I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic 2 weeks ago. Have been really busy doing research & trying to change my diet and eating habits. My main 2 questions for all of you are in regard to fruits/ the difference in the sugar in them. ?? Which ones are good to eat & which should I stay away from ? Also what about salt and diabetes?? These are things I haven't asked my doctor about yet, and I'm still trying to find a local dietician to consult with.

Sometimes with fruit, it's not so much the type, but how much. Often a small whole piece of fruit or a 1/2 cup serving is considered a serving. However the exceptions can be things like berries that you can have 3/4 of a cup or even watermelon which is 1 1/2 cups. BUT, the glycemic index of the fruit is what makes it friendly or not. And if you are eating fruit, try to pair it with a protein like peanut butter to help prevent the spike. My go to fruits are strawberries, apples and pears (all a little on the green side) The ones I need to eat with caution are bananas, mangoes and peaches.

Salt is something your body needs. However, we get a lot of it in everything we eat, so finding a nutritionist to give you a goal for daily intake will be of the most help in that regard.

Where a food is on the glycemic index is a good way of determining how it will effect your blood glucose, and this includes fruits. Most berries are low on the glycemic index, which means that their carbs are converted by your bodies digestion, into blood glucose, more slowly. Strawberries, blueberries, rasberries, and blackberries are good examples of low glycemic fruits. Of course trial and error is part of the eguation in determining the effects of any fruit or food that you try. Quantity is another major factor that effects blood glucose. Here is one of the best glycemic index charts that I've come across.

Diabetes is different for everyone. Some can eat certain fruits while others cannot. Look up the fruits with their sugar content. I have a chart that I found online that I used. I will look for it and send you the website.
