So, my boyfriend and I have been together for a while, but he really doesn't pay much attention to my diabetes… He has very little understanding of anything about my diabetes. How can I explain it and have him actually understand it??

Maybe try showing him some of the kids material on diabetes. They break it down so its easy to understand. In my opinion I he really cares about you he'll take the time to learn a little about something that effects you entire life

Having the pump is so diffrent but I hope he won't feel weird with the cord. My diabetic nurse does a class that taught my ex a lot about it. Most hospitals should have it.

Hey Starrry_D,

Nice to hear from you. Sounds like your boyfriend needs some education. You might search online at reputable Websites, like the American Diabetes Association, for basic information about what diabetes is. That could be a starting place. Or see if your doctor has any basic pamphlets about diabetes.

Also, here is a link to an article I wrote awhile back.

Great to be in touch with you!

That's an awesome idea!!! He's seen me give a shot once, but I try and hide it at school… They all stare… They don't understand… I just don't like that he just looks over it, as though if he ignores it, it will cease to be. But thank you for that idea!! He will have to come to terms with it when I get my pump! Can't overlook that tube! Haha

Hey chicky. I would have him look the next time you check your blood sugar, count carbs and take your insulin. Also you could get a book that you both could read. You could make it fun too. You could make fun analogies about diabetes. My step mom made one about balloons. She said when everyone eats, we have all these balloons that float around in our bodies. People without diabetes have a pin that pokes and pops all their balloons. (Pancreas + insulin). People with diabetes have to pop those balloons themselves manually. If we don't, more and more balloons will will accumulate and pretty soon there won't be room for more balloons and space to move around and we could get sick and end up in the hospital. The less balloons we have, the better we are. (: so then once he understands, he an then take care of you in times of need (:
