I have been enjoying diet soda for many years…and just recently found out that they are worse for you than regular soda!! I have tried several times in my lifetime to get off all caffeine…but end up with excruciating headaches!! I do love water with a lemon wedge, but sometimes want something with a little more zip!! Any suggestions on how to shake the diet soda monkey off my back…and any suggestions for invigorating (non-alcoholic) beverages…would be greatly appreciated!!!

I don't have a caffeine problem because it has no affect on me, and I don't drink coffee or tea either. I use to drink a half gallon of diet soda a day, sometimes more for over 20 years. A year ago last February I decided to end the habit and save some bucks. To date all I've drank is water, some times it is hard. But in the end my kidneys are hopefully going to appreciate it. Now I drink a half gallon of water a day. Carbonation is said to be bad for one's kidneys too.

I think out of all the sweeteners out there, Stevia is the better choice. I've also heard Monk Fruit is healthier as well, though I haven't really tried it yet. Both are obviously processed but neither contain aspartame or saccharin.

I have a SodaStream carbonator unit and love it. I carbonates tap water and you can add flavors to your taste…or drink it plain.
They make regular flavors or diet…some are really tasty! I love the fact that they do NOT have aspartame…they use Splenda. They just came out with Koo-Aide flavors…there are Crystal Light and Country Time choices, as well. I love the diet cream soda and ginger ale.
I hope you get a chance to try this, you can make whatever you want.

I just got a SodaStream for Christmas 2013. Since you have had yours for a while, do you have any suggestions/recipes to share?

LOL, not sure why anyone wants to get off caffine but to each their own! But about that soda. You really need to just look up and research the additives they put in diet soda. the studies say to stay away from them. I say stay away from anything fake. Our bodies are too important to gunk it up with crap. I had a friend ask my husband " why do americans drink chemicals?" Really makes you think. Have you tried Hansons diet soda? its made with stevia. I dont like it myself but its worth a try. Dont forget to go to your local health food store, they have lots of stuff to choose from. Try adding fresh juice to sparkling water, you dont need much. Over ice thats really good. gives you a change of flavors. But please stay away from the usual diet sodas. As for getting off caffine, if you really want to then you will just have to suck it up and live with the headaches for awhile. They will go away. Drink lots of water.

Thanks for the info…I really appreciate it!! I'm actually finding myself getting away from the soda habit…and it feels good!! I started drinking Gatorade when I had a recent stomach bug and got dehydrated. I didn't think I'd like it…but there are so many flavors to try. I DO love water…and drink plenty of it, especially on days I'm doing alot of yard work!! I like the idea of sparkling water with different flavors…thanks for the suggestions!!!

Look up the advantages of lemon water

Caroltoo 2013-05-12 19:42:32 -0500 Report

I'm with you on that! Tastes good and lemon is beneficial. Used to drink soda regularly, then thought I was doing myself a favor to use diet, then read about it and went back to regular. Now I haven't had a soda in over 5 years and I no longer miss them. Love lemon water and don't use a sweetener of any kind.

The reason why diet sodas are bad for you is the aspartame they contain, so I would suggest you try to ween off ANY drinks made with this deadly chemical. I haven't had any diet drink for over a year this month. Instead I always order or buy unsweetened teas and use stevia or monk fruit to sweeten them. Same thing with coffee.

Drinking caffeine shouldn't be that much of a problem with regards to being diabetic, although some people are ultra- sensitive to it. I don't believe caffeine is harmful in moderation, but I DO believe artificial sweeteners such as Splenda, Sweet n Low and Equal are VERY harmful… even in moderation over time…

Take care!!

I use drink diet sodas all the time. I slowly winged myself off of it, because of the caffeine. There's no sugar coating this one, your going to get the headaches. Work past it until you know longer have headaches, the outcome for me, I no longer drink diet sodas.

Caffeine is such an addiction for me, and after drinking diet soda for 30+ years…it's not easy to break the habit!! I am trying though because I know it's not good for me!! I truthfully never realized how bad the diet soda really is for a person till recently…and as I research it, I'm finding it scary that I drank it for so long!!

well have seen that also about diet sodas so I like sNerTs1 get my caffeine from coffee but I have cut back a lot on diet pop. I do drink iced tea I make with decaf tea bags and splenda or stevia, or some of the flavored waters that you can get about anywhere which come carbonated if you want a kick or non-carbonated if you don't. about only time I do diet pop anymore is once in awhile if out at restaurant or I might get a bottle at work once in awhile.

I guess there is bottled water available with caffeine in it.
Normal tea and iced tea may have the ceffeine you are looking for.

Hi DM! I don't get charged from caffeine but I know people do. I don't think its something that you can just one day "cut", you should really wean yourself off the caffeine so your body can adjust correctly and you have less withdrawal like effects.

I usually drink crystal light ice tea, decaffeinated. My caffeine for me comes in the form of coffee but Ive never gotten a headache for missing a day or anything so I cannot appreciate what you go through.

I think once you wean yourself off the caffeine, you will find that you get "zip" from feeling healthier. Its hard to wean but you can do it!!

I have been trying to wean myself off the diet soda…but it's really hard after drinking it for so many years!! I, too, like my coffee…but I usually only drink 2 cups in the morning. I do like Crystal Light…so I will try it more. Thanks for the encouragement…that means alot!!!
