My son Alex had several migraines in the last few weeks-actually missed Christmas day. The first his blood was 50 something, the second time it was in the 80's. Has anyone experienced this?

Yes…still do…With me, the headaches were more frequent when i was in icu, and my sugars were being lowered..then when they got below 300..i had the headaches and blurry vision and shakes , most of these things were like lows.ow I get them when my numbers are consistently average..or at the "good-range" and steady. The longer my sugars are :"good" the more I feel like poking my eyes out!! (LOL)
The good news …I believe I will get better for you and yours!!

I was wondering if his blood pressure was ever checked. I think all diabetics at any age should have this done each MD visit. And don't ever let them say they don't think it needs to be done cause all you reports are good…Debe

I never thought about blood pressure, and they don't ususally check it. He did have a med check with his pediatrician though on Dec. 22 and nothing was mentioned. He is also on Concerta for ADHD and was taking clonodine, which he doesn't take anymore- could be one of these too.

I think every diabetic should have their blood pressure check at every visit. I would insist. Some times the overlook it because of younger ages. Well, I go to Joslin and I can't remember a time it was never check. I feel everyone should not leave a MD visit without knowing their pressure. I remember when I was also yound and my regular family MD told my mother they couldn't take my pressure because they didn't have a small enough blood pressure cuff. Well guess what on my 3 month return they had one…Debe

My little sister had migraine headaches when she was about 5-6 years of age and they couldn't find what was wrong because they tested her for everything from sizures to human insulin allergies. She grew out of them and it might be that way for your son. Sometimes her sugars were low other times they were normal. AS she got older she didn't get the headaches even when she was low. I have never had a headache based on blood sugars. Try to find out if this might just be the case with your son.

I've read that low blood sugars can produce horrendous headaches, and his readings that you've mentioned are low. If you're testing him, I presume he has been diagnosed as diabetic. Definitely consult his doctor. If he's on medication and/or insulin, an adjustment of some sort might be needed.

Very true. I am a new diabetic and my BS numbers had been running extremely low and I had terrible headaches. I went to the doctor yesterday and MY problem (he is 95% sure) is that I'm allergic to human insulin. He changed it to non-human and my reading this AM was 103, not my normal 40 to 50 in the AM. Please check with your doctor, I should have gone weeks ago. I wish you the best of luck, Angie

I am SO glad to hear this. I hope this solves your problem, as I was very concerned about your low readings. Great!

Thank you Lady! I was just emailing you! Yes, human insulin wasn't working. Thanks for all your advise. I feel soooo much better already!

I am allergic to human insulin. They found this out many, many years ago. I had to go to the OR for allergy testing for this as they keep injecting it in my arms tiny doses. I had an allergest MD and my Endo in their with me. The then put me on novo nordisk purified pork…

My neighbor has a son with Type 1. She had mentioned something to me recently about her son getting migranes because of low blood sugar.

After reading your discussion, I gave her a call and she sent me this link about it. Here it is. Hope it helps.

Thanks Avera- I'll look into the web site. The fifty I thought was low, but 80- I thought was pretty good. Guess what- he woke up today with a migraine- blood was 76. He slept until 11:30 and we both missed school. We are trying to tighten control, but maybe we should back off a little at night. He is eleven and uses the humulog pen and is growing, plays hockey, and wants to eat.

You are right about the 80. That's at the low-end of normal range but certainly shouldn't be causing horrendous headaches. You definitely need to be finding out more about what is going on.

Have you had him into the eye doctor? I know that eye-strain can definitely cause migraines.

Goes to an opthomologist every year and things look good. I always cringe when he records his message to his endo and pediatrician and says "no signs of retinopothy." Don't want to have to deal with any of that-yet. Ever!
