Hi everyone I am Type 2 diabetic, just found out that I am diabetic and I have been trying to get as much info as I can, I started feeling overwhelmed and decided to look for a support group where I can go in and talk to others like myself. Imagine my surprise when I found NONE. Does anyone know of a support group in the New York City area, or if there is anyone here who would like to vent with and to let me know.

If you can't find a group, why not start a support group? Find out who among your friends and family members who are diabetic. Sometimes they can be a good source of support. I am not good with support groups. We have several here in Maryland but I have never joined one. I can't stand listening to people whine and complain instead of taking action.

What you can do is write down all the questions you have and take them with you to your doctor. He or she can be a good source of information. Find a diabetic education class. You can meet other diabetics there and you can network there.

When you are first diagnosed, it can be overwhelming. Take a break from information gathering and find something else to do. I bought all kinds of diabetic books and now use them for references when I need information. I focused on counting carbs and when I got comfortable with that, I moved on to weight loss. I also made a food journal which helped until I got a meal plan.

Today I do not want or need a support system. I am self supporting and self motivating and diabetes is not my main focus. I have diabetes, it does not have me and I control my diabetes, it does not control me.

Once you become comfortable with it, life will be so much easier and you will be able to focus on other things you want to do in life. I am now having a blast. Good luck.
