I was reading my new diabetes packet today (rather out dated, unfortunately)
However, it had this note and it struck me as a new way of thinking I can use.
Consider your protein portion of your meal as your "side dish" instead of the main course. What a concept. I really think that will help me a LOT. I do love my meat.

I am shocked, yesterday while seeing my dietitian for carb counting for the pump, they said for me to eat 1800 calories. I am allowed 2 oz. breakfast, 3 oz, lunch, and 3 oz for dinner. Well believe it or not, she brought out her fake rubber food and I thought 4 oz was plenty. But when I saw the 3 oz chicken breast I must be eating like 6oz. I was using my eyes for measurements. No more I back to the scale and measuring cups and spoons. I was eating alot more protein than I should…Debe

Unfortunately the portion sizes add up to be the amount of a small t.v. dinner. Except hopefully better for you and better. Eww I hate T.V. dinners. I could so eat more than that.

My husband makes the best fresh salads for me every night, by the time I finish all that lettuce, 3 kinds of peppers, tomatoes, onions, avacado, seeds, I have very little room for the rest of my meal. So most nights I just eat more veggies and half of the chicken or fish that we have, best part of it is, I always have lunch made for the next day. Jackie

when I saw my dietitian she told me that they do not count calories any more and all i had to do was follow the food guild recommendations. When I pressed her further she finally got out her calculator punched in the numbers, said again they do not do that any more and told me if i had to know it was 1600 a day, even when on a previous eating plan it was almost impossible for me to eat more than a thousand. So I just decided to eat healthy. jackie

Me too. One of my favorite breakfasts is a salad with walnuts and a few crackers. It is a good balance for me and my levels like that meal.

Basically I guess that is what I have been doing lately. I take my plate and imagine 3 lines. I fill the biggest with veggies. I fill the second and smaller one with a starch. And the 3rd smaller one with a protein. Then I top it off with a small roll. Thinking of meat as a side dish does save some fat and calories.

Well I am doing almost the same thing. I eat on a salad plate and 1/2 is veggies or salad, 1/4 is protein and 1/4 is carbs like pasta, rice, potatoes. No bread. seems to be working. Numbers are great and i am loosing weight.
