I'm really angry. Because of Obamacare my insurance will no longer cover freestyle test strips. This is a huge problem because my omnipod requires these for its meter!
Now starting next month I will be carrying a onetouch meter AND my omnipod meter and will have to manually put in my BG numbers. What a hassel!
Anyone else have these problems ?

I've never had insurance I've always found if you ask around at docs office they usually have drug reps that leave tons of insulin, test strips and meters and they will give them to you. Also I've always bought my test strips off eBay and pay Aton less and never had any problems also look on craigslist

I was reading through all of these responses and you guys need to send these notes to your representatives. The only way they are going to know how people are affected is if you tell them. This is one of the most honest sharing of how things are actually going. No more pie in the sky thoughts here.

What Obama did might help some but hurt many more then he helped. I am disabled and on medacard and Medicaid so I am not affected but my heart goes out to so,many that will be or are hurt.

That's very cool for you. But for people like me it's destroying us. We've never been in so much debt and especially for people like me who are literally just starting out, it's a little unfortunate that insurance hardly covers anything for us. If he really wanted to help his citizens he would have helped people like you without ruining people like me.

I have insurance through the State of NH for which my late husband work for 30 years. All those years he was told his insurance would be paid for him. He had been retired 6 months when the legislature decided retirees should pay for part of their insurance. $65.00 a month each. Then in 2011 (three months after he died) the cost went up to $110.00 a month. Then in August of that year, we were told we would now have a $500.00 deductible and copays were going up. Of oourse our pension didn't go up! Since I am too young to collect Social Security I had to make do… I had been getting 200 Freestyle strips a month for free. Now they were $135.00 for 100. I changed to a ReliOn meter and get the strips for $9.00 for 50 at Walmart. Have to test on my hand but its not so bad and a lot less expensive. If ReliOn can charge only $9.00 why does FreeStyle have to charge 12 times more? I am rather concerned though because we had CVS Caremark for prescriptions but the State just changed us to Express Scripts. Supposedly the price of our drugs is not going to go up.

Hi Jay, Call your Omnipod rep in your area and tell him of your dilemma with the testripes. I had this problem with my Blue cross insurance. He helped me get my testripes for 18.00 for 300 stripes. Call them. I hope this works for you. Deborah xx

I'm lucky enough to have insurance and received a new Bayer Contour meter in mid-December which also links with my Medtronic Minimed pump. Your problem may not be due to Obama but to tightening of accepted drugs by insurers. My insurance Rx plan is managed through Express Scripts and I was notified in November that they would be excluding Novolog in 2014 and recommended I change to Humalog, which I've done. After mailing in my new RX for the Contour test strips in mid-December, I thought I'd better check to see if they would be covered in 2014…Surprise!!!.. the only strips they will be covering in 2014 are the One Touch strips. I called on Dec 27 and Express Scripts hadn't planned on filling my new RX until 2014 which meant I would be on the hook for the entire cost rather than the 2013 co-pay (I test 8 times per day and the total cost would run @$700 for 90 days!) They stated they needed clarification on the amount and usage of strips from my doctor and could do nothing until it was received. Needless to say, I was not happy and expressed my concern and displeasure at their handling of this new prescription. I further added that I would call my endo and if this were not handled as a 2013 RX, I would be writing letters to the state insurance department as well as to the president of Express Scripts and my insurance plan administrator. I called my endo that same morning and they advised they had received nothing inquiring about this RX but that they would call with the required clarification. They did and by Dec 28, I received a confirmation from Express Scripts that the RX was being processed and will be shipped prior to year-end. Had I not followed up and pressed them to properly handle this RX, I would have been billed the full amount in 2014. I'll go back and use the One-Touch strips for my 2014 refill until I become eligible for Medicare. The OneTouch Ultralink meter also links with my pump. (Sorry this is so long…but insurance problems can be soooo very aggravating!) Insurers hate to get State Insurance department complaints. In 2011, when I first went on the pump, I had a battle with Medco about their reducing the number of insulin vials I needed from 3 vials for 90 days to 2 vials…I posted a discussion here called "Medco makes my blood boil" about that incident).

Not to get too political, but…prepare for the middle class to pay for everything. I have worked hard for my insurance since I was 18 and have been constantly appalled by people with state health insurance with no copays or deductibles that said I had crappy insurance, rather than just being quiet about it, or a thank you for paying for it. I'm not talking about ppl that need legitimate help, but ppl that walk through life with their hand out waiting for it to be filled. I don't want to see sick people needing medical attention, but I work hard, why should I sacrifice the options I've earned for the betterment of someone else's condition?

It's not affordable for all those people he was trying to help. There's no way this was his best. I'd be willing to bet that this has hurt more people that had insurance before rather than helping anyone. I haven't talked to anyone who loves this new law. The only thing I've heard is that their premiums have gone so high that many people are now having to choose which meds to keep and those who are now qualified can't afford the plans anyway. This can't be his best. If it is, it sucks.

Mr BHO has previously stated (before the PPACA {obamacare}started) that he wanted simgle (govt) payer healthcare. There are those who believe that this "trainwreck" which is PPACA is a way to eventually achieve this socialist single payment scheme.

theladyiscrazy 2014-01-03 19:02:52 -0600 Report

He has. We had people who lost their insurance policies due to his "program" and he knew full well it would happen. The "new" policies they can get cost 10 times (yes ten times) the amount they paid previously for less coverage. How is that helping?

jaydoubleyou23 2014-01-02 22:11:04 -0600 Report

Yeah I totally agree with you. It may be helping selected people but it's destroying the whole middle class! He isn't taking our needs into consideration at all!

I have to pay a deductible of 1250 before they'll start covering my omnipods. Thanks obamacare… They'll probably won't cover anything next year, I'll probably have to go back to pens!

My DR is actually having me hold off on getting a pump to see if they'll be covered. He doesn't want me to go a year with one and then have to go back.

pretty close to same numbers here, for my Tslim infusion sets, fortunately I could set up a Flex account to cover it. Check w/ Omnipod and see if you qualify for a payment plan or something

*hugs* but what is the big deal though. Atleast they are still going to help you. I'm not happy either. I got a new meter and I hate the individual lancets. I liked my drum lancets, they didn't hurt but what can I do. I don't have to pay so that's good.

jaydoubleyou23 2013-12-31 07:43:06 -0600 Report

Because these test strips are still way more expensive than what I was originally paying.

dagger1234 2013-12-31 11:48:28 -0600 Report

I did a comparison too with my old and new ones too. My new test strips are more expensive but the meter was cheaper lol anyway I know it depends on the brand and the costs because insurances don't want to pay a lot. I mentioned that to my educator and she said it's not that anything is cheaper and or more expensive, it's that blue cross blue shield signed a contract with them so I gotta stick wit my new meter. Kind of stupid because we should get to use what we like with our comfort level but whatever
