coffee or tea
I have a questions as to which is better for you to drink, coffee with coffeemate creamer or teas that are flavored. I am a hugh coffee drinker and am wondering if I should change to drinking just teas.

Ever since I ahd my gall bladder removed I've been "blessed" with diarhhea that comes on unexpectedly with no warning, but not every day. When I travel I take gemfibrozil that binds bile salts to prevent embarrassment, but as these events occurr only about once or twice a month, I usually ride them out. I've determined that too much salt causes them, as well as too much fiber. But what is too much? Trial and error, so far, tells me that if I eat more than one serving of anything at an Asian restuarant I'll be in trouble. Brown rice, whole grains, all those good greens that we're supposed to eat… more than one serving at a time sets me off. That is why I disobey the primary meal plan for diabetics and eat more protein and cheeses. Fresh frits and vegeatbles bother me. Coffee and tea do not.
I had gallstones at 19 and had mine removed, I have bouts with diarrhea and constipation both, never knew it could be because of no gall bladder…something else to put on my list of questions lol
I have heard both ways. But for me and my wife it has never caused any diarrhea.
Question?
Can anyone tell me if diarrhea is a side effect that is normal by drinking green tea? I've heard its better for you but I've also heard (not on this site just out in the real world lol) that green tea causes diarrhea. Since Laura is restricted on what she can have to drink I didn't want to get her green tea if it was going to cause that issue for her, especially since she just started taking Metformin 2 days ago and has tummy trouble with it as it is.
I drink green tea and it doesn't cause problems for me.
I've not heard that, nor has it been a problem for me. Possible, I guess.
Hiya Robin. I can tell you from my mother's experience, green tea does not upset her stomach. She drinks a mug each night before bed and has no problems with an upset stomach. She swears it's a magic sleeping pill too? LOL, I've only had it during the day. I have Paulines's problem, no gall bladder. Everything including water bothers my stomach, so I'm no help! LOL Take care, Angie
Thanks, sounds like something we should give a try, both her and I. Its going on my shopping list lol
There is no reason to drink your coffee black. I use heavy cream. One tablespoon does the trick. Just be careful and make sure you heavy cream only has cream listed as an ingredient. Some brands actually add stuff to regular milk to make it behave like heavy cream!
I agree. Real coffee with real caffeine, with real cream if you have to add anything. None of those fake foods. Grind your own beans, too! A touch of Irish or Bourbon is good, too, once in awhile.
From the land of Starbucks…
Yikes!!!
I am actually getting away from cream and trying to go black coffee all the way. My struggles with this has been tough. But I am almost there and really starting to like plain black coffee…

I'm new to this site, but wanting to learn from others. I have either glucose intolerance or pre-diabetes. I had lap band surgery in Mexico in July 2008 and surgery to remove a malignant kidney tumor in September 2008. Right now I'm mostly able to keep liquids down. I'm finding that black coffee agrees with my system better than coffee with cream. My heritage is Swedish-German-English American; coffee I haven't been willing to give up, although I will drink decaf at times.
I know what you mean. I love coffee!! What I have done to make changes to fit my schedule, and it hasn't been easy. I had a kidney transplant , had to no consume caffeine, what caffeine keeps me going thru the day. Went to decaf, gagged everytime I took a sip. Do you think that made me give up coffe? Wrong..I stopped using artificial sweeteners little at a time and gagged even more till I got this tase even more, that took at least another 4 months,(LOL) but still continue to drink it. Now since the first of the year, trying to cut the cream, yuk!!! But guess what can't give up my coffee, but feel alot better…Debe
I love my coffee and anybody who doesn't drink it just the way I do isn't quite right. LOL
Tea. Black or herbal. Just found a new one from Tetley's-Ginger mint, lovely. Can't stand coffee, I don't or should I say didn't, even like
Coffee Crisp chocolate bars.
Just what is it that you don't like about coffee? For me it is one of the food groups. I can't imagine a day without coffee.
I love(decaf)coffee. I have recently stopped using artificial sweetners it took a while to get use to it, but I have, Now I am lowering my non-dairy creamer until I learn to drink it black, ugh!! Its aweful but I still drink it. I see not spikes in my BS any of the ways I drink it. I also like decafe tea, plain. Also no spikes in BS…Debe
I don't like the taste, even the smell of it puts me off.
I thought it was a food group too.
It is one of MY basic food groups, although I love tea (both hot and cold). I drink my coffee black, with 1 artificial sweetner, and it doesn't seem to effect my BS. I love regular tea and all the herbal teas. My grandmother made a hot tea drinker out of me when I was very small, and for many of my earlier adult years I drank that rather than coffee every morning. Then I got hooked on coffee! I would stay away from the most of the creamers, altho if that's the worst thing you do dietwise you should be in good shape.
Thanks to all that answered my question. I guess that I wasn't really thinking about the creamer being the problem but now I SEE THE LIGHT!!!!!!! Creamer is now out of the picture and I will have to learn to drink it black.
There is no reason to do away with creamer altogether as long as you use a low carb or no sugar added creamer and as long as you compensate for the extra carbs somewhere else in your diet. Actually most creamers used according to directions, i.e. serving size, really accounts for very few added carbohydrates.
I drink tea and coffee, but also do decaf (caffiene doesn't have a taste so stop making that face… lol) I switched about 7 years ago and gradually did half regular and half decaf to wean myself off. I now buy whole beans and grind them fresh every morning… It's the best tasting coffee in the world and it's decaf… I've had friends come over and they can't tell the difference… The days of Sanka as our grandparents drank for decaf are over!! lol If you need to put creamer in, buy the real deal and use a little bit. Coffee mate or anything processed is bad news. I drink mine without but if I did use cream, I'm buy organic whole milk or cream and use that. I'm an all natural person and the small amount that you would use wouldn't up the fat content in your diet that much. I guess that depends on how much cream you take with your coffee (or do you take a little coffee with your cream? lol) Anyway, natural is the best way to go as far as I'm concerned.

Both here, decaf, coffee black and iced tea not hot, no issues with either as far as my levels go, but I don't add anything to coffee and artificial sweetener to tea, the new truvia is pretty good and so is the stevia (both come from the same plant).
I drink 2-4 cups of regular coffee with truvia a day. I also drink crystal lite(or store brand of) and tea. I quit putting creamer in my coffee or tea
where are you getting your truvia, i looked in wal-mart and couldn't find it.
kroger
oh me! i have no kroger!
Check and see if you have any of these stores in your area they are all affilated. Ralph's,King Soopers, City Market,Smith's, Frys,QFC, Bakers, Owens,JC Food stores,Hilander,Scotts,Dillon's,Gerbes and Pay Less supermarkets. They should all carry just about the same things depending on the store size.
Publix has it too.
We have it at Giant Eagles, but I think any health food stores should carry it…Debe
i guess i will have to get it at the health fod store. thanks!
Judy,
I'm not trying to be funny or anything, but if I buy decaf beans and I use more of them than is called for, do I get the same amount of caffeine as if I were to use a regular bean in a weaker amount?
No if I'm understanding your question right, the beans themselves are decaffeinated so it doesn't matter how much you use. Most decaf coffee beans are 97% caffeine free. I make my coffee strong… trucker mud my mother calls it… LOL
Yup, you understood it right. Thank you for your response. You almost have me convinced to start drinking decaf. We grind our own beans as well and pretty much use 8 O'clock brand and have for 20 years or more.
I also use Eight O'Clock brand unless one of the gourmet coffee beans brands are on sale. Remember, if you are switching from regular to decaf do it gradually… Mix the two beans together for a while (a week or so) or you'll get the headache from 'H E double hockey sticks'… You have to wean yourself off of the caffeine bud!! Don't want your head to explode!! LOL
Good luck, you'll find that it tastes the same. For good decaf try the Eight O'clock 100% Columbian decaf… mmmm my favorite one!!

You are so right. Last Friday morning I woke up with a good old "decaf" headache from being unable to have any caffeine for the past 24+ hrs. Not pleasant. And I've never been able to distinguish between the taste of caffeinated or decaf. I probably should be drinking the decaf. I do buy diet soda that is decaffeinated all the time.
The best decaf coffee I have found is the Dunkin Donuts brand. It is pricey at 8 dollars a bag but you will taste the difference in the first cup.
I love their coffee anyway, altho not what I use on a regular basis. I'll have to try their decaf. Thanks for the tip.
Judy,
What does caffine do to us with diabetis? I drink caffiene. Should I change. I only have 2 cups a day and then ice tea.

My doctor told me to change because it would reduce kidney problems and blood vessel problems. I still got neuropathy but it could have been worse. Have been doing it for years. Decaf coffee and tea and I do not drink soda at all.
Anonymous, I don't understand. Why would your doctor tell you to stop the caffeine if it would reduce your problems?
I stopped drinking caffeine because of my low blood sugar issues. Caffeine makes it worse. I am decaffed now for years and I still get the lows but not as often.
Coffeemate is one of the worst creamers you can use. It has the highest fat content and calories of any of them. It can really effect your cholesterol and triglycerides in a bad way. It tastes the best I know, but with a little effort you can wean yourself off of it. I now use the stuff you can get in the black and white jars (generic). It's the cheapest and contains the least amount of the ingredients that make it bad for you. It also doesn't taste as good. I find that herbal teas such as chamomile with a stick of cinnamon don't need any cream or sugar. I think the answer to your original question is to reduce the amount of coffee as well as restrict the amount of fats you add to it. Tea can be bad for people with certain kidney problems. What does your doctor advise? I drink both.
I drink both with no spike in sugars. But my main thing is I drink decaf coffee and decaf tea. Was told when I became diabetic to change been doing it now for 15 years.
