I have fallen off the wagon and now I need to get back on! I am publicly announcing that I will lose 8 pounds before Easter. OK no big deal, we get complacent and into a relaxed groove where our meds are working and our numbers are OK. But once you realize you are not focused on keeping your diabetes in check it is time to find a way to get motivated. So here I am Red Sox Rich telling you that I am about to get back on the bike, lower the carbs ,get outside no matter what the weather is and stay off the couch (until the Red Sox game starts). Anyone else need to do the same?? Jump on board and we can do this together ! !

So it looks like I expected too much too soon. Turns out my A1C and blood work came back fine. I went from 7.2 in November to 6.1 in January to today where I am down to 5.9! I need to thank my great friend Ellen who is always there for me and my best Diabetic-buddy ! Progress is a good thing but don't be too hard on yourself where you run the risk of giving up. Now that I am heading in the right direction my next goal will be smaller and attainable ! Stay Well ! !

I would love to have great news about my public statement but I am ashamed to say I failed. I used to be strong and have will power but not now. Sorry to all who encouraged me.

come on buddy … as a Red Sox fan I know you have experienced a lot of the heart break of defeat … but it really ain't over 'til the fat lady sings … so put on your big boy pants and start again … I know you can do this!

Red-Sox-Rich 2014-04-06 19:31:48 -0500 Report

Well the first week is almost over and I did pretty well. I saved my carbs for dinner with a great friend and even had a glass of wine. With the weather finally improving I was able to do more outside activities instead of the bike. My Friday was spent both on the floor playing with my Grand Daughter and a nice walk, Week 2 will be a breeze, I can feel it !

Geez Rich, with all these people watching you, you have to do it or you will be too embarrassed to show your face on here. My boss had his wife take pictures of him in his boxers. He posted these on the cabinets where food was. He lost 70 pounds in a year!

Red-Sox-Rich 2014-04-03 18:20:56 -0500 Report

Still going strong! Instead of hitting the bike, I hit the yard and garage ! Walked my yard (1 acre) picked up sticks, moved stuff around the garage and put my new tool box together. Tomorrow is babysitting an active girl so that counts, right?? Things are getting better! :)

JaredLahti 2014-04-03 21:24:05 -0500 Report

Nice job! I did two hours on the bike today. I have to be able to ride 4 to 5 hours by the middle of September.

Glucerna 2014-04-04 12:48:50 -0500 Report

Yard work definitely counts as exercise and keeping up with an active girl today is going to keep you moving. Jared are you riding in a specific event in September? ~Lynn @Glucerna

Day two was pretty good. Ate well and did my biking. Good weather this weekend will help get rid of the Winter Blues!

Day three, I hit the wall. Super stressed at work but guess what… no excuses ! !! I worked through it, didn't use food to deal with the stress and still came home and exercised. I pushed through it and now I get to watch the Red Sox!! Finally finding my happy place ! ;)

Congratulations for hitting the wall and then getting over that wall! What helped you keep going and not fall back on excuses? ~Lynn @Glucerna

Red-Sox-Rich 2014-04-02 19:29:10 -0500 Report

Well Lynn, my main reason has been my grand daughter , Alex. She is my life and I need to be around for her.
But I also need to set an example for Alex. I would not accept it if she was the one to give up (in the future, she is only 20 months).
Will she have to hear that her Papi could have been around for her recitals and ball games if he only stopped making excuses about his diabetes and took care of himself?
I would like to hear how others have dealt with this subject.
Thank you Lynn for helping me pause and think about the situation. Rich

I've been down that road before. I'm only 35 and I was diagnosed with type 2 at 29. I took it seriously for the first year and got everything in order. I slipped a bit and was having a little bit too much fun and my other disorder decided to rear it's ugly head. I had an epileptic seizure at work, which started a four year battle to get everything under control again.
I got complacent over that time and my a1c got all the way up to like 13 and a temporary doctor put me on insulin. At first I got really pissed off and started eating even worse cause the insulin kept my blood sugar low but then it started climbing and I finally realized I had to change both my diet and exercise if I wanted to get off the meds.
In February of 2013 I weighed 212 lbs. and now I am down to 154 lbs. I work out like a beast because I enjoy it. I also changed the way I eat. I have cereal and yogurt for breakfast. I have a sandwich, string cheese, fruit and a fiber one bar for lunch. I have carrots and fruit for afternoon snacks. I eat a salad, a carb and protein for dinner. I allow myself to have desert every once in awhile.
I don't allow for excuses anymore cause I don't like convulsing from seizures.

Thanks to each of you for sharing your motivation to take control of your life and eliminate excuses. I know each of you are encouraging others to realize that they also can make these types of changes. ~Lynn @Glucerna

I am committed to being on the recliner from April 14 until about Easter. They say I will be so drugged up from surgery I won't be able to function. I wish you the best. I will join you once I am recovered. No bike, but walking the hills here at camp. These are the kind they say are uphill both ways. Jim

Jim Edwards 2014-04-03 17:21:18 -0500 Report

Thanks. The big difference between then and now is that I know any episode is not going to last forever and that the episode won't kill me as long as I know it won't last. It is really strange and hard to explain to some folks that you can be in a depression even when everything is going right! It is enough to make me start drinking (hey, I come from an Irish Catholic family) Thank goodness I do about 6 beers a year and about 2 liters of brandy. Most of the brandy is for medicinal purposes.

Wtg Rich. I always say you can motivate yourself. Wish I could join you but the sofa is calling my name. First pitch is 3:05, temp is 50, visibility is 10miles and winds are NNW 15 mph with gusts of 26mph. Game is sold out and the Baltimore Orioles are gonna beat the Boston Redsox. Sorry I am a Baltimore girl and gotta support my team. I do wish the Redsox a little luck :>)

I have had lots of support of people here on DC that actually helped me get motivated. I am so glad you are able to motivate yourself. I seem to have a way to talk myself out of things. But no more excuses ! There have been replies of others that may have been motivated by my (and other members) post and that is great !! Oh and … good call Joyce your Orioles win!!

Thanks. I saw the first pitch and my neighbor knocked on my door. She lost her brother yesterday. He died before he could get a liver transplant. His cancer returned after 10 years. I went back in and my phone started ringing everybody decided they needed to talk to me today. I went back out and heard the 7th inning stretch. I can hear it from my house if it is quiet out. I live not far from both stadiums. I can walk around the corner and up a block and can see the Ravens stadium. I won't see another game this season. I went into the Orioles Stadium for the first time last year. Beautiful. My sister and my dad went on a tour of it when it opened.

I motivate myself because I cannot sit still long enough to listen to a motivational speaker. They don't interest me and bore me to death. I prefer to motivate myself. I talk myself out of doing things if I am not interested in them. I talk myself into doing things then ask myself "Why in the world did I just do that?" Makes for a fun day sometimes.

Keep up the good work. Stay positive.

Rich when you decide to make the trip, try to come when there isn't something major going on. The stadium is walking distance to our beautiful Inner Harbor which isn't a tourist trap, you can catch one of our free buses to Fort McHenry, Little Italy and Harbor East which is very expensive and you can do a Harbor Tour and dinner cruise. You have to try our famous steamed crabs or a crab cake. We are a friendly city with lots of things to do. We have ethnic festivals all summer long.

Hi Red-Sox-Rich, thank you for the motivating start-up. I am waiting for my new shoes to arrive. The sole of my old shoes fell off. So I will start on Wednesday, April 2. I am wondering what you have found to be the best low carb product for you? I am having a hard time trying to get started with a changed diet. So let us know how you're doing and I will also. Bless You ;-)

Red-Sox-Rich 2014-03-31 17:10:39 -0500 Report

Good luck Starlyt.
I just got off my exercise bike. Seems like Mother Nature played a cruel joke and dumped 3 1/2 inches of spring snow around here! But I got up and moving! I am sure there will be debate, but for me replacing carbs (the bad processed kind like white flour, white rice, pasta, etc) with protein like chicken, fish, lean meat and eggs , a healthy salad and veggies, etc. Again food choices vary from person to person. Find what works for you. Check your monitor to see how your diet change is affected. Good Luck

Trudie I went out on cold days and walked a little faster. I hate winter weather but I will bundle up and go out for a walk as long as the temp is above freezing. I took a stroll this morning.

I can't be motivated by other people. I do my own motivation and I don't make excuses unless it is raining or too cold to be outside. The crisp fresh air clears the mind, body and soul.

Time for baseball. Exercise can wait. Got my snacks and fed the puppy. I always watch the first game of the season if I can. I can't sit and just watch baseball. I do support the team.

Just joyce, I don't really mind the cold weather to much even though it was below freezing a lot here, but I can't walk on snow and ice. No excuses, I have a steel plate and pins in my right leg and ankle so my balance doesn't co-operate on anything slicker than rain, and I have to be careful even then. I have had to learn to walk all over again since the accident and I am doing pretty good. I love to hike and walk outside, I just have to be careful and carry a big walking stick. It snowed and sleeted here so much that even my dog who is very agile was slipping, sliding down and busting his bottom, and he is only 1& 1/2 years old and was top of his agility class. Our last sleet and snow was just 2 weeks ago. I like camping, hiking, fishing, and gardening, and canoeing now that I am retired. I was a WAC and always loved physical exercise. I was and still am a big ole' tom boy.

I don't go out on sleet or ice and I am so sick of snow I could scream. We had snow mixed with rain yesterday. I hate hiking and I refuse to sleep outside. I can't stand bugs and worms. Snakes and lizards don't bother me.

I did plant a lot of flowers in post last spring and they were beautiful up until the first big frost. We use to go fishing and crabbing all the time. I love being on the water. I refuse to get into a canoe, row boat or kayak. I prefer cruise ships. My next venture is a helicopter ride. I was a tom boy to a point. I needed doll time as a kid…lol

LOL, We have a very nice camper so there are no bugs, worms, snakes, or lizards. Just air conditioning, heating, shower, full kitchen, tv and computer. That's the way I rough it camping. I do like cooking on the camp fire and dutch oven cooking.
My husband it taking me to see one of the local caves next week. I am looking forward to it. I hope you get to go on your next helicopter ride venture soon.

LOL my idea of a camper is a Carnival Cruise Ship or a nice hotel room. I went to Luray Caverns in Virginia and visited a cave in Hawaii. Loved them.

JaredLahti 2014-04-01 09:45:01 -0500 Report

Although I prefer disney to carnival. My wife and I took our daughters and they absolutely loved the cruise. We got to see Thor on the ship before it was in the theater. That's the advantage of owning the rights to those movies I guess.

Just Joyce 2014-04-01 09:54:04 -0500 Report

My first cruise was the Disney Cruise before they got the new ships. It was the worse cruise ever. The ship was a bucket of bolts. We had fun with the cruise director and the officers. The club was never crowded and the second night we were on the ship, we went in the club and the officers ordered a large tray of hors d'oeuvres and drinks. On the 3rd night they did the same thing. We invited the few people in the club to join us and they refused. By the 4th night they were with us. None of us have children and we thought the cruise would be fun. We love Disney World and Disneyland. We switched to Carnival for fantastic adult fun.

While my husband was in the hospital, I fell way out of control as driving to and from the hospital two times a day left me little time to do much...or really I was just too lazy to do much. I had recently lost about 15 pounds and gained some of it back. So I can use a partner in this.
