How does everyone deal with taking antibiotics and diabetes? Antibiotics seem to raise my blood sugars severely. Like to see if antibiotics effect other diabetics the same way…

I've been on antibiotics 6 times in the last 5 months, not included the bags of them they fed me in the hospital. I'm currently taking 2000mg of penicillin a day for the next week and I'm not noticing a rise in my levels at all. Infections don't seem to make mine go up either, maybe after the last 5 months my body is just used to having infections… that's scary in itself..

I was on one of those new antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection and my doctor warned me that my sugar readings might go up a little, but as long as I was anticipating the rise it wasn't a real concern. In actuality they were running higher than normal because of the infection anyway and the medication really didn't effect my sugar.

Debe, the only time I've had antibiotis since being diagnosed was in the hospital. I'm sure they put some extra medicine in my IV to control my BS. I have got to have some dental work done and I would love to know the answer to this. I don't know and am nervous about taking oral medications after the dental procedure… Thanks much, Angie

Oh crap. I guess it would have helped if I told my dentist I was diabetic, huh? How stupid on my part… Geez

I think one of the main reasons behind this is because of if they would nick your gums infection could set in. I think my dose is now higher dued to my transplant. But I always remember taking an antibiotic before going. Check it out before your next visit…Debe

Thank you, I am scheduled to go in tomorrow for a root canal. I am calling him when he opens to see if he will call in something for me to take before I go. Thanks again :)

I get to have a root canal next Tuesday… fun stuff huh? I have an infection between the roots of my tooth that is visible on the xray and the dentist said that where the infection is he feels it came from inside… so that means the darn infections from my surgery are still running around in there.. Now it's in my tooth… grrrrrrrrrrr Antibiotics again!!! sigh
