For the first time since being diagnosed, I had to go to the ER because I was unable to eat properly. I woke up Saturday with a lump under my jaw. At first I thought it was an abscess on a tooth but I didn't have a tooth ache. By Sunday evening I could not chew without excruciating pain. I started taking Tylenol which was no help.

I started looking for foods I could eat that didn't require chewing. and ended up with cream soups and pudding. Yesterday morning I woke up and my neck was really swollen so off to the ER I go. It turns out I have an infected Lymph Node. The doctor told me not to eat anything tart and to try to get my blood sugar back up. He gave me antibiotics and something for pain.

The challenge was what can I eat that will help me feel full and bring my blood sugar up. I was blending vegetable soup in a blender just so I could drink it. I was still eating the pudding but not the jello or yogurt. Last night my blood sugar was down to 48 and there was nothing I could think of that I could eat that would help bring it up. My sister suggested making iced tea with real sugar. I did that and started sipping it. My blood sugar came up slowly. I put it in the fridge to keep until I can start eating the proper foods. The only good thing about this is I have lost 4lbs which is good.

What do you do when you are ill and cannot eat properly?

I have found glucose tabs help me to raise my BG but since you can't eat maybe you could try the liquid version. They sell it otc at walmart and some drug stores. I know it is not as good as eating a good healthy meal but it can help with your low BG levels.
Best Wishes, get well soon!

Trudie this has been awful. I am actually hungry. I am so sick of soup, mashed potatoes and milkshakes. I tried eating a piece of chicken and was in excruciating pain. I made ice tea with real sugar to sip when I get low. That has helped a lot. It doesn't seem to be getting better. Doctor told me to see an ENT once the antibiotics are gone so I am making that call this morning.

Joyce; Have you ever tried juicing? When I had to have all my teeth pulled I couldn't eat so I bought a juice machine. I love it even still. There are all kinds of drinks you can make, fruits, veggies, or a combo of both. It couldn't hurt to try it until you are able to eat solids again.
Get Well Soon!!!! Please!

I want a juicer but I can't afford one at this time. We have to put a transmission in the truck because it is cheaper to replace it than to get a new one. That is on my list because I want to do that. I can blend veggie soup in the blender so I can drink them but it tastes funny. Back to the cream soups.

very sorry you have had this experience. I wish I had ideas, some of what I thought of has been mentioned like the mashed potatoes and right now, I just can't come up with anything else. Glad you are okay!

I'm so sorry to hear about the illness Joyce. 100% fruit juice, a smoothie made with yogurt and fruit (I often use frozen or canned fruit in smoothies), mashed potatoes and cream soups are some ideas. I hope you feel better soon! ~Lynn @Glucerna

Lynn I was so desperate for dinner this evening, I took a can of my sisters Spaghetti chopped it up real fine, added extra water and drank it. I also had a strawberry milkshake. This is the first time I have felt full this week.

Sorry to hear you are ailing. My go-to liquid food when I'm ill is chicken broth but that wouldn't help raise your BG. Ice cream comes to mind…(reminds me of when I was a kid and had my tonsils out…I got ice cream in the hospital.) Hope you're soon up and about and feeling well!

Thanks. I am up and about I just can't eat right. Everything i have is no sugar or no sugar added including the ice cream. I am going to pick up some real pudding that will help.

Sorry to hear that you're not feeling well. Hopefully, it won't last very long.
I'm wondering what caused an infected lymph node?

I haven't experienced not being able to eat properly. My problem with food has to do with finding it difficult to stop eating! But seriously, and under the circumstances that you are experiencing, I would definitely do as you already did, get my bg up to normal. Hi carb liquids in small quantities, and check your bg every 15 min or so to see how it's doing. Suck on a hard candy if you can. As for food, get out the old food processor, and that should make any veges, fruits and some other foods easier to consume.
Most importantly, feel better soon!

I asked the doctor and he said it could have been the cold I had. Instead of getting a respiratory infection it settled in my lymph node. It can also come from bacteria getting in a small cut in the skin. I have had a few small cuts from cutting sheets of copper into earrings. I am now wearing gloves.

I told everyone they better get to the grocery store before I get well because once I am well, I am going to probably eat everything in site.

That's a new one for me. Never heard anything like that before. You're not to far away, so I'll stock up on groceries, just in case you stop by the area, and decide to raid the grocery store.

Hope you're feeling better by now!

Where are you? Feel great but still can't eat solid food. Dinner tonight is mashed red skinned potatoes and gravy. Breakfast was a Chocolate Milk Shake. I am no longer feeling hungry.

I'm sitting on that chair in your yard reading a book! Don't worry, if that nasty neighbor comes by, I'll give him a full round house. LOL
Actually, i'm in NC right on the coast. So don't bother looking in your yard.

A chocolate shake sounds like it would be filling. Glad you're coming along! You had me worried when you mentioned lymph node.

All I heard was lymph node. Had to ask the doctor to repeat what he said.

I have never visited any city in NC. I have not been down that way in about 10 years and then I was on 95 all the way.

If you sit in my yard you have to play with Riley when I let him out. I have no neighbors beside me. The house they lived in was torn down when a neighbor with severe mental health problems set her house on fire and burned out 5 houses.
