Does anyone know to get rid of the infusion set properly?

Dispose of the needle as you would with any other needles in a sharps container. The rest of the insuion set can be placed in the trash. ~Lynn @Glucerna

Lynn, the plastic cannula can it go into the trash or does it have to go into a sharps container?

The plastic cannula without the needle can go into the regular trash. It's the needle that needs to be disposed of safely. ~Lynn @Glucerna

Please consider what Lynn (Glucerna) wrote above and place the sharps in a sharps container. If you place the whole thing (including the sharp part) you could get sued by some garbage collector if they got stuck with the sharp. When i moved from my mobile home in CA, I got notified that someone who was employed by the mobile home park to clean out the mobile home for resale got stuck and the mobile home park contacted me for information on me and my late wife and her deceased mother (we all injected insulin) for our Dr's contact info to check out if we had any nasty infectious diseases. Fortunately never heard from them again on the issue,

Tossing the sharps in the trash is taking a BIG risk in this litigious society.

So I recommend putting the sharps in a container approved by your local authorities and disposed in the way they suggest. You can find your state's regulations here ~ But note that some states (like CA) have county or local requirements to follow. There should be a link in the state's site which will tell you about those.
