I just had to tell you what I did to help relieve pain and get a decent nights sleep, finally.

Prior to what I just found, I was using the puffiest quilts I could find in my house, at least three. I would fold them in thirds, and make a matress, covering with a clean sheet, folded around them. Then I would put soft pillows underneath just enough to soften and edge up sides for my painful body parts. Then I would put pillows for head in a step positioning to help neck. By the time I got done, that was all I could do for one day. And as often as I change my sheets, it became exhausting, because I had to co-ordinate all this with my husbands sleep needs. UGGh, so Tired of this.

But then, after learning how comfortable a memory foam pillow was, I use for chairs couch, everywhere; I started to search memory form articles. Most of which were very expensive, but being persistent, went on ebay, and found reasonably priced 36"long by 14" wide, pillows. Then I ordered them at 15.00 a piece. I then used two bed shams, fused them together with iron on hem tape, 3 lengths, making it strong. Put pillows in, and put it on the bed, just below my head pillows. I threw a thin fleece throw over it, and wala, I just made the most comfortable matress I have ever had for $30 bucks, especially considering the pain I had to endure, and sleepless nights because of it.
Well, I woke up so happy, I had to tell you

I love memory foam. I used to sell it at La-z-boy, in some of our recliners. I always wondered if the toppers would work, so now I just might have to give it a try. One questions though, is it HOT? My husband needs something to eliviate his pressure points, but I get really hot on most things.

Not at all, and I keep a cool cotton sheet on, anyway. If I need flannel, I use the top sheet so I can pull to side easily.
I sleep with two fans, ever since I was a kid, because I always got hot. All year round, still do, but memory foam has not made any difference, It may actually feel a little cooler.

Also, I air the sheets about an out before bed, because I like cool, clean, and fresh sheets.

Thanks, I will check into that. I sweat like a piggy when I sleep, and now our fan is not working so no air...bummer. LOL

We couldn't afford the memory foam mattress either, so a couple years ago we went to a rent-a-center and got a brand new queen set and made weekly payments, in the long run we could have bought 3 for what we paid in interest and such for the 1 but it was so worth it in my opinion and my husband loves it too, about Thanksgiving this year my mother sent us a 6in thick feather bed topper, she'd gotten it and decided she didn't care for it, well we did put it on top of our mattress and omg it was even softer than before. I must tell you though, we moved to our new house about a 500mile drive the 23rd of Dec, we purposely packed the mattress' last in the truck so they were first off the truck, well, we unloaded at 9pm or so and set up the box springs and mattress on the floor for the night too tired to put the whole bed together, lmao when we went to bed (no feather topper on that night), the memory foam was rock hard, seems it doesn't necessarily freeze since it wasn't wet but it did get solid as a rock, then slowly after laying still for a bit it would warm back up here and there, but i never knew that stuff could harden like that because of the cold weather lol

I definitely would make some for people, if they pay for supplies and shipping, now problem.
Patten is not hard, I already got a copywrite for my book. Any one really interested, email me at small; If I get 6=10 people I think the site I bought them on gives a discount in quantity; anyway, either way. Happy to do it,

I bought a 3" memory foam mattress topper from last year for 120$.(kingsize) It came with 2 pillows also. I just love it. It has turned my old bed into a whole new bed. My mother gave me a temperpedic pillow about a month ago and this is the way to sleep. Granted temperpedic is very expensive(175$ for the pillow she gave) but if you can afford it I say get it. My mom has a temperpedic bed and after I got a chance to sleep on it for a night I was sold. I purchased a kingsize temperpedic last week. It was very costly(3000$) but for someone with chronic back pain being able to sleep pain free is priceless. I am breathlessly awaiting it's arrival.

oh my! come on income tax return!

sexyswamprat 2009-01-31 20:37:59 -0600 Report

You can get a full size temperpedic for about 1600. Mine was so expensive because I got the frame and headboard. Well, that, and I also got a kingsize. But if you can't afford that I suggest for a mattress topper. They have some really nice ones and shipping is only 2.95.

highlandcitygirl 2009-01-31 22:16:48 -0600 Report

oh! thanks! i have a nice king size bed. the topper would be great on it! not only that, i can fix me up some of them there pillows too!

I have to say, to have the whole memory foam matress is a great idea, but the reason I suggested what I did, and how I put it together, was for severe leg and back pain.

In doing so; it sort of looks like a futon; I can prop my painful back against it in any position, and take pressure off it.

I can raise my legs, on sides.

I had a memory form for my double bed, but now I have a queen, and it was awkward being 7" short all around.

highlandcitygirl 2009-01-31 10:56:45 -0600 Report

thanks, i am going to find me some of that memory foam. maybe i can get a good nights sleep!

You Go Girl; this particul pillow is 6 inches thick, which is really cheap for 15.00; I thought it would not be as good as the comparable 90.00 for one this size; I was so wrong.

Unfortunately, we could not afford a full matress right now, especially with that thickness.
You Go Girl, and get you one so you can get sleep too.
Friends. Claudia

Sleeping on a memory foam mattress is also wonderful. We got just the topper for the queen size bed for 120. It was a life saver. It molds to your body and takes away the pressure points. And your side does not conflict with your husband's side. It saves a marriage. LOL
