I just sent a question to the Experts about this. I have been dxed with early onset dementia caused by my diabetes of 37yrs. My mom, step father and grandmother have all died from Alzheimer's and so I am scared of my diagnosis. Can a Type 1 who is on insulin (pump) take Metformin as well?

Thank you for posting this article. I just finished reading it, and found it to be encouraging. My dad has Alzheimers, and I have to wonder it he might not have it as badly as he does if he had been put on Metformin for his diabetes long ago. I have been taking it for years…hope it helps with some future memory loss as well as with my diabetes! :)

I'm sorry about your dad. I wish things could have been different for him and for you. Life can be funny that way.

Reminds me of my grandma. She was diabetic with her left leg cut off at the knee. She'd had a massive heart attack and she had gone blind — she was very sick and we would visit her daily, back then. Well, during this time all these wonderful supplements were coming to market and my mom found one for diabetics. She bought one for gran but gran was under doctor's care at the old folks home and mom needed the doctor's permission to give it to her. The doctor would not let mom give it to her. He said gran was "too far gone" and would not be able to digest it. Would cause more problems than benefits. My mom just cried and cried. It just broke my heart. Had it been another time and place…

It is just so good to see a good report about a medicine instead of a nasty side effect all the time!

Have a good day :) Denise
