Good Morning, I am new here and to Diabetes 2. I was on metformin but to many complications with use as it was killing my stomach and bladder. I was prescribed a new Insulin Pen at which cost is at 300.00 a month, and there is no way to pay for it even being on State insurance which does not pay for the prescription. My reading blood sugar for the last 8 months has been between 300 to 450 with best diet and simple exercise and I also have CHF at an EF rate 28 percent in which I have an ICD and on Warifin 8.5 mg daily! My question is how to pay 300.00 for pen and another 150.00 for the other meds monthly ? is there a trick.. lol

I am a type 1 diabetic of 17 years and my insulin would cost me $600.00 per month, which I cannot afford. The best thing you can do is ask your primary care physician for samples of the insulin you use, or something comparable, and ask for the vials. A vial is cheaper at the pharmacy than the pens and holds 1,000 units as opposed to a pen, which holds 100. Syringes are really cheap, too. Also, you can check the internet for coupons for whatever you need. Either way, you need the insulin. You really don't want to go through all the complications I'm going through now. If your doctor won't give you samples, ask for an rx for syringes and vials of insulin. It'll last you 10 times longer than the pens. Good luck!

That's great !!!! It will keep getting better. Stick with a low carb diet and exercise and your numbers will keep getting better. It might take a little while to hit your right dosage but it sounds like you are on your way. I have been a T2 for 12 years and started on insulin 18 months ago my numbers were the same as yours. Now my numbers stay below 130. Good luck on your journey through life

Yea, only been on about 8 months with pills, but could not get below 300, most of the time 400 range. Always ate right, cannot exercise much since heart is only 28 percent but I try to do more and more everyday.

I know the feeling, when I'm sick mine goes into the 600's and I feel like crap. When it finally comes back down, I feel like a brand new person! Congrats on getting it out of that danger zone and keep it up!

Unfortunately there is no simple trick when it comes to the cost of health care. I would talk to the doctor an explain your financial situation and ask is there another oral med other then metformin you can try, also inquire if you can buy the insulin by the vial and not use an insulin pen. Insulin pens are convenient but you pay for that convenience, In some cases depending on what kind of insulin you use it can be a whole lot cheaper buying by the vial and using a syringe 2013-06-30 17:38:58 -0500 Report

You need to check with the drug companies (like insulin, I get help with apidra). They may have some sort of program to help you.. I'm on 2 different insulin pens… I know what you mean about metformin, messed up my stomach while on it.
