Eating bread with type 2

Please help! I am so confused if I could eat bread, I am a newly diagnosed type 2 on diet controlled and feel like I will never be able to just eat a sandwich again :( how many of you type 2s eat bread? Is this allowable in a diet controlled ? Would taking Metformin Allow me to be eat a little more foods? PLease tell me your experiences. Thx

I have been a type 2 since 2001, when I started out I was very confused, my doc told me to go on Atkins and stay on it. That's the way I mostly eat to this day. But your body changes over time and food you could tolerate changes, I began telling myself I could introduce some high fiber breads and skinny sandwich breads by counting the carbs, I was alright for a while with my aic being in the 6.8 range about 130 to 158, but as the years went on, my aic went higher and my readings went to 180s to 200s and with the dawn phenoninem I would wake up with over 200.. And I stayed that way for a couple of years taking metformin 500 mg twice aday, just recently I have found I can no longer eat any type of bread, and believe me I have tried all the high fiber and whole grain I can find. I don't eat empty food, I cook all my own food and try to eat all whole foods, I am pretty inventive when it comes to adjusting recipes and spicing up conventional dishes. As of a couple of months ago I gave up all grain products, my readings have dropped into the 105 to 178 range, so I am reinventing the way I eat with lettuce sandwiches and smaller portions, so far it is working and I feel less frustrated, I take metformin now with each meal which is 1500 mg per day. If I snack it's a handful of nuts or 1/2 cup of tapioca pudding or raw veggies or 1/2 cup no sugar added ice cream…blue bunny freedom is great. I am 71 yrs old, and I never eat anything after 6 pm and I only drink water, two 32 ounce bottles every day, it's a routine that keeps me less frustrated, I treadmill 15 min am and 15 min pm walking. I hope my experience helps someone, remember …your body changes and you have to change with it…good luck

If you like bread, try Fiber One Multi Grain Bread. It taste great and also comes in white, wheat and a raisin-cinnamon. One slice has 110 cal., 6 gm fiber, 4 gm sugar and 5 gm protein ; the fat is only 1.5 gm no saturated or Trans fats.
I also like wraps and the one with the best flavor is made by Olé Mexican Foods, called Extreme Wellness, they come in Tomato Basil, Spinach & Herb, high Fiber, Whole Wheat and more. Most have the same info: 90 calories, 9 gm fiber, 0 sugar, 5 gm protein and NO FAT. Unlike regular tortilla wraps that use lard, these use just a small amount of olive oil. Best of all that taste great no matter what you put on them. I have even put a teaspoon of cinnamon butter and 2 teaspoons of peanut butter and felt like I was cheating! It was so good.
These are hard to find. Olé are at most Walmart Superstores. But the Fiber One Bread I am having shipped in from Madison, WI because I can not get it in the Tucson area of AZ YET!!! I am working on that now. I will get it in a store or on base or I will have it shipped directly from the bakery.

I will say this: You CAN eat bread, however the question then is "should you?"

I will tell you an account of what happened to me and what I eventually learned about bread and other grain products.

I had been Dx'd in 1995 and was put on Metformin ("Met") immediately by my Dr. No discussion, and I was so new to it (prolly like you are now) that I just accepted it and went on with my life. Then I got Chronic Kidney disease (CKD) and was taken off met because it is contraindicated for folks with kidney problems. I was but on a low dose of NPH (intermediate acting) insulin. I went on dialysis and continued my life My A1c had never been below 6.1 (to my knowledge) even after the NPH. I learned a lot about diabetes when I married another Person with diabetes. Her mom had diabetes also and we lived with her mom for a while.
I had never asked, but I believe my "Jem" had type 1. During that time Jem was living, I also found Diabetic Connect, and learned a lot there as well.

After Jem passed, I needed to move from where we were living and I moved back to Las Vegas again. Just after the move I dropped my vial of NPH and it shattered. I now had no Dr locally and no way to get my NPH quickly. I emailed my former GP and she sent a Rx for my NPH to my local pharmacy. Turn around about 3 days. I got to thinking, that I was still on low doses of NPH, and there were others who like Jem and her mama who needed a LOT more insulin. So I tried an experiment. If I cut out all breads of any kind and all starchy veggies and all fruits which spike the Blood Glucose (BG), If I ate VERY carefully did my pancreas produce enough natural insulin of its own I could forgo the NPH injections?

As it turned out I could. When I avoided grain products, and I ate very carefully, my A1c eventually became 5.5, my BG readings became normaized and I lost about 65 lbs (over about 5 mos). I continue on my meal plan (modified for dialysis) even today. I rarely, eat bread of any kind. I find I really do not miss it those things at all.

To me it has been important to manage my diabetes by my meal plan. I have written up the meal plan here on DC and will share it with you should you wish.

Also, you might want to consider that the gluten in bread has been implicated in causing inflammation in our guts. The imflammation has been suggested as a source of all types of other problems from Diabetes (both types) to Arthritis to IBS and others.

So I leave you with the question: Yes you can eat bread, but do you wish to suffer the potential consequenses. I now do suffer many of the consequences and DMT2 (Diabetes Mellitus Type 2) and it is a progressive disease. Many of my complicatons, like the burning neuropathy in my feet, and my Kidney disease are not able to be reversed.

So listen to James who has made and regretted many mistakes since being first Dx'd. As long as can manage your DMT2 via your meal plan, do so. You will find little use for bread or other foods contraindicated by the best diabetes practices.

I have type2 and this is what the doctor told me. Bread is fine as long as it is whole wheat or whole grain in limited amounts. If you can make your own bread even better. That way you can control what goes in it. If you have not made bread before, the easiest way to get started is a bread machine. Just keep the yeast in the refrigerator to keep it fresh. And cut those slice of bread thin about 1/4 inch.
If I have toast in the morning it's one slice, if I have a sandwich it's opened face or just a half sandwich. Keep dinner rolls small, if you make stuffing use whole wheat beard, replace the butter which broth and load it up with veg. But no more then 1/3 cup.
I also eat brown and wild rice, whole wheat pasta and sweet potatoes, but it's all about portion control. For me it's all about portion control, balanced meals and moving a lot. But before you take anyone's advice talk to your doctor. For me this all may be easier because I grow up with a diabetic mother.

Hello James! Good to see you here, and kicken up the dust no less! I'll add something else about bread. Dr. Pearlmutter, a well known neurologist claims that bread is a major cause of Alzheimers. He wrote the book Grain Brain. I will continue to eat bread, but with absolute restraint, and in very small quantities once in a while, as I have been doing for years.

I am new, but I have been experimenting since I am monitor mode for mine right now and trying to manage with diet only. Just to give you a little history, I went from exercising, eating heart healthy, trying to lose weight to prevent all of this to having a heart attack, stent put in, massive heart attack, open heart surgery of triple bypass and nearly dying on the operating table thanks to a mistake, to developing congestive heart failure two types both stage 3, regurgitating valves, and now being diagnosed with diabetes type 2. I am lucky so far with the fact that I can still see with my eyes, however, that has been declining. I have been within perimeters given to me, but not consistently enough for me. I was told that I could have bread, limited, and well I CAN'T. It spikes my sugar. I can't eat rice, pasta, potatoes, bread. I can on rare occasion have small amount of really good seed bread, like Dave's Killer Bread, Spelt, Sprouted Bread, but again, you are talking maybe once or twice a month. It has been a battle for me because I also have an extremely rare genetic disease which is basically a Chem imbalance. It caused me instant weight gain which is killing me. Doctors are talking about actually now doing gastric bypass on me, but again, there are some extremely risky side affects and biggest being that my heart may not be strong enough to sustain the surgery. I recommend, that if you are like me in loving bread, but you find it spikes your sugars, then try a sprouted bread, or good seed bread and do rarely…be sure to check your sugar levels after eating.

i'm a type2, am also on Metformin 850mg,co twice a day…i eat Brown bread…i eat almost the same things i ate before but smaller quantities… also have cut out things full of sugar ( ex: popsicles, ice cream,cookies).. but eat frozen yogurt now and then…but am craving my Lays chips,lol…

I eat bread and take Metformin. I stick to 100% WW bread though. I love PBandJ sandwiches and when I have them, I don't go crazy with the PB and I have never liked a lot of jam on them so that was good. I was always told to eat whatever I wanted BUT with quantity in mind. If you have a cookie now and then …Have ONE. Try and follow Canada's food guide about portion size for meals.

I also learned today from another friend, who has a brain disorder that has the potential to kill her…that processed sugar is like tiny shards of glass going into your body. I dropped all salt and sugar 7 months ago…First three week…I was a bit frantic…sucking on LOTS of honey sticks…not it has eased considerably…kinda funny now…Never missed the salt…but boy oh boy I learned three days ago..that my heart DOESN'T like even a tiny amount. I was making a dish for a funeral…and it called for tomato juice. the can I had there was two ounces left so I drank it. BIG mistake…later that afternoon as I was climbing my stairs to my bedroom…my heart was racing. Took my blood pressure. NO more Tom juice for me.

You can eat bread..just choose wisely. Learn which bread spike your sugars. Keep coming to this has helped a ton of people…myself included. Many people CANNOT eat bread in any way shape or form. You will find out though a big secret is protein. No one told me when I was first diagnosed several years ago. i am also a Type 2. When on the recently frequent occasions when my blood sugars drop…I eat a combo pack of Almond butter with Maple flavoring…I keep them in my purse. I am on a life journey to regain control of my body…and I am walking more each day. Got sandbagged with severe asthma..and significant spine disease…for two years. Now it's Watch Out… here she comes…lol. Seriously, learn to count your carbs..easier than you think. Take a diabetes course from a hospital..should be paid in full by your insurance company. Well I'm going to spoil this, sorry. We are all different as has been posted. FOR ME - I love bread. . . but it hates me! Even 100% whole grain or wheat. Yes this slows down the digestion but not my BG. Same goes for wheat pasta and brown rice. Once in a while I eat it, but usually skip it. Quinoa is great, but when I grind into flour it spikes my BG. Weird. After some five years using metformin it began to destroy my kidneys and doc didn't notice it. I changed docs. So be careful. I wish I was still on diet control! But I cheated to much, okay to cheat once in a great while, but going on insulin saved my kidneys, but I gained 50 lbs.

I respectfully disagree with Armourer, and kidney failure being casused by Metformin! There is absolutely no history of Metformin causing kidney failure in the medical books! High blood glucose is the culprit, and can be confused with other causes.

This is not true about Metformin it does not cause Kidney damage but to the opposite it is a cornerstone treatment for Type 2 Diabetes and in some cases Type 1 and has several benefits beyond blood sugar lowering. Thanks George! I have been on Met for a few years. I manage my bg tightly and have for about 18 years. My kidneys are doing fine as confirmed by numerous tests over the years by numerous doctors. I suppose that it could be confusing for some to realize that high bg, and high bp are more commonly the culprit of kidney failure as opposed to Metformin. I have discussed the use of Met with 3 endocrinologists, and two primary care physicians as well as my pharmacist. They all are of the same opinion that you have. I feel it is of utmost importance for those that need to be on medications to know with reasonable accuracy and info , what their choices are. I have yet to hear of any blind studies that have shown Met to cause kidney damage. I mention this for those considering the use of Met.

I was raised on bread. My father use to say don't call me to the table if there is no bread on it. So you see it was really hard for me to get use to not eating white bread but I found whole grain wheat just as good and to cut down on carbs I eat Pepperidge Farm Low Carb bread. I stay away from white bread and if I want a Hoagie (sub) sandwich I go to Subway for their wheat rolls. Taking metformin only helps with the insulin not in eating foods YOU are the one who will have to control your food intake. Keep reading other articles on this site and you should be ok. I'm a newbie in this too but According to carb counts you can have all sorts of meat, veggies…even try spaghetti squash to have with sauce. It's the pasta that's high in carbs as well as rice. I bought my carb book used from Better World Books and just got several diabetic cook books that way. You can have around 45 carbs per meal I've read. I check the carbs on bread and found a brand where I live that's 22 grams for 2 slices but I usually have toast in the AM. The really good bread is higher. I like to wrap good lunch meat, like sliced beef, turkey and ham with cheese in a lettuce leaf. Even mayo has no carbs as well as butter. pNut butter is low as is cr.cheese, or any cheeses. Low fat things are sometimes higher in carbs. Margarine is no good. I use coconut milk instead of's low carb and doesn't upset my tummy. I'm going to try making a lasagne using strips of zucchini as the pasta. I'm not able to get a lot of testing strips so I can only test twice a day. I'm on Medicare. I go through recipe books to see how I can alter them with Splenda. Don't panic…just try to eat well. I've heard that sweet potatoes are good…not yams. I love grapes but they are too high so I've switched to a pear for now when I really want fruit. My big downfall is popcorn with butter, some salt and will sprinkle some sweetener on it too. Learn about this as much as you can.

I take metformin and do eat bread (whole grain), but I eat very little carbs in the rest of my diet. The only other carbs I eat is maybe a small potato a couple times a month. I do eat slot of veggies and proteins. My blood sugar has stayed between 80 - 95. I'm a new type 2 diabetic too (about 4months now), and give myself 4 shots of insulin a day. You do get use to reading ingredients on everything though. Talk to your nutritionist they usually have a lot of booklets that help. Hope this helped.

When I was 1st diagnosed I was hospitalized for a week due to my BG not getting below 370. And that was with lantis once a day and novolog 3 times a day. Then I was given metformin 2 twice a day bringing my level down . That was 4.5 months ago, now my numbers stay between 80 to 95. I don't eat very many carbs and hardly any sugars. But according to my Dr I'm doing pretty good. He's lowered both lantus and novolog. My goal is to get off both of the insulin. But for now I feel really good.

Yes but working hard to get off it. And my A1c is now 5.4 , Dow from 14. but back to the "bread issue" we're each different. I was told about the four carb choices I could have each meal, but I try to keep it to four carb choices per day. But that's just what works for me. Between working and really watching my diet I've lost about 25 pounds. So all I can say do what is right for you.

I eat whole wheat bread but not a lot. Avoid white bread, a lot of red meat , and sugars. any food that's white, potatoes,cornstarch, corn syrup.

Ditto what everyone else says – let your meter tell you what you can and can’t handle, and use that to educate yourself about your body.
As for the question about Metformin – I’ll say no, you can’t use that as an excuse to eat more (like a crutch). You still have to find a diet that will give you control and hopefully get off the meds. If something is medically wrong that you won’t be able to do that, you’ll still have to find a diet plan that will prevent you from increasing the dosages.

Sugar it seems you are afraid to eat food. Only you can answer your question. Each of us are at different levels with diabetes. This is because many of us have eaten and tested to determine how the food effects our blood sugar.

If I want a sandwhich, I will eat it. I also learned that whole wheat, whole grain and multi grain breads will spike me and white bread doesn't. Don't ask me why because I don't know and even I think that is strange.

Only your doctor can tell you if you need medication. No one can answer that question for you. Diabetes does not mean you starve yourself. I eat anything I want to eat because I know what it is going to do to me.

Like Graylin said I have also found that some food combinations will metablize slower than other foods. The way we both found this out is by testing before you eat and right after at 30 minute intervals for a two hour period. Until you start doing this you will never know what you can or cannot eat.

Diabetes requires you to self educate. This way you learn what you can or cannot eat, how exercise effects you, and how well you can control your own diabetes. Until you do these things, you are going to stay in the same situation you are in. Test, Eat and then test again as Graylin and I have stated.

I really don't understand about the checking sugar after meals. I was told to wait 2 hrs. after meals before checking, but this wouldn't work with what you are saying. I would like to check like you do, but also those test strips cost a fortune. Out health plan covers them but if I were reordering them every few weeks…

I agree. It can be difficult but is worth it in the end. I remind people that I can eat anything I want ( in moderation) I try to use the whole plate method and eat more veggies. I also have started checking at markets and bakeries for more lower carb fresh breads ( with some very good finds). Best wishes to all of us in this incredible journey

:( I really am afraid to eat anything, because I don't want to feel the same way I did when I was having high blood sugar, I am on no meds but I feel all I can eat is salads and I don't get full, I don't have any insurance so I don't really have the finances to buy strips:( I already used my last pack of strips a month ago, I'm so confused and sad, this is so overwhelming I feel terribly sad bc I don't want to go in grocery stores…I just feel like salad is all I can eat because meat will probably higher my heart disease risk now that I'm diabetic :( I am such a mess!

Eating salads on a regular basis isn’t really the worst thing. They’re pretty much my evening meal Monday-Friday and if you can get some meat protein in them or as a side, you can have a similar but different meal each night. I chop up different veggies on the weekend to use as a “salad bar” during the week. Lots of options.

I certainly understand your fears, but you can’t go to the other end of the extreme and not eat. That will make you sick just as fast. In fact, your body will go into starvation mode and force your numbers up. It’s all about balance, and you still need to find that point.

I’ll say it again – just because you’re diabetic doesn’t necessarily mean you have any increased risk for heart disease. I’d be dead by now if that were the case.

Try testing your BG just before you eat. Then test your BG right after and every 30 minutes for about 2 ours. That will show you if the bread is ok for you to eat. You might need to check for another hour. I have done this and found that some foods/food combinations can metabolize a tad slower than within the 2 hours.
By testing I figured out a slice of most grain based bread will give me a BG spike. So, I really limit them. Instead of grain based bread, I make almond flour/meal bread.
As others have posted, they have different results.
When I was taking metformin, my Dr. explained I could take an extra one if I ate extra carbs. But I found for me, as I modified what I ate and eliminated the carbs that seemed to be causing the biggest spikes I was having too many sudden low BG episodes. For now, I am doing good with no meds, and do eat an occasional few bites of pizza crust when the urge hits.

I'm type 1, so it may be a little different… But I don't eat bread anymore. I buy carb control tortillas at Walmart. They only have like 3 net carbs and don't raise my BG. I make sandwiches onto wraps. They're delicious and I feel like I can still eat.
Also, the 45 calorie bread only has about 6-10 carbs per slice, so toasted with peanut butter, it's great for a snack.

Like most things with diabetes it's individual. Can you eat a whole sub roll? Probalby not a good idea. Can you eat an open faced sandwich? As long as you are counting all of your carbs in the meal. Should you eat white bread? Most likely not the best choice. Maybe a whole grain (not whole wheat) But still check the number of carbs in each slice. For me, bread has been eliminated. I wrap my lunch meat around a celery stick with a little horsey sauce and bean sprouts. Works for me.

Actually, only you can determine the best answer to your question. Since many of us are at different stages, and on different meds, doing different amounts and types of exercise, our reactions to foods differ. I do eat a slice of low carb whole wheat bread (11 grams) every now and then. It does cause a bit of an increase in my blood glucose reading, but nothing substantial. Should my blood glucose increase more than I'm comfortable with, I simply take a 15 to 20 min walk minimum and that brings my bg back to normal. I have been eating limited quantities of bread for the entire 20 years that I've had diabetes. I maintain a good a1c level and currently have no complications from diabetes.
Be careful and consider finding out what your body can tolerate with bread or any carb intake for that matter. Trial and error is part of the equation in determining what you can eat and can't eat. Get as much education as you can, and see a registered dietician if possible. Once you learn how to eat a healthy balanced diet, you'll probably be amazed at all the foods that are considered acceptable for those with diabetes.
