flu shot twice this year, lol, but I don't think that covers the stomach flu! I have been dealing with the stomach crap for a while now but mine it because of the Iron shots. I hope you are better now and maybe this was your 24 hours of heck for the year! Get Well NOW! Ang

Even though they recommend that diabetics get flu shots every year, the flu shot at present doesn't protect us from all of the strains, just the ones that are the most likely to hit this year. So the only hope we have against getting the flu is proper hygiene and the yearly flu shot. And with that all we can really do is hope it protects us against the strain that's out there.

I agree, I wonder now if last weekend when Laura had bouts of diarrhea herself if it was this flu bug I caught, Wade also showed some signs of it on Friday this week, neither had it near as bad as I did, Thank God, I can't imagine a child having to deal with the horror I went through and I have a pretty high tolerance for pain and such but this was nearly unbearable and NOTHING seemed to help.

I forgot to add that both of my parents always got the flu shot and lived well into their 80's, every year while in the army I was forced to get the flu shot (for national defense reasons), and my otherwise extremely healthy Aunt Hulda died from the flu. Aunt Hulda didn't believe in flu shots

ACK! Sorry Robin to hear of what you just went thru. I sure hope it don't come my way whereas last year I was in the hospital for Phoemia (spelling) AND the flu is it a and b? I dunno it was both all at the same time! Oh my gawsh that was horrible, and I also have terrible breathinig issues so that of course did not play well. What area are you from? I'll look at your profile after this and probably answer that, lol. Anyhow, glad you are doing better. Sheila
