I had to stop all oral diabetic medications as most of it has sulfa drugs in it and I am allergic to sulfa drugs. As my blood sugar went up even with more and more pills, I got more and more unattractive symptoms (such as swollen legs). I love being on an insulin pump. Believe it or not, it is easy to use, easy to wear, and saved my life.

Hey there,
I just created a new post about my daughter, she was started on Metformin today, and within a 4wk period she will go from 500mg per day to 2000mg per day. She is only 7yrs old. The discussion is posted under Newly Diagnosed and topic is Update on Laura, rather than put it all here your welcome to read it to see how the plan of getting her to that dosage is to take place.

I'm taking 500 - 2X day. I take it first thing in the morning along with my other pills (after my bg test) and before my evening meal. I initially had some stomach problems, but that has gone away. It does help to take them with food.
Good luck to you!

When I use to be on the Pills, my Dr. Had me take 1,000mg Metformin & 10mg Glipzide in the morning, Avandia 8mg at lunch, and another 1,000 mg Metformin & 10 mg Glipzzide in the evening with dinner. this commination kept me in good numbers for about 6 months. I'm sure your dr would want you to split up the times like I did.. but better to check with him/her first.. or if unable to conntact the dr right away.. check with pharmacy where it was filled for advice till you can contact the dr. .. Metformin is to be taken with food, so you need to take it DURING your meals. Did your doctor not tell you what he/she wanted you to do?
I would call them and find out what the goals of the increase are. Are you going to try to stabalize your levels or lower them? I would imagine that would determine if you take two at a time or spread them out all day.

I know it probably depends on the person how you take it. This is the way my Dr told me to do it.

GabbyPA 2009-02-06 09:55:42 -0600 Report

It is just if you take it during your meal, you have less chance of stomach upset. I found if I take it before or after, I endup with acid reflux or a little tummy trouble...nothing serious, but better avoided. But right on the perscription bottle, is says take with food. I am toying with upping my dose as well, and it sucks that you have to take it with food, because I would love to take one at bedtime to help with my AM numbers...I have to see what the doc says.

Gabby, My doctor wants to stabalize my levels. They have been up and down. I had a lot of stress in my life. I was thinking it could be that.

GabbyPA 2009-02-06 21:07:00 -0600 Report

If it is to stabalize, then he might suggest spreading it out. But I am not sure. I am going to ask mine about doing it 4 times a day and getting it spread out to cover me all day long. You will have to let me know what you end up doing.
