So, Do You Like To Dance?

Do you love the TV show So You Think You Can Dance? We do too! What those dancers do is really amazing, but did you know that a Dance Out Diabetes study presented at the 2013 American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions showed that a dance exercise program can be an effective way for people with diabetes to lower blood sugar and lose weight? It’s true!

Often when we hear the word “exercise” we automatically turn the other way. But famed dancer, choreographer, and actress Debbie Allen is encouraging you to pause before you make that turn and consider dancing as a fun form of exercise!

There’s now an exciting new dance exercise program called the T2 Dance Crew that’s sending real So You Think You Can Dance alumni dancers out to community centers across the country to teach and inspire people with type 2 diabetes to use dance as a great way to help manage diabetes. Isn’t that cool?

You can learn more about it right here on Diabetic Connect. Visit this page to learn more from Debbie Allen and to view free dance exercise videos:

I used to love to dance. I started out at age 16 with the twist, the stroll, the jerk, the monkey, & the bump. I never could keep to the routine though. Music just seemed to go through me and I just moved with the beat. I did win a couple of dance contest back then. My husband doesn't dance so after I met him I just kinda quit except for when I'm at home alone sometimes and the music just starts to flow through me.

Rachel, thanks for this. I felt handicapped all through high school because
I didn't know how to dance. Now I can, not the choreography type, but others,
like swing, polka, waltz, and some stuff we made up. It IS good exercise and
can heal lots of ills. I hate polka & waltz music but the dancing is fun & good
for us. (I prefer blues, swing & country). No matter, … any type of exercise is a healer for mind & body. Tony5657 in 85 degree New Braunfels, TX

Tony I learned to waltz in elementary school. I love Classical Music and hate Polka. I love Blues and Swing. I can live without Country. Unlike today you can go to You Tube and learn how to dance, we hung out with the kids who knew the latest dances so we could learn the steps. Dancing is fun.

James, you're one bad dude. LOL I was just trying to say that dancing is GOOD exercise, NOT that I'm great at it. I have lots to learn and am still learning. When we stop learning, we might as well give up and croak (die).

I love to dance! I love watching that show, and I also love to watch Dancing with the Stars. I love all kinds of dance and I help maintain my weight by this exercise, incorporating it into some other low impact aerobic routines. I'm glad I heard about the T2 Dance Crew. will have to look them up.

I dance. I always have. People tell me to calm down and sit down, and I ignore them. That and walking are keeping me moving, but not helping with the weight, though.

I love disco too!! I was not yet a teen when the craze was at it's most popular and I loved it so much, I wanted to be old enough to go to the clubs and dance!! I still love most of that old music and still have many of my old vinyl albums and 45s!

Tabby, we were telling our younger cousins that we wrote the book on clubbing and partying. They are in their 20's and think they know all there is to know about partying. When we were their age, we rolled hard and we rolled deep. The weekend started Friday at 4:30 when we got off of work and ended Monday morning at 6:00 pm when we went home showered and changed for work.

I have 2 boxes of 45's, over 300 vinyl albums, a box of the old slate 78's a few 8 tracks. My sister and I started replacing our albums with CD's so we have bought about 700 CD's because we still collect music. Our collection starts with Fred Astaire and ends with ZZ Top. Do you remember when they came out with what was called Disco 45's they were the size of an album and had one song on each side. I have a lot of those. Loved Disco.

I can't open the video it says it isn't there. At any rate dancing is a lot of fun and a great way to lose weight.

I love to dance. I'm not good at it. Ironically, I won a dance contest for the only dance I'm decent at, the twist. Another time my back went out on me in Reno. I stayed in bed but to please an unhappy wife I agreed to take a short walk. During the walk we came across a twist contest that just ended. As we sat watching the after dance. Shout played and I gave it a try. They kept playing tunes and everyone watched us. When it ended the winning couple asked us if we were professionals. By the way felt great the rest of the weekend.

Robeto, you don't have to be good at it as long as you can keep up with the beat and if you won a dance contest you were good at it. I am glad you won and had fun doing it.

Actually it's more fun to be awful. Not only do you get great exercise but you have funny memories for a lifetime. After all laughter is the best medicine.

This is why so many people enjoy zumba. I watched the introduction video and it sounds like a great out reach. Is this going to be part of our fitness challenge?

Gabby the organization where I worked wanted to have Zumba classes for the employees after work. So they had a woman come in to give us a free trial and if we liked it they would hire her. It was like watching a train wreck. She put the music on and was trying to teach us some moves only she had no rhythm to speak of. All of us ladies and two of the guys grew up dancing so we ended up teaching her how to move to the beat of the music. Someone went to their car and brought back a line dance CD and we also taught her how to do the Booty Call. We had a lot of fun together and we did not hire her. We never got a Zumba instructor but twice a week, we would get together and dance for an hour. I don't know if anyone lost any weight but it was a lot of fun and relaxing time together.

I am very uncoordinated and dance has never been my thing. It really intimidates me. But I guess if I am alone in my room, no one has to know. LOL

I LOVE to dance and tried to do it whenever I could. Unfortunately the last time I tried it I tired so easily (barely made it through the first set) and my lack of balance sidelined me, permanently, I am afraid.

Would love to particapate but it seems to me out of the question.

Praying good fortune on those who do participate!

I only dance at home with the use of a cane for the same reason. I can't even finish a dance. I dance a little then rest. After doing this four or five times I'm done.

I have a ways to go till I get where you're at. I love to dance so much and i used to be so good at it that it actually causes me emotional grief to not be able to dance. And my new lady liked to dance also but since she is confined to a wheelchair really doesn't like to even think about dancing anymore. And for me. I really didn't think that dancing solo was the way to go. Had to have a partner to do it properly.

I used to be a runner. I haven't been able to run for decades. When I see someone run I smile, remember how wonderful it used to feel and be happy for them. I don't dwell on the past but I respond to stimuli that prompts a pleasure response.
