I was just wondering why some people with type 1 diabetes get offended when they are compared to people with type 2 diabetes, I am curious because of something I heard at diabetic camp the other week, I am a type 2 and only like 4 people there know that, and so I just don't really see why that offends some people. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me why that might offend someone.

For me, I was one of the type 1's in the dark about type 2. I resented people even calling it diabetes, but that train of thought came from parents, family, Docters and nurses! I got type 1 at about 6 years old and grew up being told "it shouldn't even be called the same name I was inflicted with it and they had brought it on themselves."

19 years on, and having found my way to the internet, I know see it in a totally different light, like many people on here have said most of the resentment and anger comes from lack of knowledge and the perception of type2 diabetes.

I feel for type 2's, as a British type 1 I'm incredibly lucky to be cared for under some fantastic Docters ect. But type 2's seem to have a much harder time getting the help, care and information they desperately need to stay fit and healthy!

I'm glad to say having educated my self better I can now educate others when I am asked the difference. Instead of my previous "it shouldn't even be called diabetes" remarks … United we stand divided we fall ☺️

I think people get upset because it is a lack of education. I know not everyone knows the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 nor do people care if they do not have family members or friends with diabetes. Its kind of like comparing apples and oranges to me.

Apparently the camp was filled with people EASILY "offended" it seems?!

They are very different creatures, which share parts/pieces of the same name. Can not tell you why someone might even get offended… not a T2 myself so could not tell ya.

T2 in theory, theory mind you can alter the direction their disease takes, in theory anyway??? In that vein, T1's cannot eliminate their condition.
Regardless, no offense found being compared to my T2 "cousins"?

Because its a stereotype problem. People asume that you got diabetes from eating too much sugar and you automatically have to be overweight. I personally don't care about any of that, but that's the biggest reason why. And also the fact that type 2 is so common that when you tell someone you have diabetes they automatically act like they know everything about it because they know someone with the other type.

There is a perception out there (more common than we'd like to believe) that Type 2's are all a bunch of overweight people that got diabetes by sitting around watching TV eating doughnuts and drinking 42 oz. Coca-Colas.
Sadly this thinking includes some type 1's.

As a Type 1, I am not offended nor resentful if compared to others with Type 2. I view it as an opportunity to educate and enlighten people. Both types require us to manage our disease with choices about diet and exercise. Our medications may or may not be different (Insulin vs oral vs management by diet and exercise alone.) In fact, in some ways, I think I may have an easier time managing my diabetes with insulin (I'm pumping) since I can skip meals and just not bolus for the skipped meal. I have diabetes and I deal with it. Anyone who is learning about their condition and doing everything to manage it well deserves praise. Some of the Type 1's who may become offended may be under the mistaken idea that Type 2's "caused" their disease by overeating…they are just displaying their ignorance since it is not that simple. Hold your head high, learn as much as you can and be strong enough to make the right choices.

The only way to find out why anyone is offended by something is to ask them. Once you ask them then you have to be open minded enough to accept what they tell you. Keep in mind they have every right to be offended no matter how senseless it may seem to you. There is no point in arguing with them or try to tell them they have no reason to be offended.

People are always going to be offended by what someone says or does. I find this happens a lot with closed minded immature people. I have gotten to the age and point in my life that I really don't care if people are offended by anything I do or say. It is up to them to get over it. I am not a politically correct person. I speak my mind and if people don't like it, too bad.

Don't worry about why people are offended. No matter what you do, it is not going to change their minds or opinions. Take care of yourself and let them do the same. Odd are you and no one else will change them that is something they have to do. Enjoy your camp and what you are learning and make friends. Have fun and enjoy your life.
