I have a problem with getting my diabetes under control with the income I get from government assistance after paying rent and bills I have enough for meats and dried goods like pasta and rice. I know I need to have fruits and vegetables in my diet but with the expense it makes it near impossible. Example at the corner store it's a 1.25 for an apple and .50 cents for a bag of chips. I've looked at the recipes here and would love to try making some but realistically I can't afford half of the ingredients. Am open to suggestions and ideas.

I am in the SNAP program. I get enough money for more than a month becaue of how I shop.

I do not shop at corner stores. They will rip you off in less than a heart beat and they prey on fixed income people. I live in a food desert and now the neighboring community is joining the desert because their supermarket is closing and it is an affluent community. Those of us with automobiles or access to someone who can take us to supermarkets fair better than those who don't. Many people use public buses to get to them.

I buy leaner cuts of meat because I have always been use to buying those. You can purchase two whole chickens which cost less than packs of chicken parts. If you are near a SuperWal-Mart their fresh veggies and fruits are cheaper than a supermarket. I buy fresh leafy greens in bulk in November and cook and freeze them. This saves me money during the winter. I also make big pots of soups to freeze during the summer and buy end of season veggies for the soups. I make a money selling handcrafted jewelry at a Farmers Market. The advantage is that because I am a vendor. Some of the farmers give you a discount especially if you are a regular customer.

It is hard to eat healthy on a fixed income but it can be done based on where and how you shop. Today I went to the county to buy a turkey breast. The supermarket 20 blocks from me has them for $2.69 lb. The same store 5 miles away has the same turkey breast for $1.29lb. I don't take that trip unless I am going to another store in the area.

Government don't give you a living that's just how it is , even in the states.
I thank god I don't need to live off what the government thinks is a living.
My med bills are 18k a year and a lot of people don't even make that in a year .
That's with the best ins I can get.
Hugs and best wishes

Okay? Fruits are cheap so that is not an excuse. Get brown rice . The most expensive would be healthy lean meats. I get food assistance and medical and that's it. They won't even give me rent help. I am struggling too but luckily my bf helps too.

I get food assistance also but I can't get medicaid with diabetes. In my state they won't give you rent assistance unless you are homeless, just got released from prision or are in an emergency situation such as fire etc…or if you have children.

The woman at social services told me she would give me the name of a doctor who would approve me for medicaid if I told him she sent me. I really have no interest in going to jail. That is medicaid fraud and I want no part of it. Yet I know people who can work the system and get everything. I would love to have a job but that is hard to do here so I am trying to figure out a way to start a consulting company that I can do from home.

depends I mean a bag of apples is almost 5 dollars if not just a bit more in most stores, plus it doesn't help that my room mate who is also diabetic refuse to help because it's to much.

Don't let ur roommate eat ur food. Label ur food and keep track of it. I don't normally eat apples that's why.. So I don't know. Lol. I like oranges, grapes and bananas. And strawberries yum. Or what you can do is get some low fat or Greek yogurt and buy it in bulk and save more moneys nd will last you longer!

Dagger is there anything you can do to Greek yogurt so that it isn't so tart. I love the creamy texture but it is way too tart for me. I tried adding fruit to the plain but that didn't work.

Prices are very different here in Canada than the U.S

Sure are. Friends in Canada can't believe the prices we pay for some things. Much cheaper. Do you have a Farmers Market near you in the summer. Food at them is usually cheaper.
