I have been told by drs to drink pop its okay and other drs cringe at the mention of anything but water. Any advice? No carbs, no cals, no sugar, I don't get it.

I stay as far away as possible from artificial sweeteners. What other product come with a cancer warning… cigarettes! Soda is a treat now and when I drink it its regular with no refills.

True but you also have to look at like everyday on the news they put up law suit ads and warnings about medications and surgery types being bad. And why put yourself at risk as a diabetic by drinking something with so much sugar? I appreciate your reply but I have to ask what about every thing else the eventually link to cancer heck half the world is going gluten free by being Misinformed by medical staff. Saying they have Celiac sis was when really they may just need to cut back a little on the bread products. Guess what I'm saying is yes I agree putting yourself first and being vigilant about cancer is important however they're so many things that say years later that we think are healthy and then all the sudden there's a commercial on tv that that it my be linked to causing this our that. And diabetics are so limited already. I appreciate you sharing your views with me though.

I use to drink diet pop until I noticed it effected my headaches, I also have migraine headaches and the article I read said that the pop at one point or another gets past a point at a high temp range and turns to something else that some are sensitive too that tends to cause headaches well thats me and i wonder if that is so in using the fake sugar in cooking too, does anyone know. Anyway now I drink lots of water and occ juice.

There are several reports that since your boxy can't process the chemicals in the artificial sweeteners, you convert them to fags and store it for later or burn it off that way. I quit diet drinks last year and dropped 6 pounds. Who knows…

Water is best. Don't touch that diet crap in my opinion. It can make you lose control of your diabetes if it's consumed too much. If you really want a soda, I recommend just shooting up for the carbs.

Not a good option. Every now and then ok, but water is your best friend. Add some flavor by adding oranges, lemons, cucumbers. I will sometimes get flavored sparkle water.

I make sure to drink my daily amount of water. I like having something else when I have a meal though. Unsweetened tea with a little sugar free flavor to it or fruit infused water or tea are my favorites. When I first got diagonsed I cut pop and lost 5 - 10 lbs with in the first month. We don't keep it in the house (diet or regular). It's something we only have as a treat when we go out to eat.

Howdy Mel
I am one who believes that the "diet" soda pop helps to put fat on me. I have found that once I drink diet pop I get the munchies. What I understand is this: is that the sweet center of your brain is fooled by the sweetness of the artificial sweetener and unless it is met with a certain amount of calories, one's hunger is triggered and one will consume most anything to satisfy it.

I still will occasionally drink a "diet" soda to give me something more than filtered water to taste, but it is rare.

Praying God's best for you and yours

I asked my Dietician about drinking only water and her reply was you can also drink un-sweetened products like iced-tea (no caffeine) and decaf coffee. I drink diet iced teas after reading the labels. Water is a must also.

For me I am an insomniac. I have a regular coffee in the AM and that's it.

I had insomnia way before the diabetes. There is a Sleep Disorder Community you can join. There is a pulldown tab on top of this page, left side. Good Luck,Mel.

Thank you for your reply I have stopped for a month now in hopes I would loose weight on this all water and HCG diet but I haven't lost more than 2 pounds and that was I guess my one escape to be normal is I could have my diet pop. And I've been type one for 25 years diagnosed at 9 I have grown up with this so I was wanting some insight and I appreciate u taking your time.

It has sodium and aspartame. Excess amount of sodium can increase ones blood pressure and the aspartame retains fluid in the body. I've heard of people losing 10-15 lbs of water weight after stop drinking diet beverages.

Those are the issues with drinking diet drinks, but I've been drinking them for years!!!

I hope that helps

How does one get off of soda after being on it for so long?

Mel1824 2014-01-16 17:37:51 -0600 Report

It is very hard in my opinion I was definitely addicted like a drug to it. What helped me was the encourage of my kids that said they would drink water with me not pop. We didn't buy it but trust me a hard hard thing to stop. If u drink it with caffeine taper down other wise if u stop cold turkey then headaches are awful and you drag for several days. Best wishes.
