Yes, you really do have to be extremely careful about taking anything. I have a brother and sister-in-law who have both had transplants, and I know how many meds you have to be on and how your resistence and immune system is compromised, etc. I till say it's just always best to check anything new with the doctor first.

My endo says that it takes seven days to
get rid of a cold without medication and
seven days if you take medication, not to mention the fact that most meds have some sort of side effect. He does approve of mucinex IF there's a lot of mucus involved and he encourages a saline wash for my sinuses and nose when my breathing becomes difficult.
He also says that buying cold medicine just for diabetics isn't necessary. If
a person takes the regular medicine as required there's not enough sugar to cause problems. He just doesn't encourage taking any medication for something that will take care of itself.

I understand that these meds are not going to get rid of the cold, but most of us need something to make it bearable…to allow us to sleep, etc. Ridiculous that they can't come up with something to cure the common cold, when they've made so much headway in much more serious health problems. Oh, well. Maybe one day. The doctor's comments about not bothering to take only sugar-free meds is very interesting. He's probably right, but why chance it.

CutiePie2 2009-01-20 20:11:13 -0600 Report

I agree with LadyDi. Why take the chance. I have a weak point and it is my lungs. When I get a cold I don't want it to go down to my lung which happens to me. That is why I have to take something.

that is what is called a seven bean cold. the doctor told me to put seven beans in my pocket, take one out every day,at the end of the seventh day the cold would be gone and that was the way it was cured! if it lasted more than seven days go to the hospital, because you are sick with something else! anyway that is what he told me!

What do you do if your nose is running, put a bean in each nostril? (LOL)

I have to have something to stop the coughing and help me breath when I get sick with a cold, which, thankfully, is not often.

LadyDi, That is to funny. I was sitting at work reading this. I started to laugh at me desk.
I needed that today.

When you have COPD it is best to use everything you can to not let a cold have a chance of leading to bronchitis or pneumonia. Even though we know we treat the symptoms and not the virus, it does make things more comfortable. Plus like LadyDi said it makes it easier to sleep without having to use beans. Would olives work?

I use Diabetic Tussin. It's 2 pills every 4 hours as needed. It's for mucus relief and chest congestion. It's sorbitol, fructose, sugar, sodium and dye free. Says it's safe for all diabetics. I have seen it at Overstock Drugs but I found this at Winn Dixie, lol. About $7.00 for 50 tablets. Works great for me! Feel better, Angie

This was something I never thought about before (cold medicine having sugar in it). I would just buy something over the counter. However, the last time I started getting sick, I did call my dr and she prescribed an antibiotic plus told me to use Museinex for the congestion.

Avera 2009-01-17 00:03:51 -0600 Report

We all know that before taking any over the counter meds, we should first check with our doctors. You have received some excellent answers to your discussion post already. I can only tell you what I use with my doctors permission.

It has been clinically proven COLD-EEZE helps to shorten the life of your cold. IT WORKS FOR ME.

Here is what the box says it does and so far it does these things for me.

"Cold-EEZE reduces the duration and symptoms of the common cold including cough, stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing, post-nasal drip and hoarseness."

They come in regular and sugar free. I take the sugar free. Sugar Free Cold-EEZE tablets contain 0 g of carbohydrates and 0 calories.

Here is the web site if you want to know more, but remember to ask your doctor before you try it.

I don't know that I have an answer,as to what cold medicine to take. But be careful to read all the information on the box, I recently had a head cold, and took a day+ night time cold remedy,I didn't read all the warnings, my sinuses were so bad it hurt to open my eyes, But the reaction I had was much worse than the cold.I was so tired but couldn't sleep all I did is twitch, lay down, get up,it lasted 3 day's, Then I crashed, Anyway I discovered that 2 Medications I take Cann't be taken with most cold remidies. So Please read all the information before taking something, and hope yoy get better soon. Robert

There is no known cure for a cold so you are really only taking something for symptoms that you have along with the cold.
Sometimes that involves coughs and you have to be very careful that you don't take sugary or syrupy meds.
My advice would be to check labels and do not take anything with glucose or sugar.
There seems to be complications with all meds so you have to check out the labels and also what it does to your body.
What works for me might be harmful to you…so use caution.

Get better soon.

I can sympathize with you. I have been on crutches now for two weeks because of arthritis in my knee. Finally had to get an injection in it on Wednesday so hopefully I will be able to walk again soon.
I didn't enjoy my long rest…got tired of sitting and laying…imagine getting tired of resting…but you do.
I don't work out of the house but my housework is getting behind and I hate it. All I can think of is the tons of cleaning; washing; etc I will have to do when I can move around…ugh. Haha.

CutiePie2 2009-01-16 11:42:46 -0600 Report

Wise to look for those that indicate they are "sugar free". I have used store brand (Walgreens and Kroger) items that are sugar-free. Find they work very well. You might want to ask your pharmacist to recommend something, based on your diabetes and any other medications you're currently taking. Feel better soon!

CutiePie2 2009-01-16 11:14:40 -0600 Report

Thank you I will look into that. I am home today from work my cold is going to set in my lungs. I was up all night coughing.
