1.You are eating the wrong foods. 2.You are getting the wrong types of calories per meal.3.You are eating meals in the wrong patterns each day. If possible, eat your meals at the same time each day.For Example:Breakfast 8:00 a.m. Lunch 1:00 p.m. Dinner 6:00 p.m.

Here is 2 for you, I'm overweight, have been all my life, was always the chubby kid, mine is genetically linked, I can starve myself and it wouldn't make me a skinny person EVER.

Our daughter is overweight, she was NEVER chubby except at birth and lost most of that birth weight in the first couple weeks of life. She was a skinny child until her Thyroid stopped working and she gained over 50 lbs in 4 months before they found the reason. This too had NOTHING to do with what she was eating.

Diabetes is NOT a fat person's disease and that misconception burns my butt. Eating healthy helps in many ways, not just with weight, but, I'm on the same diet now that our daughter is, she's lost nearly 7 lbs and I gained 4…same food, same carbs, same everything, she loses it and I find it, diet is not always the answer for being overweight.

Robin, how have they reduced your daughter's weight? It seems she is on the right track now and I feel she will do very well under your excellent care. Be sure to take care of your own diabetes though, for both your and her sakes! Best wishes to both of you!

Hi Richard,
They put her on a low carb diet, 125-150g per day total, averages out between 8-15 carbs. I thought it would be difficult and she would starve but they taught us to add fiber to give her that full feeling longer so she wasn't hungry all the time. We still have some issues, she's a kid and kids love candy and junk food, she also still eats meals at school but we work closely with the school nurse and the kitchen staff and decide what foods that are served she can't have or that have to be cut, or if it is all just too much we make a lunch (and/or breakfast) at home and send it with her.
Her Ped Endo told us on the 6th she at least wanted Laura to maintain or not gain any more weight, but it's working well enough that she is actually losing. When Laura was just in the hospital we discussed her weight some, and the Endo said don't be surprised if she stops losing suddenly and just starts maintaining.
She is also on Metformin, I don't know if that is aiding in her weight loss, from what I've read here it seems some diabetics actually gained while on it, so who knows, but as long as the diet she is on now works we'll stick with it.

My meds and depression has made me gain weight. I am not use to gaining much weight so it is a little sensitive to me still. But not to much. Cause I know I am doing everything possible to control my b/g and weight.

Everything is not always so black and white by the way. I don't eat much at all and excercise everyday and I am still gaining. My Dr. said when my blood sugar starts normalizing that I could expect some weight gain. And for me to just keep doing what I am doing.

Cynthia, thank you for coming back and clarifying your point. It seems clear that you were not meaning to offend. Sometimes it's hard to understand the tone of what was said when it is only in print.

I'm sorry that some have responded so strongly to your original post. We do all need to be careful of making broad generalizations. The reasons one person might gain weight or have a high blood sugar can be very different from the next person. It will serve us all well to remember that.

But again, thank you for coming back and trying to be sensitive to the feelings of others on the site.

Thanks John! I see strong opinions stated in the wrong manner when objecting to a post. I was a moderator for a few months last year on my home site. We gave so many warnings to people who were out of line in their responses. Some were banned when they did not stop. I don't think it has reached that point here and I hope it won't. I don't want members here to be afraid to come forth and air their problems and ask their questions but that could happen if their are too many replies like some given here. My philosophy is always "If you can't say something nice or in an appropriate manner then say nothing at all".

Just a little update, the other day when Cara wrote about her life history she was not using anything as an excuse for her current condition, she was just venting sometimes we all need too, be it here where others can understand, But please she never intended to attack any other member she was just upset, the last thing she would do would hurt anyones feeling. Cara is a survivor like the rest of us and anytime any of us feels like just typing to get stuff out then hey lets go for it. No one should ever be repremanded by another for what they say here. Tolerance my friends, tolerance. hugs to all. jackie

I know we all need to vent sometime and we need to be tolerant of each other, but we also on a public forum, with all kinds of people we need to NOT make general statements that lump us all in one category. We each are dealing with this disease in all kinds of ways and some of us are overweight for many different reasons and weight is a very touchy subject. Gabby said a few weeks ago that when we post or start a discussion we need to write it, then read it and think to ourselves, would we want to read this about ourselves. I have started doing this. I write, then read and wait a moment, then read again and make changes If I need too, then hit add your reply. And if I feel that it may offend someone I will put that in the post that I was sorry if offended anyone. Just like now If cynthia feels like I offended her I am sorry.

Gabby
GabbyPA 2008-12-18 21:20:41 -0600 Report

Well, I have to say that there are many reasons...but perhaps Cynthia was just trying to get us to identify what it is that contributes to our weight issues. I know defensiveness is a first response when someone challenges my weight. I used to always get that way when my husband used to try to help me. It is a natural response. That is more of an esteem thing. Now that I know and TRUST that he is wanting to genuinely help, it is easier to accept.

Yes, there are many other reasons. But I have to say that what she is offering are some things that maybe we could work with to make things better. I know now that I have reduced my caloric intake, I have lost weight. Now that I eat on a more defined schedule, I have lost weight. Now that I am eating healthier foods, I have lost weight.

So, no. These are not the ONLY reasons for weight gain, but they are not wrong ones either.

You are right Gabby. But we can not all be lumped into a category that it is what we eat. I have also lost weight recently and tried to eat on a regular schedule because of my meds to take. I also this week have cut out bread and potatoes and have lost more weight. But I am still southern and love the food. LOL

maybe she should have explained her self better as well. That might have helped. To be told you are fat for this reason or that reason will get the reponse you are not looking for. I understand why I am overweight, but have a hard time getting on track and losing it. I think insulin makes it harder as well. I have cut out all pasta, most breads…etc. and still have not lost much weight. Though i keep try. Lanore ;-)

I thought I would chime in on this one although I am new here. My weight issues come from most of the ones mentioned here and I would be lieing if choices were not a big part of that. Heredity can get us in two ways. First is we are born with the number of fat cells we will have in our lifetime but our lifestyle will determine our body shape. If we remain active we will be less likely to be obese. The second way heredity gets us is we learn our eating habits from our families. I was raised in Southern Ca around the beaches but my parents were from the midwest "red meat and patatoes" land! Just some sensible words and my two cents. We all get a bit upset about weight especially for those of us who struggle with it.

There are too many reasons other than listed. I dont have a weight problem, and I eat meals at all different times , My work schedule and taxi driving (for my daughter) and taking care of hubby (disabled) I dont think I eat a single meal at the same time in a month! I work 3 different shifts a week, I still get my excersie in and eating? well when I get to it I can…lol But eating at the same times everyday is not a factor in gaining weight . Most Diabetics I know eat 4-5 small meals a day not 3 set meals.

Not that I like being overweight mind you, but that is what happened and I have yet to get raid of it. But I do THANK YOU for pointing out the reasons why you think we are FAT. Have a great day. I consider myself plesently plump.. And feel I've done well on the weight issue. partly because of genetics.. My whole family is over weieght (but I'm the least compared to my Mom, brother, sister.. My depression med causes weight gain. I get little exercise in my wheelchair. I've lost over 50lbs since being diagnosed which I contribute to my diet change and only 50lbs more to go to considered to be normal for my height.

Slightly different angle I was overweight before I started eating healthy well balanced foods heart smart and started to exercise again. Lazyness on my daily regime was what did me in and led me needing meds to help me now. Stress is a killer and that is what is getting to me now, so I have to be very aware of what I eat, do and think. jackie

2008-12-17 14:32:29 -0600 Report

I agree that there are alot of different reasons for being overweight. Mine are genetic, underactive thyroid, and just plain overeating (especially the junk food).
