A Suggestion

Some of you will note that you get no response or activity when posting a new "discussion". Most of these are cases where the writer has done nothing more than cut & paste an article or information that they've found on the Internet. The information is good, but simply stating facts (in other people's words) does not promote a "discussion". It would seem to me that those belong in "News & Articles", rather than "Discussions".

If you could read the article and find some way to put it into your own words it would mean more. Relating it to your own experiences promotes discussion. You also need to ask a question or ask for an opinion. This is what gets minds working and allows a good discussion to follow.

The site is here to provide information, but discussions that involve the thoughts, opinions and experience of others is the what I find most helpful.

Has anyone else noticed this? Do you agree or disagree with my comments.

Its copyright infringment when someone posts a news article as a discussion and then doesnt give intellectual credit to the author or provide a link to the original article. Its rampant here again and should be reined in. I agree with you that its not a discussion.

I agree with you Diane. I have a bad habit of not commenting on a "News Article" in the discussion area simply because the article normally answers all questions and I have no comment to make. I think a lot of this is brand new members who were not here last month and didn't know this was a long discussion 1 month ago. Also, being a new diabetic, I can't answer some of the real questions because they are Type 2 or something I have no knowledge of. I'm not being rude in not responding, just won't and can't direct anybody that I have no knowledge of myself. Hugs! Angie

Not sure how to respond to this at all but I'm going to state my thoughts and if it offends anyone so be it. Is this school where we have to read the book and put the book report into our own words? We are all entitled to our own opinions that's true however, it's things like this that make people leave the site or not speak up because they are afraid they 'aren't doing it right'…

I won't bother anyone with my information anymore.

It is meant to be a suggestion that promotes input from everyone and encourages "discussion". Not intended to offend anyone at all, or to tell anyone what or how to write. As I said before, this is not something that is "wrong", but just doesn't get good discussions going.

I feel your comments are directed at me, and to be honest I forget all about News and Articles, you are right I have been posting them in the wrong area, sorry, things haven't been going well for my household lately and I simply forgot and started putting them here, I won't do it again, but I feel you could have sent me a message reminding me that I was putting them in the wrong area, I don't think there needed to be a discussion based soley on my mistake.

No, not at you alone. Others have done this too. There's actually nothing wrong with doing that, but it just seems that really good discussion doesn't come unless people are asked for their own experiences, thoughts, opinions, etc. The information is wonderful, and I've learned a lot from all of it. Even after all these years of living with diabetes, I continue to learn. Thanks for responding, Robin. You've provided invaluable info on the site. I always find your discussions helpful and well thought out.

Sorry Diane, I find my moods aren't the greatest lately and I shouldn't have snapped on you. I honestly just forgot about putting the info I get in emails in the news and articles and didn't realize it until you brought it up, so thank you and again I'm sorry for snapping at you.

If anyone has a reason to be out of sorts, it certainly is you. You all have been through so much that I don't know how you've held up as well as you have. I pray things begin to be less stressful for you soon, and that Laura can just concern herself with being a little girl again…not have to deal with all that she's been dealing with. She's such a cutie! Hope you'll be able to rest and be a little less worried too, altho we never cease worrying about our kids. Mine are all grown and have kids, but I still worry about them occasionally.

Anyway, I truly was not singling you out, but I've seen this happen often since I joined. I was really just trying to get some good discussions going.

Have a good weekend! Diane

One of the problems of doing what you're doing is that by posting copied articles and not referencing the original work you are breaking copyright rules. It's also kind of a slam to the original author as it comes accross like you wrote it yourself.

I have no problem with people posting a copy and paste as a discussion but it should at least include a link to the original source or other acknowledgment and ideally a personal commentary about how you feel about it.

Exactly. I started to mention that previously as well.

And as I stated it was a simple mistake on my part, okay, I have a daughter that every few weeks they find another medical issue that could be life threatening going on inside of her, unless your a parent of a young child going through something similar you cannot possibly understand. I haven't even been a member of this community for a month and with my stress levels the way they are I simply forgot about the separate pages for news and articles. I WAS NOT purposely doing copyright infringements or fraud or whatever you want to call it.
I apologized once for posting in the wrong area and I will not do it again, but I will repeat what I said earlier if you had such a problem with me doing this why create a discussion about it, you could have sent me a message reminding me I was posting wrong, or even contacted the site manager about it, but why put it on a discussion? So everyone that agrees with you that I screwed up can admonish me time and time again???
And while we are at it, why is this such a big deal but the fact that every 3 or 4 days we have non-diabetic discussions started over and over, WHY do we need 10 different discussions on the same exact topic of good morning, good afternoon, good evening? Isn't just ONE discussion on it enough???? I guess so because nobody chooses to speak about all the non-diabetic related posts taking over the site but it's ok to create a discussion about me making a simple mistake of forgetting where to post news and articles…at least the posts i mistakenly put here were diabetic related.

I really do not understand the hostility. As I said, this was not directed at you specifically. This is not to "admonish" you or anyone. It is a SUGGESTION. And I could not agree with you more about the stupid off-topic discussions that go on day after day. You willl note that I do not participate in them. I have expressed my thoughts on those discussions - more than once. I cannot stop them, however. It is not my call. And I am not trying to stop you from posting whatever you wish to post. I called myself offering a productive suggestion. Frankly I'm about ready to get off this site anyway, so I will not comment on this again. And no one was asking for or expecting an apology from you or anyone.

By the way, I can't believe you haven't seen the numerous comments posted on all the silly "good morning", etc., discussions on the site. It has been discussed to death.

We all understand the difficulties and pressures you're living with right now. In fact, I know I feel honored that you would choose to come here to help process all that is happening in your life and find supportive friendships. That's what is best about this site.

And for reasons I don't fully understand, discussions around site improvement suggestions can become very emotional very quickly.

I think this was a simple, well-meaning suggestion. And let's make sure we all recognize that no one is in trouble. No one is *mad* about posting of articles.

LadyDi was offering one idea that she thought could make the site better.

If someone disagrees with the suggestion, you are welcome to share your point of view. Or if you agree with it, you can speak your mind as well.

But my suggestion is that we keep this discussion focused on what can make the site better instead of letting our emotions get the best of us. If this discussion turns into personal attacks and insults, that won't serve to help anyone and I will have to close the discussion.

Again, let's just recognize that no one is in trouble here.

I guess I'm the only one that doesn't "get it" again I can't understand why this wasn't brought to my attention in a private message and not broadcast in a public discussion.

I've learned a lot here and would like to come away from this believing that I was helpful to others as well, regardless whether I did it in the wrong section or not.
Lesson learned.

rbergman 2009-02-27 21:03:03 -0600 Report

I saw it directed at me as it only came moments after I posted 4 or 5 articles in a row here instead of where they were supposed to be.
As I said, lesson learned.
