12yr old t1 diabetes

In telling close family about new t1 diagnosis, have you had people minimize it? We spent 1 week in the hospital & he got a virus too. Had vomit, fever and projectile diarrhea. No phone calls from some family. Beyond frustrated on many levels.

You will no doubt get many different reactions from minimizing it to overblowing it. Kind of depends on what is going on in that person's life at the time and the understanding that person has of the disease. It also depends a lot on how that person was raised.

Never minimized, I was dx'd at 15, I had a lot of family that either over reacted or just didn't understand. I grew up on a fruit farm and Grandpa just could not comprehend not bringing me a fruit basket. It's a lot to take in for anybody, best of luck with learning to understand what's happening.
