Last week at The Tuesday Carb fest two of my nieces and I started a world wide web search for a surprise for their Mom/ one of my sisters. They found a link between a former classmate of theirs and her Mom to their Mom. Quickly they checked FB, and before an hour passed had been friended by the classmate.
Got me to wondering if I could find my very first BFF as easily. She had moved when I was in 2nd grade and 3rd grade for her. We had a few sleepovers for a couple of years. Until our parents got to busy to drive across the metro area to make the child swaps. Last actual contact had been at her sister's wedding when we were in 8th and 9th grade.
Thursday night I did a quick FB check…sent a friend request and a message containing did you live at…
With in minutes BFF and I are messaging like mad from 9 pm to 3 am.
Her Mom would be in town this Monday for a 2 week visit. She would bring her Mom to The Cake Lady's Carb Fest. But not tell her where they were actual going. The Cake Lady and my BFF's Mom had been BF but not in contact for years. I decided to clear the plan with my Mom. She thought my BFF's Mom had died. So her surprise was a few days earlier.
Went to Mom's earlier than usual yesterday to help with food prep. Was impressed that we made a tossed salad with no croutons . Calculated that 1 crescent roll would be ok for me to indulge in at 12 carbs as I unwrapped the pop open container. Did not study the label of the condensed soup she added to the chicken and vegies that was to be the filling for the crescent rolls. Snuck a few bites of cheese as we assembled the crescent ring. I would be OK BG wise as long as I skipped the cupcakes she had lurking on the counter for dessert.
Then I checked my phone for an update from BFF for progress on getting her Mom to my Mom's
What…her Mom was concerned there would be no food at "The Candle Party" they were to attend and wanted to back out!! BFF promised a meal before they left her house, so her Mom could take her shot as she has Diabetes.
I messaged back meal would be more D friendly then often and I was T2 diet controlled.
Hugs, surprised BFF Mom, years of catching up and some Diabetes education.
BFF still the bossy, leader, and rusher headlong into trouble. Me still the let her think she is a leader, maybe a little more cautious, and make them laugh either at or with me.
BFF miffed her Mom doesn't try hard enough to keep her BG good. BFF's Mom bristles a bit. I step in and explain to BFF it might be that the Liver and Pancreas are just not paying attention to each other's signals or the stupid little micro filial are not doing their thing. BFF's Mom surprised and glad I have grown wiser over the years.
BFF's Mom gives me the look when I explain I can eat carrots and apples with no BG spike. Then she pokes BFF in the ribs and says "I told you it's not my fault…if I eat half an apple I go over 200".
BFF says gloatingly "I ate three brownies once and tested…my BG was 88."
She almost lost her BFF title…but then I remembered she is allergic to bees..so I forgave her snotty Princes of Carbs attitude…after I made her give her Mom a teeny taste of The Cake Lady's cupcake.
BFF is seriously planning on crashing next Tuesday's CarbFest.

What a great story! You were able to connect with a friend and help out her mom all in the same evening. ~Lynn @Glucerna

I was so glad to get back together. Can hardly wait for more times with BFF. Her Mom really needed this visit. She is dealing with a 3rd cancer episode. Think it perked her up.

Great story Graylin. I gotta ask - how is it you're not writing books? I could read hundreds of pages of this, your escapades with the hello kitty microwave, burrito plastic, and on…

Aw gee, I didn't realize you remembered so many of my misadventures in cooking. Managed to get toaster oven cooking privileges back this last week.
Maybe I should do the blog thing…

By all means blog away - I may even join the facebook or the tweet thing just to follow you! You'd make more money off a book though. I can already think of a title - "Cooking with Graylin - Golden Black is too a color"

Golden Black…that was usually the end color of the biscuits I made for my ladies at my former work place. Seems I never mastered the timing for cooking frozen biscuits.

LOL I love the book title! And you are right, and she should also do her own photographs. Have you seen her stuff? It's as good as her stories. She's the full package.

I think your mom is really making some break through. Now that you have more in the mix, maybe she will do even better. And soon your carb fests might be veggie fests. Well, it could happen....LOL

Unfortunately BFF's Mom is only in town for a couple of weeks. And BFF (AKA Princess of Carbs) most likely will be a bad influence on The Cake Lady carbwise. BFF most likely has already decided I need the practice in making wise food choices. She will enjoy bringing tempting new goodies, just to torment me.

Oh, I see. Well, then it's back to normal on the cake lady's plate. Bummer. If they are here for a short time, maybe it can get worked out of her system?? You can dream you know.

Hey, at least I can give BFF's Mom a little backup for the next week and whenever she is in town. BFF lives across the Metro area from me. .
