Good blood sugar for workouts

I haven't really worked out regularly since I've gotten type 1 diabetes in high school and was wondering how everyone manages their blood sugar during workouts. My workouts vary a lot from bike riding to weight lifting. Typically I like to eat a protein bar of something with a little carb amount before workouts to get my blood sugar up to a safe level. Is it unhealthy jacking up your blood sugar before working out? What are your thoughts?
