I been a diabetic over 20 yrs. I never went to diabetic education. The company I work for, told me if I went to class and took off work I lose my job. So I been wing it. I started with just Metformin, and later added Januvia, about 3 yrs ago I started Lantus insulin. I take 22 units in the morning and night 1500 metformin and 100 mg of Januvia. I am not sure if my Diabeetus is get more advance as I get older or am I just real bad at controlling it. In the last years the highest my A1C was 8.9 about 5 years ago and now I at about 6.9 I was very strict last year and got down to 5.6 I just got where I could not eat that small amount of crabs. My average AM level is about 120. the highest level an hour after eating sweets at a Birthday party my level was 330. I felt so sick. The other thing is if I take my level a couple hrs before I get up when It is still dark out it is lower and then goes up with the sun. I wish I could ask my doctor I just afraid she be upset and disappointed. I know it sounds crazy. thanks for any in put

Never worry about a doc getting upset at you. It's their job to get you the help you need. If the doc is not compassionate with you Fire him/her. It sounds by your numbers that you are doing what's best for you. You know what makes you feel sick(me too). Your A1C has gotten better.

Pretty sure you could win a lawsuit with some ease against your company. Have them write that down on paper for you.

Sean she could win the lawsuit but only a boss who is a total moron would put a threat in writing.

Going to a diabetes education class is wonderful, and Joyce has a good idea to schedule a vacation day so you can attend a class. You can also sign up for free ionline nformation from the American Diabetes Associaiton here: http://www.diabetes.org/living-with-diabetes/... Please do talk with your physician about your concerns as well as target blood sugar numbers. They can be a bit different for each person, and your physician can give you the best individual information. I'm glad you're here asking questions! ~Lynn @Glucerna

If your job allows for you to earn leave, vacation, sick, and you want to take a diabetes education class, put in for the day off two weeks before the class. They cannot fire you for taking a vacation day. The last time an employer told me that, I told him to fire me so I can file a lawsuit. Those words never came out of his mouth again because he knew I would sue him. One way of controlling employees they know fear them is to tell them that. They know the employee is going to comply and be fearful of them. It is a means of mentally controlling you and giving him/her power. They do not do it to people they know are not going to fall for it. If you do take a day off and get fired, you can possibly sue and win.

As a diabetic, why would you go to a birthday party and load up on sweets? I do not eat them unless I know what my numbers are. When you test in the middle of the night and your level is low yet when you wake up it is high, a Dawn Phenomenom has occurred, better known as a liver dump. The liver doesn't trust you to take care of your body so it releases the carbs it doesn't need to keep it going. I eat a protien just before bed to prevent this.

The worse thing you can do is not talk to your doctor. Believe me the doctor can tell by blood test what you are doing. Talking to the doctor is the best help you can get. You should never ask anyone to give you medical advice but your doctor because your doctor knows your medical history.

Please go talk to your doctor. Your health and well being depends on it.

Thank you for your input. In Calif a employee can be Fired without cause. some company have very strict work codes. And I worked for "Medtronic" who makes stents, heart pumps and other medical devices now did just moved all there plants over sea. As a grandparent you go to your grandchildren Birthday party my question is I do not know how high is safe for your level after eating anything let alone sweets. should it go up 100 ? 300 ? I just wanted to know. Thank you now tell me about Dawn Phenomenon I will look it up. Thanks again for your reply

That is the same as Maryland. However, I don't take kindly to threats from anyone. I have no fear of people or the insane games they play. I got fired for not doing something I was not authorized to do by a supervisor who did not work in my department. I won unemployment because of wrongful termination. I filed a grievance with the Union and won not only my job back, but all of my back salary and they offered me a buy out. I took the buy out and sued the hospital and won.

I was then hired by our umbrella community organization to organize and manage a program that would work with the police department. I was the only one in the community with the knowledge. I was hired on a recommendation from the police department. Once I was hired. I was not allowed to do the job and they refused to pay me. I sued them and won.

No matter how strict their employment policies are, if you earn vacation and sick leave they cannot deny you taking it. They can get into trouble with the Feds for that. I have seen that happen.

I go to all kinds of functions on a regular basis. There are all kinds of foods including sweets. That doesn't mean I have to eat the sweets.

I shoot for no higher than 140-150 as my high. I never reach it after eating sweets because I have eaten food with very little or no carbs. If I test and my results are 101 then I will have a very small piece of cake and remove the frosting or I have one cookie and my blood sugar doesn't go beyond 125.

You cannot go to your grandchildrens birthday parties and eat a large slice of cake with the frosting anymore than you can go and eat cookies, chips, pretzels the eat the cake and ice cream. That will take you blood sugar way up. Just because it is a grandchilds party doesn't mean you have to eat the sweets. I went to my cousins birthday party and had a sliver of cake and scraped the frosting off. I did not have a high from that. Kids are so excited they don't know nor do they care if you don't eat cake and ice cream.

You really have a choice to make. Go to the parties and have a very little piece of cake or a cookie with no ice cream or keep going down the road you are going and not be around to see that beautiful baby you are holding grow up.

Jude please go to a diabetes education class and please talk to your doctor. Diabetes can kill you slowly if you don't take proper care of yourself. My grandparents died when I was young. I never knew my grandparents on my dads side of the family or my grandfather on my moms side. They died when I was an infant and my grandmother died with I was 5. I missed out on all the grandparent things. Don't let your grandkids miss out on having a healthy grandmom around to love and spoil them.
