My friend is currently going through a bad case of it right now. She waited too long to get it looked at and I'm not sure if it's the DVT in her leg or the shingles that has caused the permanent nerve damage. (We haven't been apart in about 6 or 7 years and normally I'm the one with her in the ER/doctor appt or I'm watching my god children.) All I do know is any info on how to help her deal with the pain of the shingles or the nerve pain would be more than helpful. I've looked online and found a few things, but anything from people who have actually gone through it would be really helpful.

I had it about 6 years ago. Went to hospital with severe pain in the lower abdomen and the groin area. Had no rash at the time just one of the worst pains I ever had. Until I got kidney stones.WOW…Without the rash the doctors didnt know for sure what could cause this severe of pain. They put me on tylenol that night. First thing in AM got new prescription for some heavy duty pain killers. Couple days later the rash showed up and the doc said it was shingles. Had it for 2 1/2 months. Got hooked on the pain pills. Which took about a week of cold sweats and nausea to get over that. Wait… Gets better…Finally went to a neurologist who gave be some Lidocane patches that I applied directly to the area. Took care of the shingles… But while I was off and laid off all that time, I developed Restless Leg Syndrome. This is another bad one… but I'm still kickin' and I see the sun rise every morning. I guess my advice would be see a specialist right away.

I'm a nurse, I find it's very subjective! Some are in excruciating pain and others just need a Tylenol for the annoying pain.
