I already take 10mg glipizide twice a day 1k mg of metformin twice a day

We have now decided to add NPH insulin at night since my day #s are good but my night time I guess I am eating too many carbs. Its not something I have been able to change Because my job is stressful and to be honest when I get home I just get high and want to eat. Weed is legal in Washington before anyone responds negatively and its something I don't plan on stopping either.

I am happy with the decision, I'm not scared of insulin as I used to do my dads injections for him and so on.

Plus anything that helps is a good thing right :)

I have kaiser so I am just wondering how much $ do any of you typically spend on insulin ?
That could possibly be a deal breaker as I'm already stretched pretty thin with having to buy all my meds and doctor visits and so forth.

I got lucky guys- my kaiser covers all but $10 bucks for the insulin and 10 for the needles.

Ugh never mind that's just for 1 vial. Its $10 copay per vial and it looks like I'll need 3 vials a month.

I think being scared of insulin could be a good thing if you have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is insulin resistant. If you are not that far along you most likely have the ability to make your body work for you. Insulin was the wake up call I needed and now I am down 60 lbs and my a1c has been in the low 5s for the last year.

im not scared of the insulin, i think realistically this is something i need because although I have made a lot of diet changes and ive got my day time number's under control, i just need some extra help. I'll be taking a low dose to start with, just 10ml at night and then I will continue working with my diabetic case manager to make sure I am on the right dosage.

I'm not saying you are scared of the insulin. I'm saying that in my humble opinion you should be scared of insulin. If you are producing insulin then you should do everything you can to delay or not ever have to take insulin. Type 2 diabetes is insulin resistant not insulin dependent. James has said this before and I agree with him that you should get tested to see if you produce insulin. If you do then you just need to take even better care of yourself. I'm not trying to insult you at all, but you not only have to think short term, you need to think long term.

I use a Novalin insulin and get it at Sams for $25 a vial. Its a long lasting insulin and I take it every 12 hours. I don't have insurance yet, so I don't know if it's covered.

That is what I worried about too. If I bought the insulin from my regular pharmacy, it was $75 a bottle. So Sam's is where I buy it. There are so many out there, there is no telling. Have you talked to your pharmacist about it?

I'd consider giving up the smoke. As a long time 'toker' (started in 1970) I realized that once I was making a concerted effort to drastically improve my health that the weed was counterproductive. Many benefits but the loss of self control when it came to food was the deal breaker.
I quit cold turkey after smoking daily for virtually all of my adult life, so I know it can be done.
Just some advice from an old hippie …

Howdy Rainsoul

I have been on Kaiser for a while about 4 yrs ago and found them to be excellent. It has been so long since (3+ yrs) I have been on NPH I don't rightly remember what my copay was (it's probably risen since then as well).

There is another consideration I would want to bring to your attention: Insulin can put fat on your body. That can happen especially when you have more glucose in your blood than you currently have need for and the insulin unlocks the fat cells to "store" the glucose "for later use". Only it doesn't get used later and the fat builds up.

I had that problem when I was on insulin. I had always been a bit heavy, but it seemed grow on me after I started NPH insulin. Eventually I packed on 250 + lbs on a 5' 6" frame, That works out to a BMI of 40.3. It was not a pretty or a healthy sight.

And just because pot is legal in your state, doesn't mean that it is the BEST way for you to relax after a hard day.

Plus you are stretched thin financially you say, How much does it cost you per week or month to smoke that stuff? I could also quote studies which claim that the smoke from weed is worse than tobacco. More carcinogens (and one holds it in longer too).

I pray you find a good solution for your problem

James

And BTW there was a time when alcohol was illegal. Its legal now, does that mean its safer? No it just means that so many people couldn't control themselves that they had to make it legal cuz everyone was drinking it.

yep the common retort of those who smoke weed. Neither are good when it goes too far.

Agreed. I smoke and stay home. I don't smoke and drive. You never hear of anyone getting high and then beating their wife.. Unlike alcohol.

I am not debating which poison is best james. I don't think its right or fair to say weed is bad but cigarettes and alcohol is ok when far many more deaths are caused by those 2 than weed altogether.

Its hypocritical.

I'm not worried the weight issue, im starting up an exercise regimen with my roommate.

I pray you can stay ahead of the weight build up. Not saying not to do it, I was just warning about the side effects of the insulin together with the extra carbs.

BTW I didn't see your figures on how much the legal weed costs per week or month. LoL!

Ok I spend $40 a month on weed. Your point? This is what I was trying to avoid, someone who wants to act like a troll.

believe me I am not a troll. We just have a difference of opinion. I have no interest in giving you grief over our difference of opinion, like a troll would.

I had no idea as to the cost of the weed. You experessed a concern above re the cost of insulin that it might be a deal breaker. that was why I asked.
