Hey Guys!
So I've decided to rejoin the gym after quite some time of not being really active. What do u guys recommend I should eat as a snack before I workout so that there is less of a chance that I drop too low. I am a type 1 diabetic.

I do most of what was suggested. I like a PB sandwich, or PB on something, sometimes a handful of nuts with some string cheese, low fat cheese of any kind, even a cereal that is healthy, a half a bowl of that with skim milk is good too. post workout, they say now, low fat chocolate milk is supposed to be great, but watch the amount.

I suggest putting fruit juice or Gatorade in your water. I find sipping at something with carbs throughout the whole workout keeps me more stable than just eating before

I think it all depends on the intensity of the workout. I usually have a kids box of raisins before doing some exercise.

Depends on the person and what type of exercise being done. I find a great way to not go low is cut back back on whatever insulin you have in the meal before exercising. If I lift weights my sugar doesn't really drop much, if anything can increase. Running and stuff usually lowers it if its longer than 15-20 minutes. I think 15-30 grams is a normal amount of carbs for 30 minutes to an hour of exercise. I think it really depends on the person. Just make sure you check your sugar before/during/after to see whats going on so you can learn from it.

I tend to go for protein – beef jerky, some chicken, almonds, peanut butter on celery, etc. It stays with me longer and doesn’t give me a spike during a workout like fruits or the carbs from granola do. If I’m low afterward, I’ll use fruit/carbs or such to get me back in range.

Just what works for me, but then, I’m at an age where carbs and sugars aren’t as helpful as someone say, in their 20’s. Welcome to the group!

I think it depends in ur BS level. If it's low so u should eat a fruit (apple, banana) and it also depends on your activity level .. If u exercise with high intensity so u deserve to eat something like a small sandwich . Anyway, u should measure your BS level before and after the workout. U may need to eat a fruit after workout . I hope that I helped u :)

Hey ali21 :)
I'm glad you're exercising! Usually what I do before I exercise is just eat something small. Sometimes I eat an apple/banana or a granola bar. Depending on how rigorous and crazy the exercise is you might have to adjust. Personally, I swim, which is pretty rigorous, but a granola bar or fruit usually works! I don't like eating something big before I swim, it just weighs me down. You just have to work with it and see what works best. Just make sure your BG is ok :). But I don't have to tell you that haha!
