Hello, Diabetic Connect and welcome to another Fill in the Blank Friday! It's been another great week here at Diabetic Connect. Last week's discussion about making changes to eating habits was fun and insightful. Of course there was the expected list of things diabetes may make off limits: OJ, pancakes, ice cream, pizza. But there were also a number of you who pointed out what a challenge portion control is.

If you missed the discussion, here's the link:

As for this week, it seemed appropriate to get some thoughts about exercise and physical activity. I have learned over the years that almost all of us know that more physical activity would be good for us (marathoners, tri-athletes, etc, excluded of course). So let's talk about some of the changes needed to make that happen. So for this week's FITBF, please complete this statement:

I would be more physically active if …

I would be more active if there were more hours in the day. I feel like I get to the end of each day and wonder where all my time went. I need to be better at planning in time specifically for exercise, otherwise it just doesn't happen. However, I do have two small children and that does keep me moving throughout the day so I guess that is better than nothing. But I could definitely put in a little more effort in that area of my diabetes care.

I agree with you nzingha I wasn't being lazy the past few months either. I haven't been able to get out of the house much due to the horrible weather but I have kept busy in my home. I will be glad when the weather clears up so I can walk and do stuff outside again.

jigsaw 2014-03-02 19:24:40 -0600 Report

If I was 20 years younger, or was less lazy! Age has become my excuse. I do exercise every day, but I still believe it's not enough.

I didn't hurt so bad from my arthritis and fibro. Trying to find something that you can do without making it impossible for you to move later that day and/or the next day (or two) is very difficult at times. Then add in weather…

I would be more physically active if I did not spend as much time as I do in front of my computer.

JaredLahti 2014-03-02 15:45:15 -0600 Report

U could get a balance ball. That way u r exercising while using the computer. Kill 2 birds with one stone.

I have Charcot foot on my left. Was told to avoid walking as much as possible. Also have frozen shoulder in the left arm. Pain galore from both when I try any physical activity

If it was not 40 below outside windchill, it gets boring at times exercising inside all the time, So please spring come our way:)

I am praying for global warming, but it's not working.
It has been the same temp here in Wisconsin as what you have where\ you are. A very frigid winter.

I think the weatherman on my local weather station said that all this bad weather is caused by global warming. So I'm just praying for Spring to hurry up and spring. I think it is weird and hard to realize that warming causes freezing but from all my research that's what they say is happening.

IronOre 2014-03-06 13:34:26 -0600 Report

I think the weatherman at your local station has been smoking some hookey!
I have heard too that this cold is caused by warming, but it makes no sense to me.

If I enjoyed it. I like passive activity like hiking and gardening, but I don't like the sports and things like that. It takes great effort to get me to do those kinds of things.

I take a 40+ minute bike ride four times a week. I don't use a car and use public transit or walk instead. Even cleaning house or working in the garden counts as exercise.

Trudie Ann
Trudie Ann 2014-03-06 13:07:19 -0600 Report

I used to do that way back when I lived in Seattle, but I haven't lived any where since that they have public transit system. My neighbor said I should check out the Senior Center here because they have a van that will take you to places for a small fee.

I would be more physically active if…I wouldn't keep going walking. Cause I would never be home. It takes a lot of time to get in the swing of a good walk. Just I get further away from my home, and no place to rest(LOL,LOL,LOL)

Me too, I totally dislike this weather. The weather channel here said it is caused by global warming? I'm no weather expert, and I know they are probably right but it sounded weird to hear that warming causes freezing.

Thank you for the suggestion Just Joyce, I did the research on global warming when the weather channel said that, I also watched that movie ( oh what was the name, something like The Day After Tomorrow ). But I still think it's weird. LOL Oops, it's not really funny at all, just weird. Again thank you.

I would be more physically active if I was younger, and was not having knee replacement surgeries. HA! I do my physical therapy exercises, and go to the gym to do mostly upper body exercises. It is just a matter of time, and everything will be back to normal. Nice warm weather will make everything seem so much better. I cannot wait to get out and walk where there is no snow, ice, and very cold weather!!!

My sister-in-law had the knee replacement and she is so happy. She say's it the best thing she ever did, and it's hard to believe she had put it off so long. She say's she is able to do so many thins she wasn't able to before, including climbing the stairs to clean her guest room.

If I did not have seizures that fatigue me out so much. I have all ways been active till back surgery and now seizures.

JaredLahti 2014-02-28 19:14:09 -0600 Report

Man I feel you on the seizures. I have epilepsy and know that those seizures take a lot out of you. I know for myself that staying active and keeping my weight in control is one of the best things I can do to control the seizures. Also taking my medication every single day of course.

Ralph 2014-02-28 19:30:12 -0600 Report

I went through three years of testing to find out what was wrong with me. in the end they found four different types of seizures. They tried different types of meds. Nothing worked, so they told me to just stay away from stressors. When I have an attack it acts like a stroke and scared most people. I have been to the hospital several times and they still find nothing. Dr. said just go home and go to a dark and quiet place of the house and sleep till I feel better. This can take from one to three days. After I feel better I work out at the YMCA, play golf, go fishing, hiking and yard work. So on good days I live normal, on bad days I sleep.

If it was SPRING!
I don't like the cold, my Asthma does not like the cold and I'm afraid of falling and breaking a bone.
So come on Winter give it up for Spring, I want to walk out in the fresh air again!

JaredLahti 2014-02-28 15:59:39 -0600 Report

I will be fitting more in as I am going to work towards doing a half ironman this year and a full ironman next year. I completed my fourth marathon two weeks ago.

sherryleigh 2014-02-28 16:23:41 -0600 Report

Good for you Jared!
I bet that felt good, what an accomplishment!

JaredLahti 2014-02-28 18:54:14 -0600 Report

Thank you. It felt so wonderful to finish. What is more amazing is that my father who has all kinds of health problems walked the entire marathon. One of his conditions is peripheral neuropathy. He also has a bunch of food allergies, which makes his accomplishments even more impressive. I don't want this to come across as rude, but a lot of people make too many excuses and just need to find a way to do more. There is so much research that says you could break the exercise up into 10 minute bouts rather than doing 1 to hours at a time. As diabetics we have to work even harder to not make excuses for ourselves because they do us no good. I know that I have made excuses for myself and all it got me was 50 extra pounds on my frame and 6 months of taking insulin. I am hopefully going to be able to control my diabetes with diet and exercise in two months.

I would be more physically active if I didn't have weakened sciatic nerves caused by back damage from the first automobile accident. I do the best that I can and usually am able to walk about a mile several times a week.

Trudie Ann
Trudie Ann 2014-03-06 13:18:07 -0600 Report

I had the same thing happen and had to get the shots in my back. I am doing a lot better now also. I would go outside and walk but I would either have to get some snow shoes or ice skates and some warmer clothes.

sherryleigh 2014-02-28 16:33:42 -0600 Report

Congrats Lentyl a mile is great! Each time do a little more 1 min then 2 min and there will be no stopping you, work into it slowing and enjoy the scenery. Smile and say to all you pass along the way, after all you may just make their day! Good luck to you.

CaliKo 2014-02-28 14:23:07 -0600 Report

I had more hours in the day! I spend 45 minutes to an hour per day on exercise, but would like more time to add weights when I've walked, or walk when I've done aerobics… An hour-and-a-half to two hours of exercise a day does me so much more good.

My body wasn't so knackered, naff spine due to very bad car accident (had to be cut out mangled car) when I was 18yrs. old, been disabled ever since. xxx

sherryleigh 2014-02-28 16:46:45 -0600 Report

So sorry about the accident, have you tried exercising sitting down? Just a suggestion :)

TopazDee 2014-03-01 13:37:08 -0600 Report

Thanks sherryleigh, yes tried that but due to the trapped nerves from my spine making my arms and legs have pins and needles so violent that they hurt even this kind of exercise is unmanageable that's why I tried swimming but just not enough limb strength for that so I meditate and picture myself doing all the sports I loved doing years ago (I know that's cheating) it used to upset me but over the yrs. have realised to take what life puts in my way, my COPD went down like a lead balloon especially when followed by T2 D.
I lived a full and very active life until my spine gave up, I will not give up on myself my brain makes up for my lack of movement, I belong to a writers group and they have talked me into writing short stories in place of my first writing love which is poetry.
I am also a fully qualified Reiki Crystal Therapy Practitioner so help people with pain and phobias and also teach meditation the best method of relaxation.

I had more time in the day. I run a business, am a girl scout lead of 5 girl scout troops, Sunday school teacher and super intendant, and have two grand children and a child still in school.

margokittycat 2014-02-28 17:11:55 -0600 Report

It can be. Especially this time of year with cookie sales. I have to desperate each girls cookies from her troop and on top of that I also run the cookie cupboard for the troops in our district that is 120 so I get cupboard orders ever week and cupboard deliveries every week and I have to put all the cupboard orders together.

I continue to plan it. Each morning I know what activity I want to do. I tire very quickly, but I have gotten in sound shape twice since diagnosis. Other life factors place walls around any desire to move off and on. I am on the good side right now : )

granniesophie 2014-02-28 13:31:30 -0600 Report

I didn't spend at least 2 1/2 hours everyday in the car commuting back and forth to work! I would need to get up at 2AM to fit exercise in! And, no I don't sit in front of the TV when I get home, I do housework and cooking and then go to bed! About 12 -14 hours a day are at work or getting to and from!!

JaredLahti 2014-02-28 18:40:15 -0600 Report

If you work in an office you could always buy a balance ball or balance ball chair that would give you some additional exercise. One thing I do is keep smaller cups of water at my desk so that I am forced to get up and walk to the break room more often. Also if you work in an office where there is more than one story you could take stairs. These are all little things that I do in addition to my running, cycling and swimming.

The weather were better. Still this is no excuse. I'm in the process of beginning to excercise knowing A1C went up to eight. Doctor suggested half hour on treadmill. Doesn't sound bad I will add weights to. Got to start. Bye.
