Bland Diet

I was recently diagnosed the end of Oct, 2013. It was difficult getting my blood sugards down until the Doctor on a Bland diest, lean protein and vegetables. The dietician had started me on a 2 carb a day, but that keep my levels high. I've managed to stick to the bland, losing weight,but now I am very burned out and cravings are out of the roof. What can I eat to provide variety, ease the cravings and maintain my blood surgar, currently I am averaging in the 90's but would prefer to stay in the 80's

i drink a lot of smoothies full of vegetables and fruit. i think we need a good amount of fruits and veggies and i think we have eat from all the food groups in moderation. there really is no magic formula or one particular type of food to eat. just eat what you want in smaller amounts and make sure you are covering all your nutrition bases. that should give you good numbers. good luck! You sound like me. Even a small amount of carbohydrate makes my numbers high. Eating low carb is not that bad though.

A lean protein and veggies doesn't have to be bland. You can kick stuff up with spices. Even something as simple as roasting your veggeis with some spices and a little olive oil can really help add to your meal.

Salads can be very flavorful if you use things like parsley, sage, tarragon and even mint in your greens. I use all kinds of herbs to go with my lettuce to take that to flavor town. Even a simple vinegar and oil dressing can have some zest added to it with garlic or herbs.

Moroccan and Indian flavors help a lot. Adding curry spices and the earthy spices like cumin and cinnamon are great.

I am so confused right now, Would those professionals really help me to understand all of this. Sometimes it is too much to deal with

When you are confused, you have to take a step back. Take a break. You are trying to learn too much at one time. You will never learn all there is to know because information is always changing.

Diabetes is not a one size fits all disease. It can effect people differently. The people in the hospital are not going to do follow up care so they tell you what you need to know then and there and they want that hospital bed. A GP has minimal information and is not the best source for diabetic information. He/she can make sure your A1C is on track

Even though I am not on insulin I agree with kim 2 carbs per day on insulin simply doesn't sound right. You NEED to see those professionals as soon as possible.

If I were you, I would ask for referrals to the endocrinologist, an eye doctor, and nutritionist.

Make a list of questions for your endocrinologist and take them with you. Ask those questions. Start writing down everything you eat for each meal including snacks. Take this with you to the nutritionist so that it can be used to help you build a diet that will work for you. The one question you have to ask the GP and Endocrinologist is how many carbs per day you can have. The nutritionist I saw was not the one to tell me my carb intake per day. The next best thing is a diabetic education class. Many are free depending on where you live. Learn to advocate for yourself. Good luck to you.

There is a lot to deal w i know. I was dx in April but was fortunate cuz my husbands been diabetic 30+ yrs so i knew a lot of this from being his partner in his care. Now we help each other. I suggest finding a good endo And cert diabetic educator. We have both n they r awesome. Check w local hospital for classes

I would try different seasonings to flavor things. I've discovered sauteed cabbage n onions n mushrooms w garlic n pepper. Keep cabbage kind of crisp and it tastes sweet. There is a good recipe for quick egg n bacon "muffins" no flour. That's good for quick breakfast. I know its hard not tonnage carbs. Are u on meds??

yes I am on meds a fast action actinginsulin before each meal and a slow acting at night I like the cabbage and will try the muffins thanks so much

If u r on insulin, then i don't understand the very low carb diet? Are u seeing an endocronologist or a gp? Have u seen a diabetic educator?

I received a great deal of instruction while hospilized when diagnosed. My doctor is a GP, Following the standard diabetic diet only brought my numbers down to the 400 range. Even now if I deviate and add a 1/2 cup of rice or a piece of whole wheat toast, my numbers soar.

Unfortunately, Sigried, any nutritional instruction for GPs and Hospital Drs is at best minimal. To get better info, see a nutritionist which specializes in Diabetes care. I believe an Endochrinologist (gland Dr) who specializes in the pancreas would also be a good Dr to consult.

That's where an endo. And educator comes in they can adjust your carb to insulin ratio so you can eat and have more than two carbs per day. Endo specializes in diabetes

I agree with kim a diabetes education class and seeing an endocronologist is the way to go. A nutritionist would also be a big help for you.

The instruction you recieved in the hospital is good but you have to enhance that with additional help. Just seeing a GP alone is not always the route to take.
