I can't stand for someone to tell me about me. Me: Yes I have diabetes Person: You don't have diabetes because you're skinny or you're too young. Before you start to run off at the mouth, it doest hurt to pick up a book and educate yourself a little..lol.

Things my family has said to me over the years…maybe if you weren't so skinny, maybe you just need to eat more, but diabetes has never run in our family, why can't your doctor get better control of your blood sugar, you can't eat that ice cream - you might as well be comitting suicide! Why don't you just take better care of yourself. I could go on and on, but I have to remember that my family has never bothered to educate themselves about diabetes. Still annoying though!!

Over the years my youngest daughter would say things like…"One piece of cake won't hurt you!"…or "You can't quit eating everything that's 'bad' for you"!! It really used to get to me…but I've learned to deal with it. I've tried to educate her…but sometimes it's like talking to a brick wall!!!

The one time at a party I will admit I had a bit to drink. But stopped right as I felt weird. I decided I wanted to lay on the floor. Well people surrounded me pulled me onto the couch and kept telling me to take my blood sugar cause they thought I had passed out. Meanwhile I had just taken my blood sugar about 15 minutes before and I was fine. My sister and law had to tell everyone to leave me alone because I was started to get freaked out! I don't like it when people hover around me like that! :P

Most people who know me don't know I am diabetic. When they ask about the choice(s) in food they see me eat I just tell them 'some of us have to watch what they eat.' They have never asked again…

Ok, I will be honest. I had to stop in on this post because I just loved the title of it. LOL

One of my pet peeves is when they watchdog me for eating ice cream but don't say a thing about the plate of fries I just ate. LOL Really, people don't understand carbs at all. My husband even after 5 years of me being diabetic doesn't get the whole carb thing....he's stuck in "sugar" mode, like most people who don't know anything about diabetes.

not much, I usually don't let people get to me, no one has ever said anything about my diabetes that was rude or anything that bothered me. sorry for those that have heard nasty comments from others, and ridiculous comments are very common, from people who do not have diabetes, and think they know it all. It's funny really. people are shocked that I am type 2, I am at my ideal weight, I have to tell them I lost nearly 40 lbs. once I found out I wasn't at ideal weight in the beginning.

Same here tabby. I don't let people get to me either. It isn't worth it. People at times speak without thinking and to get your panties in a bunch over it says a lot about you as a person. I am stronger than words that spew from someones uninformed mouth.

I hear you on that one. I have lost nearly 80 pounds now. Kept it off for 5 years...and keeping if off for ever I hope! Yes, I have a lot to go, but it would be nice if people would understand that I am making progress.

Congrats on the loss!! And even more kudos for keeping it off. That's the hardest part.

Congrats Gabby I also lost about 55 lbs and most of that was in first year after I was diagnosed and still keeping it off now and then family and friends started asking how did you do it? Just told them the truth..I was diabetic and just cut out sugar and watched my carb intake and they were like "that's it?" and I said yea pretty much. I actually didn't exercise much cause job I had at the time was a physical job so I got my exercise doing my job. I cant believe how much better you feel after losing 55 lbs. its been amazing.

Age or weight has nothing to do with being a diabetic!

That is what I try to tell some people. They want to argue about it. So ,I just let them continue to believe..lol

Never argue with an unarmed person. It is fruitless. I am to the point I don't try to explain. People have the right to be uninformed. Many don't learn until it happens to them.

Educating oneself does not mean that people are going to be smarter. There are educated idiots everywhere. What I don't understand is why people get upset when someone says something about being diabetic. People have misconceptions about everything. Those who want to learn more about any topic will educate themselves.

People also associate High Blood Pressure with being overweight. This isn't true either. However, when it comes to medical conditions, there are people who won't learn the facts until it happens to them.

I am the kind of person who does not care what people say about me unless they are telling a lie about me. Then I will either confront them and ask for proof or tell them if they really knew what they were talking about I would no longer think they are a total idiot. They can say what they choose. I know who I am, what I am and I am aware of my faults. The wiser, stronger person keeps moving forward. Words can't hurt you unless you allow them. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, "No one can make your feel inferior without your permission". No one can say anything to make you mad, upset or miffed without your permission. Therefore, there is very little that will get my undies in a bunch because I have better things to do with my emotions and my time. I am too strong and wise for that.

I don't stress about it because I know who I am. Its people who are know it alls and diagnose you and don't no diddley and want to tell you what you are or what you are not. That's good that your strong and to wise. I am to.. What annoys the crap out of one person might not annoy you…

They aren't diagnosing you they are stating an uninformed opinion. When people give me their uninformed opinions I ask them if they are the genius in the family and walk away. I don't bother to wait for a response.

Haha! That's amusing! Some people really don't know that there are multiple kinds of diabetes. The one thing that always bugged me was taking my blood sugar around my friends the constant "WHAT IS IT?" or "Are you low? Do I need to find you food?" Would bug me soooo much. My family used to do it too then I told them that I was tired of it. Now my mom only asks me when I'm cranky! lol Also once I was diagnosed about 2 years ish ago my friends would always ask me to take their blood sugar to make sure they weren't diabetic too. I litteraly had to keep a separate glucometer in my locker for those days that they wanted to know.
