Does being a diabetic cause hair loss?
I have long hair and every time I brush I get a big hand full of hair.

Although I have noticed changes in my hair, I didn't think to attribute it to diabetes or the medications I take. I don't know why it hadn't ocurred to me before now. I have always had thin, fine, blonde, straight hair…but in the past few years, it has grown at the same fast rate, but it has grown in darker and darker and it's own version of curl or wave and texture with a healthy dose of gray now. I do notice hair falling out during shampooing and combing and simply running my fingers thru it during the day. I suppose this is just another one of those lovely aspects to deal with regarding diabetes.

I was told hair loss is not due to diabetes but is either caused by the meds you are on or a thyroid problem. I also thought my hair loss was due to being a diabetic until tests came back and it was my thyroid. Problem fixed no more hair loss!

I have being diabetic for 15 years and I have not had any hair loss. I have taken insulin in the past and I take several medications including Metformin plus I color my hair every 4 months. So for me it has not been an issue.

I had hair loss regularly, for about two years, but was diagnosed in Nov. So I don't know if it had anything to do with the diabetes. I had asked several hair dressers and they all said stress and I was under a lot of stress some of the time. Every time I would brush my hair, I would see more than usual. But I don't have thinning hair or any bald spots. Well I have noticed the last few months since my blood sugars have been under control that this doesn't happen as often.

I too have noticed alot of hair loss. In the shower and in the brush. I thought it may be from the diabetes. I have always had thin fine hair, but it has not always been falling out until I was told that I had diabetes.

Hi! Everyone who has answered to my problem. My blood sugars are very low always. My doctor just ran blood work and checked every thing that my body does. So I doubt that it is my thyrod. The hair loss just started since October when I diaganosed diabetic.
so I thought it just might be the diabetes.
Thank You

I too have hair loss, I used to have the thickest, darkest, longest black hair, then it started falling out constantly after I was diagnosed, got thinner and really doesn't grow worth a hoot now, I was diagnosed 9mo after Laura was born and had had 2 Depo shots (birth control)between her being born and me being diagnosed diabetic…I don't know if it's the combination, or just one or the other, still taking same insulin and still getting same Depo shots so who knows…did I mention I went from black to salt and pepper in this same time frame lol

I also noticed the texture of my hair changed to fine. And it started to come out. But I thought it had more to do with either the psoriasis on my scalp or the chronic pain I suffer from; because I just don't eat much because of the pain. And have in fact lost a considerable amount of weight because of both the "starving" I have both done to my body as well as eating correctly when I'm with my friends who watch out for me and I'm walking and feeling good because when I am around him; he is better than any drug.

I have been living with the aftermath of anorexia and the harm it has done to my body, and believe me, a vitamin deficiency is definitely one big problem.

All of my blood sugars are low and my A1c's since I went on the Metformin, have been below 5.6; So its not a case of high blood sugars in my case.

And I'm not Anorexic no matter how the "starving myself" comment might have come across. Its just that the pain in my body is so bad, day and night that not only can I not sleep (hardly getting 2 or 4 hours a day if I'm lucky) but I have a hard time eating three meals a day or even holding them all down. I take so much medication that its hard to consider swallowing even one more thing, even if its just a piece of fruit. Since 99, I've lost over 250pounds. And continuing to lose weight.

Have you had your thyroid checked ?? I know if that is off you can have hair loss, also being anemic can have the same effect… let me know how you do.
good luck dyanne

I have been on metformin for a long time.I have never noticed my hair coming out.I know the texture changed from course to fine.I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

I don't know if being diabetic causes hair loss, but the minute I started taking Metformin my hair started falling out for months. It has since stopped thank goodness. My doctor said it wasn't the Metformin, but I still believe it was.

My doctor said Metformin shouldn't have caused my hair loss but that maybe because of the trauma my body has gone through from having very high blood sugar to bringing it down and being controlled. I am still losing my hair, I started taking a multivitamin and a hair, skin and nails vitamin (found at any drug store) some have recommended taking prenatal vitamins but I hadn't discussed that with my doctor. I told him about the others and he said they were okay, as long as I didn't see any spikes high or low in my sugar levels. He had checked my thyroid on my first A1c test, but said that he would check it again on my 3rd A1c test in May. I also had very thick hair before and now it is very thin.

With the vitamins I have noticed new hair growing back, of course I want it to be super think again overnight but I have to remind steps, baby steps…:)

I have had a sprinkling of white hair framing my face since I was 13. It has spread and to silver, gray, and white still framing my face, but it is alot bigger frame. I also have been loosing several hand fulls of hair every thim I brush or comb it. It has become straw-like in the last 10 months. I know part of is the extreme heat this year. I have tried shampoos & conditioners and a few hair treatments. Nothing seems to help. Oh well. I can always wear a hat.
