Finally after 2 months of gradually increasing Metformin to the dose ordered by Endo. 1,000mg. ER
(had lots of stomach upsets..).
I am experencing EXTREME depression…One or 2 issues in life that are upsetting. Thought I was coping with these…I am 80 yrs. old, retired nurse, exercise everyday, Type 2 diabetes…Always able to deal with life ups and downs. Not now…My Endo. who would be expert in this area is on maternity leave -2 months.
Anyone had this reaction????

I have not read that metformin causes depression and like Jaybee said, chronic illness often brings on some form of depression. But there could be some kind of reaction with other meds or maybe the diagnosis just "clicked" in a way you didn't expect.

Getting support and talking to others about how you are feeling is a great place to start. If it persists, I would make sure your doctor is on top of it and working with you.

Gee and I thought it was PMS. Boy do I get out of sorts. I'm the type of person who always tries to see the bright side but after being diagnosed and also on metformin I do get down a lot. I've been on the metformin for about 3 years, no more stomach upsets as long as I take it with food, but it's rough dealing with the highs and lows. I just push through it and wait until the mood passes. It's good to know it's not just me.

Thanks for comments. I do have other issues, so maybe the metformin was only a side issue…Lost one daughter due to alcoholism a year ago…Now, just found out my only other child (daughter) has liver damage and may only have 1-2 years…mainly because she has stated drinking again.

Loss of a child is a HUGE issue. My mom found depression crept in when she lost my dad, but just a few years later she lost my brother and that sent her over the edge. I think that is one of the hardest types of death to deal with.

ive found i seem to get depressed easier after being on metformin too. also get frustrated about the stupidist things. not sure if there is a correlation with mood and metformin, but it does make me wonder
