Hey DC family, I did something last night for dinner (it was my birthday) I know, I know it should not be an excuse but my family took me out for a mexican restraunt and I ordered…2 soft tacos (flour tortilla) some refried beans on the side and of course I ate some chips with salsa …sigh!!! I checked my BS 1 hour after and it was 166 :( after 2 hours it was 139. I was so mad at myself that I feel like I may have messed up my wonderful a1c of 5.4 , does anyone else ever have splurges? Is it ok for special occasions. I am trying to control on diet and exercise. I just wanted to celebrate my birthday and eat something that I used to enjoy, I have been doing good thus far. Thoughts????

We have to learn to not beat ourselves up when we get off track. I have a way of giving myself a day that I can treat myself. If I have been doing good, and my numbers are looking good I try to eat something I like with my meal. Cake, Cookies, ice cream, etc. Then I just get back to doing what I need to do. I'm happy and my numbers are still okay.

Thanks everyone who relplied!! I decided that I am not going to be so hard on myself as long as I get back on track… I just get freaked out when I get high numbers and don't know how long they will last but I'm learning more and more about my condition :) THANKS EVERYONE for the BIRTHDAY wishes ;) it was awesome , and so were the tacos lol

Don't be mad at yourself every diabetic has to treat themselves to a treat every now and then and I eat Mexican most the time when I go out and my blood sugars are fine

Damned I say, you will be … oh wait. Wrong sermon, that one was from page 54 and I meant to read from page 45. Happy Birthday. Just get right back on the wagon and you will be fine.

There is nothing wrong with "Indulging/Treating" yourself to a special treat, especially on your Birthday. It's if you find yourself always having these "Special Treats" all the time, that it could become problematic.

If I know there is a special occasion and that I'm going to be eating foods that may not necessarily be in my normal routine, I will plan accordingly to that nights meal, but also make sure that the rest of week that I am "good". If for instance I know I'm going to a buffet, then I make sure that day I'm on top of my BS, and then I make sure that for a full week after that I carefully eat, making sure to not overdo it.

Honestly it will be totally fine! You deserved that meal :) And one day won't up your A1c that bad I promise! Good for you and happy birthday, those numbers are awesome!

I had my splurge tonight as tomorrow is my birthday. I also went to Mexican and had just tacos for dinner. That way I saved some room and carbs for some shared fried ice cream. There is nothing wrong with an occasional treat and that one high number will not ruin your hard work unless you continue to celebrate more birthdays....LOL

Happy Birthday!

I had a splurge last night. My mother made her first batch of my great-grandmother's peanut butter fudge. It is amazing. I has a small (1/2 inch x 1/2 inch) piece with dinner. I adjusted for it and my numbers were fine.
The key is to keep those splurges for special occasions.

The good news is that you tested your blood sugar, and that means you're continuing to pay attention to how different foods affect diabetes management. You didn't throw caution to the wind completely, and I bet you're back on track now with healthy eating. Happy belated birthday! ~Lynn @Glucerna

Happy Birthday. It was your birthday. I have not read anything that says you can't enjoy your birthday by eating something you don't eat on a regular basis. I never feel guilty about anything I eat. Your numbers were not bad so why feel guilty because you ate something you really wanted?

Thanks just Joyce for the birthday wishes but I just seem to be so hard on myself every time I go above 140, because they say damage is being done to my body when it's that high, I am a newly diagnosed so I am still learning but I always panic with high numbers :(

howdy again sugarbaby.

you are correct that complications may be start if you exceed 140 and stay over 140 for an extended period of time. To briefly spike over that limit does not do much if any damage.

I didn't even know what an a1c means…I'm still new at this. I googled it and I need to get a tester. Ahhh. I'm afraid to know the outcome.

guarisco66 2013-12-11 01:38:07 -0600 Report

You usually get a tester when your Dr. Diagnoses you. Call him and ask him. Then he will tell you how often to test. I test only once a day, in the morning. Unless I feel shaky. My Kaiser gave me a tester, plus the lancets. Strips I pay for. Good luck!

dagger1234 2013-12-11 01:54:14 -0600 Report

I just got an insulin pen and a blood test meter. No. I was not even aware off an a1c but I will definitely ask!

Your DR isn't watching your a1c?
How were you diagnosed?

dagger1234 2013-12-11 01:55:25 -0600 Report

Tell me about it. I wrote on my calendar on the 24th when I see her and going to ask. That's why I hate switching counselor and doctors. I and them have a lack of communication and it's a waste of every times time! I googled the a1c's and they r too expensive!! *sighs

guarisco66 2013-12-11 01:40:44 -0600 Report

Oh, and Happy Birthday! Mexican food is my all time favorite. A splurge is good for you once in a while..special times! :)

jayabee52 2013-12-08 16:38:11 -0600 Report

Howdy sugarbaby!

Congrats on your birthday! There is no reason to feel guilty over a temporary overindulgence. As long as it does not continue! I pray you enjoyed!
