I would like to know from all the friends here what they do to keep their weight under control? This is something everyone could use for a guideline for the starting of the New Year. No lets not call it dieting, Let call it a new life change…

My big change this year so far, the last 3 days at least(LOL) was portion control. I am going and try to use the smaller plate for now on. It does make you think you are eating alot and I am actually full when done. If I was using my regular dinner plate, there would be more food on it , and of course I would probably clean my plabe and have ate 30% more food…Debe

I also have been using the small plate for portion control,so far it's been working.I have lost a few pounds,and my BS has been in the normal range. I'm hoping when I see the doc in March that my ac1 test is down. This 2009 year is going to be awesome!!! I wish everyone a very good year we need to just take it one day at a time,it really works.

I cook all of my meals at home now. Can't even stand the taste of fast food anymore. Besides the health benefits it helps in the wallet too. I usually use Sunday to do my cooking for the week. I plan out the meals based on what is on sale at the grocery store.

I do not eat fast food at all. I used to only get an Arbys roast beef sandwich maybe once a month. But when I seen the sodium count , I said good-bye to Arbys. I too do all my cooking at home…Debe

We do eat out alot but not fast food and what I do is when they bring me my food I ask for a to go box and put half in the box before I start eating. that is my portion control and then I have lunch the next day.

The danger of eating out is that you don't know what they are adding to the food. Did you know that Denny's adds pancake batter to their omelets?

OMG...you are joking! that can mess up an insulin dose real fast. How can they do that? How did you find out?

Read it in a low carb website. The person said that they could not figure out unexplained weight gain. They said they asked if anything but eggs was used in the omelet and the manager told them that they added pancake batter to make the omelets fluffier.

I have seen everything that I try to do to lose and manage my weight. Some days are harder to deal with than others because of my other health problems.

I love water with limes and if I want to cheat I get a Cherry Limeade when we go to TGIFridays and ask for extra limes and crush them up in it. I am originally from South Texas and real mexican food using alot of limes. And Jared I so love Subway too. I love there new flatbread ones. the chicken florentine is so yummy.

I have exercised a lot. I have lost over 50 pounds since July. I run three to four days a week and try to get a swim in two other days. I also have noticed that I am just more active overall which I am sure helps my metabolism. I want to get my son an air hockey table so we can play games whenever I am not working. As for eating I am just eating smaller portions and less processed foods. I have given up eating whole bags of flaming hot cheetos and I avoid most fried foods. I also cook a lot more at home and if I do need to eat out I try to go to Subway for the most part. I should become the new Subway spokesperson that way they can have a cool Jared. Just kidding. That is the secret to my succcess is a lot of hard work. Remember the last few pounds are the hardest to lose. I have about 10 to go and am having trouble losing those, however I am also dealing with some annoying running injuries. Good luck to everybody.

Here are mine:
I shop the perimeter of the store. The dairy, produce meat and frozen. If you notice the carb laden stuff is in the middle of the store.
I eat on a salad plate. 1/2 salad or veggies. 1/4 meat and 1/4 carbs like pasta, rice or potato.
I exercise more and more everyday.
I like finding new recipes to try and am always looking on here and other websites for new ones.
And starting this new year as a family we are going to start eating at home more and everyone on the weekends will have their own night to plan a menu and cook it. I am looking for recipes now for my first night.
So everyone here have a Merry christmas and a very Happy New Year.

We have been doing the menu planning thing for several months now. At first is was kind of bumpy. Getting used to more balanced planning, but it is paying off.
I post on the firge a sheet with the days of the week. There are 4 of us who cook and we have assigned days. Each of us chooses from our large selection of books or online and put what we are cooking and the rounded out meal.

Then to the side of that I have a column that has "grocery list" on it. There they list the ingredients they need so I can make sure to have them on hand or to make some substitutions.
My husband cooks too, and getting him to plan the whole meal is a challenge, but he really does try to choose things that my mom and I can eat.

If any of you want a copy, I can put it in a PDF format and send it to your email. Just drop me a private note to let me know.

Weight management tips.
So far I've seen everything I do already here.

-Find an exercise you love so you want to do it. Mine is swimming.
-Portion control - my eyes can adjust so well to justify taking more than I should.. lol
-Eat whole foods, natural foods, and stay away from prepackaged chemical laden foods. Easy one now after a year or more of doing it.
-Laugh - every day, for whatever reason so that this is a life not a prison sentence as some people see it.
-Meet new people as often as possible with or without diabetes to keep my life interesting.

I've lost 55 lbs since February 2007 without much effort on my part so I'm hoping for the last 40 lbs to go that way too :)

Be HONEST! Yep, that is the trick for me. Some things I do when I get lazy is guestimate my protions, stretch my exercise, or rationalize with stupid excuses. My numbers don't lie, so neither should I. LOL

When I focus on my BG levels, I find that I make adjustments in my lifestyle that will cause weight to come off. I LOVE that side effect! When I get distracted by the scale, I get stupid. Like Debe says, it is a life change.

Specific things that help me:
Exercise everyday: I make sure I do something, anything!
Watch my Carbs: Those not only spike my levels, but they trigger cravings.
Eat close to nature: I include most of my food that is in it's natural form.
Portions: This is where I fall down. I have to measure every time. My eyes decieve me too often. LOL
Have fun: I make it an adventure, not a chore. It is easier to make it stick that way.
Reality checks: I am never going to be super model thin. BUT I can be healthy and whatever wieght I am at, and that is my ultimate goal.

Some things I will do this coming year is:
* Get creative about how I cook.
* Try and shop smart at the grocery stores
* Exercise- Find the exercise that suits me and try to stick to it.
* Watch what I eat
* Log everything I eat
* Educate myself
* Get support- Thanks to my friends here, I know I'll have all kinds of support.
I know as I keep on pondering about this I probably will be adding more. Would love to see others suggestions?…Debe

My best suggestion in losing weight is portions. By that I mean take a quick check of what you have on your plate. Remember, a full display of colors is appropiate, such as orange (carrots) red (tomatoes) green (celery)blue(blueberries)and any other color you can think of in the form of a fruit or vegetable. Add colors on your plate for any meal, including breakfast.R.C. Goad

Thank you so much. That was one of the big changes I made 3 days ago. I now eat out of a salad plate and it does improve the portion control…Debe
