Yup, hunger is a very well-documented symptom of high blood sugar. That's often how I can tell if I'm too high -- why do I feel so hungry just an hour or two after eating?

Yes, when I had numbers in the 300's and above I was always hungry. Since I've got better control now than I did in the past with my BG levels I have found that I am not nearly as hungry. Although I did notice something odd when I added a multi-vitamin to my daily regimen, the vitamin seemed to make me hungry as it did when I had high numbers so I've switched and take it before bed now. I would think I'd still get all the benefits from the vitamin even taken at night, at least I hope so!

If I do not have an appetite at meal time then I know my blood sugar is higher than normal. It never fails. I delay the meal and take insulin to lower the sugar level until my apetite returns. If I am lower than normal I am very hungry.

I am just the opposite. I tend to feel very hungry and have unbelievable cravings when my bs is to low. It's like I can't eat food fast enough. Which is not very good cause then your blood sugar go's sky high if you don't know when to stop, or eat the wrong things. It's a vicious cycle.

Thank goodness that since I've been diagnosed, I haven't run high but once or twice and that was only for a few hours. From my one and only A1C of 13.7, I had diabetes for months before I was diagnosed. I was working at the bank and I stopped at the grocery store just about every morning and bought tons of things to eat (and drink.) I munched and drank all day long. I know now it was because my BS was through the roof, but I just thought my appetite had REALLY INCREASED, lol. Now with my BS back in good order, I don't crave food or drinks like that. Angie

We must be twins. :) I crave everything salty but very rarely crave sweets and when I do it's usually dark chocolate. Just recently gave up the diet soda and still dream of Diet Dr. Pepper.

That is interesting—-I never connected my cravings for food with diabetis. Our bodies are so complicated that it is sometimes hard to sort through our feelings and know what is causing what! Have a Great Day, Pat R

I do get hungry, but more so thirsty. Today was one of those days.. had a 405 at lunch but I'm now down to 258 (at nightly lantus time). went threw 1 1/2 pots of coffee and 3 liters of diet pepsi today.

rbergman 2009-02-25 23:52:01 -0600 Report

Thirst is a biggy for me too, I have an addiction to diet dr. pepper though and I can't decide if its the addiction or the high bg that makes me drink it more, the last few days my highs were horrible too and I drank 3 times as much fluids as I normally do.

Yes when my sugar used to go high I would get a major craving for sweets! And I would go to the bathroom alot. Now my sugars r under control but I have to deal with low blood sugars from time to time. Which the symptoms of low sugar is worse than syptoms of high sugar. Like sweating alot and shaking and loss of balance! It's very scary

rbergman 2009-02-25 18:43:32 -0600 Report

I don't get that starving feeling right away with a high, mine is just the opposite, I don't feel hungry at all just a major headache and vision issues first, once I take insulin to try to bring it down THATS when the starving feeling hits me, which sucks because I take insulin to bring it down then want to eat everything in sight which sends it right back up, its a vicious cycle that I thought I was the only one that had. Good to know it isn't just me, but sucks for us all.

roshy 2009-02-25 14:13:00 -0600 Report

yes yes and doube yes!!

Once i reach a high blood sugar the more i want to eat!! and the more sugar i crave! and the thirst is very strong iswell. but the best thing for me to deal with this is to drink plenty of water and maybe take a few units of insulin and stay away from food until it comes down because the more food i eat the more i want, and i crave carby foods!! i need to be a little stricter on what i eat though!! because the highs are getting too high and harder and to stablise !!

dyanne 2009-02-25 23:05:24 -0600 Report

Oh boy Roshy do I agree with you !!!! I crave the sugar and the carbs… and have not been doing very well with the food and my sugars show it . Do you have a weight problem ?? I do and its real bad…Ugg!!!!

roshy 2009-02-26 06:44:47 -0600 Report

well like most ladys my age i am concious of mu weight but i wouldnt consider myself very over weight! i would like to shed a couple of pounds just to be a little happier in myself. I find the insulin does make you build up the pounds which is a pain in the behind! I tend to exercise alot more in the future, not just to help with the weight but with everything! circulation and sugars and fittness!! the worst thing i ever done was get a car!! i was thinking of buying a bike so i could cicle !! i used to love to go on my bike as a child!! or i might consider swimmin again! i think exercise is proving to be more and more important and relavent to controlling diabetes each and every day!! if i do well i might get a pump!! yay! x

Very definitely, you feel hungry when your sugars are high. This is a classic sign of hyperglycemia. I've mentioned before that excessive hunger is a symptom of elevated sugars. It's good that you notice. This can assist you in the treatment of the problem and help control your diabetes.

Others symptoms are excessive thirst and excessive urination.
