This morning my sister was insisting that she come with me for my Ultrasound appointment. I told her it wasn't necessary because I have had one and she could go help build a KaBOOM Playground at a school in the community. When I arrived at my appointment. I wished I had told her to come with me.

When I was told my doctor had called radiology and changed my Ultrasound to a CT Scan with dye, I was livid. I explained that in the past I get an allergic reaction to X-Ray dye. I was asked if my doctor prescribed pre-treatment medication. I said she never called me to tell me she changed the test so she wouldn't know that I could possibly have an allergic reaction.

The tech explained what he could do to try to prevent any reaction. He even called my doctor. While he was on the phone, my phone rang. It was our Neighborhood Services Sgt. wondering why I was not at the KaBOOM. I started crying and told him I should have told my sister to come with me because I might need her to help me get home. He told me to call him when I was finished and he would come get me. The tech had talked to the doctor and told me what he would do. The test was over in less than 10 minutes and I was a little woozy. I called Sarge and he told me he found my sister and dropped her off at the hospital but would come back and get us.

I do have a bad infection. I won't know how it will be treated until Friday. I called my health center to find out how to file a complaint about the doctor and was told who to email to get the information. The forms arrived, I completed them and emailed them back to the person. I am done with this doctor and I hope she is moved out of this health center.

This is the reason why each person has to learn to advocate for themselves. This woman put me at risk of having another medical issue because she failed to consult with me. She called me. I told her the first time someone screws with me, shame on me, the second time shame on them because now I have to bring you down. I told her I filed a complaint and that since she put me at risk of a health problem I didn't need I hope she is fired from that job and hung up. I also told the Radiology department to send the results to my own doctor.

The good thing is I am cooking and blending veggies to enhance the soups. I am also making my version of a shake that keeps my blood sugar up since I am not eating carbs. I take one bottle of Ensure, three scoops of real ice cream, real Root Beer Soda and milk and make a milkshake. My blood sugar is very good because of this. I have not had a high or low.

Thank you Joyce for keeping us informed. I am so sorry to hear what they Almost did to you. And I say Almost because you were able to catch it and get it corrected. You are in my heart and in my prayers. I am wishing you the best and I hope you are able to get a new doctor that is more aware and concerned for his/her patients.

Thanks for letting us know how you're doing Joyce. I'm glad you have such a good support network, that you're not afraid to ask questions and stand up for yourself, and that you're finding a greater variety of foods you can eat. Maybe try blending some frozen fruit into your shake for extra vitamins/phytochemicals? ~Lynn @Glucerna

Thanks Lynn, I am kicking myself for forgetting to get some strawberries at the Farmers Market Sunday. I am not going to forget this Sunday. I have avoided fruit. I had an orange shake and the acid almost had me screaming. When I eat the node gets really large and makes the side of my tongue hurt really bad. I was high on percocet and felt no pain until the acid from the orange hit my tongue. I was in excruciating pain for over an hour.

I'm so sorry to hear about the acid in the orange Joyce. Strawberries should be better, and you could try melon or banana. I like to cut up bananas into pieces, wrap them in saran wrap and freeze them. Thawed out just a little they add a creamy texture to smoothies, and you can use just 1/4 of a banana. Varying the taste of your food helps keep it interesting. I hope the infection resolves soon. ~Lynn @Glucerna

I am allergic to banana's. I was at the market today and the strawberry's looked like the tried using them in a paintball gun.

Thanks James. That shake is delicious. I also make plain milkshakes with ice cream and milk and then pour in some root beer. I am doing what I can to eat.

HI Joyce,

You are absolutely right. Patients really have to advocate for themselves, including in some cases protecting themselves from complications. I hope you get the treatment you need for your infection soon. Glad to hear you are taking such good care of yourself. And what a great support network you have.

Take care!

Dr. Gary, I have a long list of foods I want to eat when I get better. Some is not good for me but I think after almost a month of liquid food, I deserve something really good.

Those two officers look out for me as much as I look out for them. I love those guys they are just so very special.

Hope you feel better and get back to your regular diet soon. It's so important to have supportive people in our life!

So good that you spoke up for yourself…we all need to do more than that. I remember when I was starting on my pump. I was sending in BG readings frequently to the endo because the initial settings need to be adjusted. When I was told that there were no adjustments after one particular week, I knew that was wrong. I called back and suggested they look at what I had sent them again and, surprise, they made adjustments. They then insisted that I use their form to send in my readings. I suspect that because I hadn't used "their" form, they hadn't bothered to check what I sent in. Hope things get better for you after Friday, when they decide on a course of action. Keep us posted!

Lou I hate when they screw up and try to blame the patient. That was a we will show you move. They knew the information was there. They used the form as an excuse. They would have done nothing if you had not said something. The squealy wheel always gets the grease.

I've learned to become "Squeelier" as I get older and like myself better for it!

Lou some of the problems start at the front desk. I had a receptionist call me and tell me not to come for my appointment when I lost my health insurance. When I didn't come the doctor called and asked why I missed my appointment. I told him why and he asked if i could come to the office in 10 minutes. He chewed out the receptionist. She was so mad with me she said he told her she didn't make any decisions in his office. Her job is to schedule appointments and take payments. I told her now we both know what your job duties are and If I were you I would do them.

That is good news Joyce, I am glad it is not serious. Glad you stood up for yourself, but that is you, and I wish everyone was like that. I know I am too. God bless.
