Down with the Fries up with ????

But are Onion Rings any better? Are there any bar foods that pass muster? The local Pool Hall has a great menu (for a "bar") including salads, Of course they have your typical Pizza, Dogs and Burgers, Chicken Wings, and many other "juicy" items.

What sort of snacking foods do you enjoy when you go out for an evening of carousing with the gang?

Normally when I go out I either eat before and if I didn't have to eat before I make sure to eat something. Carls jr chicken sandwich, some kind of food. I prefer hamburgers (: but I mean eat some kind of carb foods so when you do go drinking you will be ok and your blood won't drop low. I had a bad experience when I went out with my friend to a show in LA and I didn't eat before so when I started to drink mixed drinks, I have myself units for the drink. I shouldn't have because I didn't eat anything before so all that insulin hit me hard and fast. It got to the point where I was in the crowd of people and I was like ok "I feel weird, I should check my blood" I was 46. I went to go get soda because obviously at shows they don't sale food. I knew soda has a high sugar dose. Well after that I gave it 15 minutes and my blood went from 46 to 24. I was so scared! I had to go to the paramedics side and tell them I'm type 1 diabetic and my blood is extremely low. They gave me this glucose in a tune that tasted funny. They started to ask me questions to make sure I was "there". They told me and my friend that I need to go eat something with a tone of carbs because that glucose is just a bandaid for the time being. So I was really happy that they let me and my friend leave to go get something to eat and reenter. That was really a scary experience but yet a cool one just because I got to eat a fat hamburger and come back and finish and watch the show.

You bring up a really important situation: what to do to make sure you don't have hypoglycemia when drinking alcoholic beverages. There's some good information here: and be sure to talk with your doctor about alcohol and it's effects when combined with diabetes medications or insulin. I always take small candy mints with me now when I go out "Just in Case". It does not take a lot to square me back up but nothing simply does not work.

Wings and celery. I love onion rings- I take the breeding off and just nibble it. I eat the onions. Yum!

Watch the carbs in potatoes! They'll raise your BG.

Are you type one or two?
I almost want to say that onion rings are worse for you. But most of the time, they are cooked the same way and are deep fried. In my opinion, I think the best choice would be jojo's (or potato wedges, whatever they call them where you're from).
But it is good to treat yourself every once in a while! French fries are my favorite! :)

T2 - non-insulin, metformin takes care of me so far. I too prefer the fried potatoes but I also like the taste of the fried onions now and then. My biggest problem is I simply like all the wrong kinds of foods and need to start turning my self around before I get into REAL trouble.

BTW - since I've joined DC here I have managed to lose a couple of pounds simply because I am more aware of my consumption. I know, two pounds is nothing in the long run unless I can keep it off. I'm tracking so I will know over time what is going on.

Bar food is rough to work with for me. If the wings are naked, they don't have the carbs added to them from the breading, but there are a lot of calories tied up in those puppies. That is my go to food for a place like that. I get the celery and the blue cheese dressing and avoid any sauces that have sugars in them like the teryaki or glazed wings. I just go for a good medium heat. If you get hot, it is said to be better for you calorie burning wise, but I can't handle the heat.

Often there are options, you just have to ask. I know it's not always easy when everyone around you is snacking on sliders and nachos, but see what the menu offers that you can adjust for yourself.

Between fries and rings...they are both all carb. So if you are eating them with a protein, it might work out, but you have to watch things like dips and condiments. There are a lot of hidden sugars in those items.

If I eat fries or onion rings, I will do one of three things:

1) I asking there is a kids size portion available
2) I will share an order with my boyfriend
3) If he is not wanting it, and kids size is unavailable, then I ask for a to-go container and put 1/2 the order away right off the bat, that way I'm not tempted to eat too many.

I have started to do the take home box in many places up front and it does help. Plus I tell them to leave the breads off the plate. If it doesn't come to the table, I am less tempted to eat it, even if it's just a bite or two.

Now here is a good analysis. I suspected that the fries and rings would be pretty close cousins but I wanted to see what others thought. I like the idea of the naked wings and the celery/blue cheese dressing is a hit. Thanks for the review.

Knowledge is power, right? Compare the carbohydrate in onion rings vs french fries and also look at the calories in the other items that are low in carbohydrate (like hot dogs or burgers if you eat them without the bun). One source lists 8-9 onion rings with 276 calories and 31g carbohydrate; a small serving of fast-food french fries has about 245 calories and 31g of fat. Some bars have nuts, and while often salty they're a somewhat healthier option. 3 cups of popcorn contains about 15 grams of carbohydrate, so that's another potential option. Should I ask what you're drinking when you're out with the gang? :) ~Lynn @Glucerna

Lynn onions have natural sugar but the fries would be a better option between the two because if the venue makes its own batter for onion rings you wouldn't know the carb amount per serving. If he is shooting pool or dancing he could be burning off some of the carbs so what he drinks might not be much of a problem. The wise thing to would be to test before the meal, wait an hour or two to test after the meal and he would know if the meal caused a spike and how much of a spike. Once he finds that out then he knows he can have that meal again with little or no problems.

I like the idea of the before and after testing. Good thought. FWIW - I do play for 2-4 hours when I am in a pool room and sometimes even more if I am playing a tournament and doing well.

When you are eating something new and don't know what it will do to your blood sugar test first then eat, then wait to test again. This helped me find out what will spike me and what won't.

I am not allowed to bowl with my sister and friends after I got a strike in the lane next to me. I have no clue as to how that happen. I can shoot pool for hours on the computer but again not allowed to shoot it with my sister or friends after the pool cue incident.

Once I grew up, I stopped hanging out in bars, clubs, pool halls and places like that. I don't even have friends that do that. Even when I hung out in those kinds of places, I didn't eat the food. Was way too greasy, very salty, covered in some kind of sauce or dipped in batter and fried.

Why not stick with the salad?

I use the pool hall as social outlet. Maybe I'm not grown up yet or maybe I just see the world differently than some people. The salads are good and I have consumed them on many occasions. I was just looking for something a little different.

I have never found anything good to eat in a bar even when I use to hang out. These days even the wings are in a bbq sauce. That would be okay to eat with your salad. Even with salads the dressing could be loaded with sugar.

Old, you have a right to your feelings. It was not my intention to make you feel bad. So we are good. However, try the wings with your salad.
